I remember the 1st gen Prius and wanted to point out the same thing. The reason why the Prius is successful is that the first gen was not put on a pedestal in the media akin to a messiah; Toyota launched it quietly, took all the real world experience from it, killed it off quickly (and quietly) and developed a 2nd gen that's eons better than the 1st.
