"Ahh the memories of youth.'75,Mom has a Corona (as Agbwin said,a Toyota was a Toyota dammit!"),great car but she wanted something "nicer",enter German luxury in the form of an Audi Fox,both Mom and Dad ended up hating it ("That Toyota will run circles around this thing" quoth my late father).Hence,in glorious 1977,the brand new Cordoba pulled into the driveway.Alas,no "Cooorin-thi-an" leather, but the velour. As a 14 year old in the 70's this was a cool car and my Mom is driving it!For more coolness (this is the late 70's remember),a few months later Dad buys a new pickup,a bright orange SR5 longbed with chrome spoke wheels and a sunroof, sweet! The 70's were just great no?Sheesh, seriously you youngsters, these were considered cool, don't ask me why,you just had to be there.
The Cordoba departed in '79 for a Corona LE 4 door lift back with a 5 speed.Nigh on 30 years later,my Mom has owned nothing but Toyota's,one of which being my quarter million mile + '90 Corolla wagon."
"Unfortunately for me,I distinctly remember "Corvette Summer" being the first R rated movie I was ever allowed to watch.Reno,1978,visiting my oldest sister with the parents, she and her roommates had that newfangled cable with the Home Box Office,Dad and I watched Corvette Summer while Mom and Sis were out.
The scarring memory of the movie aside,my sister worked for Harrah's and took us to the auto museum ("Uncle Bill" was famous for comping his employees and families).I'm sure the "National Auto Museum" is still quite impressive, but when Mr."
"Well, that just tears it,I'm obviously gay.Recently owned a LeBaron convertible, just purchased the last season of "Gilmore Girls" on DVD (yeah,I know,I'll be leaving my testicles at door). And now,the car I've always lusted after (but coupe, not 'vert),and am actively searching for,is also considered gay!I always thought I was enjoying sex,I must be wrong."
"@charles_barrett: I think "sprawl of venues" is quite the understatement.Seems to me it was everywhere from Simi Valley to my home county of Orange. My biggest memory of the no Ruskie Olympics was getting sent to the Anaheim Convention Center just as some big event was about to start.See,while you were wasting your time at that fancy pants CalTech,I was "living the dream",spending (at least one) of my should have been college years driving AAA tow trucks out of Westminster.AAA wanted you at a call in 20 minutes, took me an hour and half, and many angry radio calls from my dispatcher and the AAA dispatcher.Sorry,I'm stuck, traffic is just a tad heavy, and just for fun,the call was in the freaking parking lot, took me another 20 minutes to leave after a 5 minute call to unlock a door."
"Ok,the fiero-rari will always hold a soft spot in my heart, mainly due to a story told previously here, the dude that would show up regularly at our last restaurant with one, complete with comb-over and "Bandit" style Ferrari jacket. That being said,I vote the cloud, just because it's still looks so obviously like a Monte Carlo."
"@SundaySunday: You are f*&^ing kidding me!You have a copy of that album too!?!?You and I must have two of last specimens in captivity.Ironically, when I first got on this post,I thought,"Hey,I have that song",then I realized the last time I fired up the 'ol turntable,I played that album, still sitting on the the old Hitachi...."
"@Slantsick goes hybrid: Burns Oil and Rubber: "Wow, an El Camino with the giant cock on the outside."
I was wracking my brain for my own pithy comment, but I won't even bother, you win, hands down....."
"@Bumblebee: "Damn, I wish I had a woman who looked at me like that for inventing something as hokey as an intermittent windshield wiper."
The ever hot Lauren Graham, yes I'm one of the few heterosexual males who watched "Gilmore Girls"."
"Oh that is just sweet!I just "inherited" a '79 F150 4X4 from my neighbor Vernon,he just passed away about a month ago at 94,and damn,I still miss talking to him.Same truck basically, just way taller,no lift kit or anything, just the way they were built then, not to mention my beautiful two tone white and blue old beast doesn't have a straight body panel on her,the old girl has been rode hard and put away wet,but a trooper.I tried to outrun a storm last winter for a run to town, took the truck just in case (chaining up a car is a real pain in the ass).I lost the race,I drove home in a damn near blizzard, once I saw the "chain control" sign, the old beast and her snow tires were locked and loaded in four wheel drive, and the old girl got me home safely, and slowly."
"@layabout: Ya wuss!I'm 6'3" and did it in a Plymouth Champ, not saying it was easy though,I like your idea better. And thanks Jalopnik,my "first time" was in the back of '73 Pinto Squire Wagon (surprisingly roomy with the back seat folded down).Ahhhh, the memories, the scarring, scarring memories, like getting busted by the Orange County CA Sheriffs Department post fumbling (first time, lot's of fumbling around, not much actual sex). The nice deputies pretty much just snickered and sent us on our way, thankfully,at that age, alcohol was NOT involved."
