<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Street-Racing Comcast Morons Leave 3-Year-Old Hospitalized]]> @LandofMinos:

No, that's how it works everywhere. We just put up more of a fight in the U.S. about that sort of thing, but more and more there are a bunch of weenies who want to make U.S. into socialist Europe. I would protest, but there's a shiny thing over there... is that American Idol?

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Street-Racing Comcast Morons Leave 3-Year-Old Hospitalized]]> The idea that "additional training" would have prevented this is laughable. Sorry, you can't train someone not to be an idiot.

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Four Door Convertibles?]]> @Isetta: What? I owned a 1967 Lincoln convertible for a while and never experienced this. Never even heard of it. Source please?

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Four Door Convertibles?]]> Anything without glass/roll-up windows doesn't count (sorry VW Thing, and arguably Jeep).

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 1982 AMC Eagle, Claimed Rust Free]]> Ehhh... been looking for an Eagle like this, but I must have manual trans.

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 1966 Buick Riviera, Plus Bonus Buick Poll]]> Again, I must protest. The '73 Riv is a bastardization of the beautiful boat-tail. It's like calling a V6 Camaro a "muscle car". 1973 is a terribly compromised, wussified boat-tail and I ask that you never mention it again linked to the word boat-tail. Please, for the love of god, get us some 1971 or 1972 goodness.

I'll take a Fiero over a Mister 2 any day.

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Buy A Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 And Put A Little Herr On Your Chest]]> @7Seven: I went over and looked at the M5 for sale on Laurel Canyon based on your comment (I live close by in Burbank). I was pretty excited until I peaked in the window and saw an automatic transmission.

It does have an M5 badge though, so no way you could have known.

It's a poser. Disgusting.

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 1974 Ford Maverick]]> Agreed that you never see Ford Pintos. Lump in Chevy Vega too. Even down here in SoCal they are a huge rarity (to say nothing of cold-weather areas where they rusted away 25 years ago).

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2010 Pontiac G8 El Camino, Revealed Live!]]> @TRAMS_AM - I guess I am the "Hemmings crowd". Look at a 1966 GTO. It's beautiful! Though that era has great styling all over so I agree the GTO doesn't necessarily "stick out", other than performance.

Now let's compare a 2004 Pontiac GTO to a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT (I forgot there actually was a Grand Am GT).

Pretty close in my book. But then again I think modern sedan/coupe styling is rather boring in general. At least models like the Cadillac CTS are shaking things up, though it's not quite my cup of tea.

So yeah if someone thinking automotive styling peaked between 1957-1967 puts them in the "Hemmings crowd" sign me up. Most modern styling is Boring with that capital B. But what do I know... I have a 1971 Buick Riviera GS. Tasteful? Not in the slightest! (More like polarizing. That's more fun).

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2010 Pontiac G8 El Camino, Revealed Live!]]> @TRAMS_AM - yeah, you're right, I just researched the pre-planned GTO (Monaro) lifespan via a web search. Didn't know the history.

I don't really disagree that it's a fine car. But did GM really expect to sell 18000 Holdens as the famed GTO? It's rather ludicrous. Tasteful? Sometimes a good thing. Not sure that's the best adjective you want for reviving a muscle car. Grand Am GT would have been a better name for it since that's what it looks like.

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 1977 Dodge Tradesman Van Has Star Wars Mural, Geek Love]]> Hmm, "Star Wars" and "ladies mobile" usually don't go hand-in-hand. Is this the vehicle Star Wars-themed lounge singer Bill Murray (SNL) drove 30 years ago?

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2010 Pontiac G8 El Camino, Revealed Live!]]> @TRAMS_AM: so the amazingly boring look of the GTO had nothing to do with its demise?

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2010 Pontiac G8 El Camino, Revealed Live!]]> Some thoughts:

1. Without stick shift available, it sucks.

2. If it is going to be automatic at least give it a column shift and a bench seat! What's the point of one of these if you can't cram 3 people into it?

3. El Camino is Chevy. Period. Using it on Pontiac is borderline blasphemy.

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2008 Pontiac G8 GT]]> automatic trans = this car sucks

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco Fully Unveiled]]> Will the diesel be for sale in all 50 U.S. states like the rest of VW's upcoming next-gen diesels?

I had a 2002 VW TDI Jetta wagon. FANTASTIC car. Only got rid of it because the idiot VW dealer screwed it up (VW dealers in SoCal are universally terrible in my experience).

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on 1973 Buick Riviera]]> I proudly own a 1971 Riv. As all boattail aficionados will tell you, that is the One True Boattail.

I scoff at this 1973 with its wimpy tail and *gasp* fuel filler door on the rear side!

My 1971 Riviera GS is quite rare. I think only about 2500 or so were made.

Gas can be $10/gallon and I'll still drive the thing around. I like it that much. Now I just need to fix the damn exhaust manifold leak...

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Workhorse Engine of the Day: Small-Block Chevrolet]]> The only thing I don't like about these engines is the tendency to put them into anything they'll fit. Not just BOP (a cousin at least) but *gasp* I've seen Fords with small-block Chevys in them (crappy Model A hotrods for example).

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Which Brand Needs To Die?]]> @Peter S.:

Didn't the Grand National have an automatic transmission? So, so stupid.

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Hatchback Hello: GM to Plug Astra With Test Drives to Win Friends]]> Finally, a stick shift standard from GM. Maybe this thing does have a chance.

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Which Brand Needs To Die?]]> Buick is going to get votes on this one as long as it is the boring old people golf car (Tiger Woods does not help).

GM seems to do a half-hearted job re-inventing the brand with PERFORMANCE roots every decade (Grand National, supercharged Regal GS) but they need to get serious.

Where's the "GS" option today? Heck what about the GS model itself back in 1970 or so? Manual transmission with performance 455... Buick was a monster. 1971 Riviera... boattail awesomeness. 1965 Skylark convertible - practically a perfect car.

Yeesh, when you look at what happened to Buick in the mid-1970's it is a real shame. Retro is all the rage right now. Take some inspiration from the Buick of the 60's.

<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Cadillac to Get Smaller, Rear-Drive Sedan, Confound BMW]]> This will be never be a true BMW competitor unless it offers manual transmission. If it does, consider me interested. If there's no clutch forget it.

(I still think Lincoln screwed up not marketing the manual trans in the LS, and the fact that it was only available with the V6).

]]>
<![CDATA[carlivar commented on Workhorse Engine of the Day: Ford Flathead V8]]> This is very worthy of its nomination. What a shame that 99% of '32-33 Fords probably no longer have their original engines (or much original anything... someone needs to start a Save The 32-33 Fords Club).

Anyway, I also nominate the Ford 385 engine family, though I'm not sure if multiple displacements count or not. The 460 alone should be enough. From 1968 Lincolns to 1980's vans to RVs of all sorts, everyone loves the good ol' 460. 30 years is a long time too.
