<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on One Ford: Way Forward Or Way Too Late?]]> I wonder if the current gas prices will once again mean that US car buyers will be able to choose between different engines? As gas mileage once again becomes important, it doesn't make any sense for manufacturers to fling the same large engine in all models of a car. See the BMW 1-series for example; only available as a 128i or a 135i in the US. In Europe one can choose between 116i, 118i, 120i, 128i, 130i, 135i, 118d, 120d, 123d. I would welcome such a development - actually being able to buy a car which suits me!

Best gin for the buck: Plymouth, or Boodles. Junípero if you want to buy 'murican (San Francisco, made by the good people who bring us Anchor Steam).

/bartender mode,

and back to the masked Honda: Clearly Honda's tape artists did everything in their power to make it look more like a Prius than it actually does. This is camouflage, remember? I'd imagine that they're looking for a shape which screams "hybrid" without looking quite so Priusesque.

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on 1960 Peugeot 403, With Bonus French Car Poll]]> My grandfather's first car was a Renault 4CV, followed by a '59 Peugeot 403. It memorably lit itself on fire while on a family car trip in England, and after that he only drove Volvos. He was a teacher, and instead of giving out detention he would make the misbehaving kids help him push start the 403 in the bitter Swedish winter.

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8, Part Three]]> Speaking as a hybrid fan, scooter driving se7en dreaming commie (yup) I will be more than happy to mention how much I like the Chargers, the beefier the better. I wouldn't ever own one, but I'd be happy to rent one for some hooning and everyone I see in traffic makes me regain a tiny bit of hope for the American car buying public.

If one should drive something so wasteful, at least make it something which gives the driver something in return (like this, or an M5) rather than an Escalade or similar POS. Plus, I can see around a Charger.

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on GM Buckles To Jalopnik Pressure, Reveals Slightly Less Grainy Images Of Upcoming Lineup]]> The Cruze doesn't look too bad, but it's waaay too big for my liking.

There was just an article in the NYT about how the people switching to small cars are spending more than ever on options. The Mini is naturally the #1 in the options game ($18K entry level, may be optioned up to over $40K for the convertible) but most people who switch "down" to something smaller still want the creature comforts and decent design that they are now used to. Can't see GM doing anything for that market...

Maybe in five years they will respond with a Cadillac Aveo?

Top speed is becoming a rather useless feature; viz. the Veyron which is only so fast because it is sucked along by a black hole of pointlessness. At least the Bug looks good outside of the Teatro alla Scala during Milan fashion week.

I think all teh internet hate is due to the fact that we've seen this thing so many many times before, from the Vector to the Monte Carlo via the Cizeta and countless others, best forgotten.

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on Cyclist Clings To Road-Ragin' Ford Escort?]]> In NY, the roads are the main problem. It's wayyy dangerous to ride where one is supposed to, what with potholes and cardoor. Anyone who's ever been doored by a Masshole in a minivan will always be very patient with bicyclists...

I figure laws are of tertiary importance, primary is to not endanger/inconvenience anyone else and secondary is how quick one can get where one is going. Luckily, NYC cops usually seem to feel the same way.

That said, I'd gladly give my left nut for a Sagaris. Will I still get to pick my own colour?

]]>
<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on Are Cars Getting Uglier?]]> We are also approaching a truly post-modern approach to car design. This isn't necessarily bad nor good. There aren't really any rights or wrongs any more (Jedi mind trick?) because there is no identifiably "new" design. In the eighties one could easily identify a facelifted car: that old tired late seventies shoebox was now suddenly sporting some rounded corners and a bit less chrome, changed for black plastic. In the nineties, a facelift was even rounder, and all black rubber/plastic would be exchanged for bodycolored parts - see Volvo 850 vs S70.

But if one was to place two facelifted designs of today next to each other it would be impossible for anyone but the initiate to tell which one was the newer one. Anything goes, the only parameters which are still developing are various crash safety laws, coupled with certain technological developments. Hence all that "geometric" claptrap.

Cars are uglier than ever, swollen and chunky and no-necked. 250 GT Lusso FTW!

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on Chrysler To America: "Please, Please Buy Our 2008 Dodge Ram"]]> No bans necessary. Just double the gas tax. Voila, the Lotus Elise becomes a good choice, the Escalade not. And I know, buyers of expensive SUVs usually shouldn't have to consider gas prices, but the resale value will also plummet with more expensive gasoline. The double whammy should be enough for people to begin making somewhat wiser choices.

<![CDATA[mr.chophoppers commented on Smug Gets Home-Grown: 2011 Toyota Prius Officially To Be Built In United States]]> Yay, complete sentences! Oh, whoops.

As for the Prius, I always liked the looks of the first-gen but feel that they lost it on the second one. As for building one that looks like a normal car, it's not working so well for the Civic and Camry hybrids. Most Prius shoppers are sheep and want everyone to be able to tell that they are sheep trotting in the correct direction.

I also always liked the look of these (Renault Vesta):

To me functionality always looks good; the more single-minded the design the better.
