<![CDATA[Comments from anaxomander]]> <![CDATA[Comments from anaxomander]]> <![CDATA[anaxomander commented on Plug-In Hybrid Pickup To Get 100 MPG, Sticker Of Calvin Peeing On Our Foreign Oil Dependency]]> Every time this topic comes up, people post questions like "where's the electricity coming from?" as if no one's ever thought of that before. Do a little research, folks. You're already on the internet.
Like badco/LoG (rolls right off the tongue!) says, the efficiency of a coal fired plant is far, far higher than even the stingiest sub-liter Honda. And yes, the grid is often taxed but *not at night*. As for coal--yes it's dirty to mine, ruins the rivers, mountains, and makes baby Jesus cry... but we have a hell of a lot of it. As in, decades worth. Whether we want to strip mine all of Wyoming is another issue.

<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on What's The Worst Car Color Combination?]]> None of the old (pre '88 or so) cars in this comment section are actually bad. Just as California cars *used* to become smog exempt after 30 years, so too do ridiculous paint jobs and styling abortions become charmingly tacky after 20 or 30 years. That's right, I'm looking at you, woodgrain, striped Pinto, T-bird...

Amen. Not to mention the fact that there are more Americans in prison than there are working on farms. I'm not saying "Rotang" doesn't need to pull stumps and break down combines for a living, but he's part of a vanishingly small minority if he does. Specialty niche vehicles are awesome, but they are what they are.

<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on Think You've Got It Bad? Gas Hits $14.76 a Gallon In Britain]]> There's also the fact that when gas costs $2.50/litre in the UK, it's not all going into the pockets of the Saudis or Exxon/Esso. There's a ton of tax revenue that can be used for buying Marmite and fertilizing Prince Charles' organic vegetable garden instead.

]]>
<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on The SUV Is Dead. Long Live The SUV.]]> @frank_rizzo:
Fair enough, but I don't thing anyone here is actually talking about banning SUVs. What *would* make sense is something like taxing >6000lb GVW vehicles the same as passenger cars or even enforcing local restrictions on surface road GVW. (Why should my tax dollars pay to fix the potholes you made with your Canyonero, etc.)
There's a huge, huge distance between a completely free market (which is not what we actually have in the United States) and mean nasty inefficient communism, with all sort of financial levers that don't involve the gummin't telling you what you can and cannot do.

Just to add to that: Toyota, for example, has been selling to/building for the same global customers and has managed to make--rather than lose--a ton of money. They make what I consider to be really, really boring cars, but they make them well, and profitably.

]]>
<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on Are Hybrids Bunk?]]> I'd agree that most hybrids are pretty underwhelming, but I don't think any of the American versions are good examples. If you look at a ground-up design like the Prius or Insight or even the Civic hybrid, the difference is a lot more meaningful--if still not any better than diesel.
One other consideration (until they reached their quota) for Bay Area folks was the carpool lane stickers. Getting a civic hybrid for a few thousand extra makes a lot more sense when you save 15 minutes and a few bucks on the toll every morning. I have a couple friends here who have hybrids for just such healthy, selfish reasons.

<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on Saab 95 Survives San Francisco Streets, Plus Bonus Lancia]]> I'm not crazy about the two-tone job on that 95, but it is amazingly clean. I prefer the look the early shortnose 2-strokes, but at least this is an early enough V4 model to still have the metal dash and toggle switches.
The Fulvia tho'? Bestill my heart. I don't know if there's another FWD out there that makes me quite as hot and bothered.

]]>
<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on PCH, Fun With Honda Engines Edition: NSX-Powered Legend or Turbo Civic?]]> Paint job? Haven't you guys heard about the CHP's fleet of late 80s civic sedans? It was right before they switched over to Nissan Pulsars. It's perfect. All it's missing is a NO FEAR sticker on the front windshield and a giant marijuana leaf on the back.
What I really want to know, though, is how the hell do you mount an engine longitudinally in a Legend? Going from a mid-rear setup to a front-front sounds like hell to me.

<![CDATA[anaxomander commented on Pimps, Pirates, and PMS: The Art Cars Of The 24 Hours of LeMons]]> Great stuff. Another point in the LeMons cars' favor: art cars, besides appearing in the occasional "How Berkeley Can you Be?" procession (not that there's anything wrong with that) mostly just sit there around corner from the health food store or down the street from the organic bagel shop, gathering pollen and the odd parking ticket.
It's something else entirely to spend months building one of these babies and then spend a weekend crashing it into other cars. It's the righteous art-car circle of life or something.
