I had a well taken care of engine that after passing 100,000 miles it would fail emissions, also the alternators were faultier than average (mine went thru 5 in a 15 year period) . And the radiator fans are another common pain-in-the-ass. My engine was strong, stock and bone, always OEM parts, New timing belts at 80K, 160K, new spark plugs, the works, but it would fail the last 3 inspections in a row (6 years) and had some expensive AC coolant leaks, despite replacing parts there... It's an easy engine to tune upwards, but it blows up easily if you dont know what the hell you are doing. (Kids, a V6 Supra or Nissan engine ain't the same as a Mitsu, stupid idiots) I had to sell it at 170K miles, I think it could've easily reach 200K, if there were no emissions test to worry about.
Funny thing is, there is no other engine to replace the V6 GT version 222hp or the VR4 Twin Turbo 320hp....because the engine put a lot of torque at a very early range. The car is so heavy its needs this. You couldn't put, say an Evolution's engine in there. The torque range is too high for the size of the car. I would've died for a VR4, I once found the 'unicorn' VR4-Spyder and tried to buy it, but that was at the beginning of the credit crunch. No deal.... sigh....
I never had the pleasure to drive the (pre-chubby) Galant VR4 edition (The grandaddy of the Evos). That car oughta be a blast.
