You know, this is not the solution to gay teenagers being terrorized and committing suicide. Pointing out that someone is "different" (after all, if they weren't different, there would be nothing to point out) only highlights that difference, and could further stigmatization.
Is it a sign that a piece of my soul has died that I wish the body, instead, had a head, and said head was bashed in, likely with a hammer, just for the headlines?
Look, I didn't complain that Gawker's new slogan sounds a lot like the slogan for the stellar 90s TV show Early Edition. (I'd like to see an EE reunion, where he gets tomorrow's blogs today. Or maybe a version where he has less time to save people because of the compressed news cycle.)
Tough to write new pop music that doesn't have hints and flavors of past hits. The thing that stands out most about the Waterfalls (verse) and Express Yourself (chorus) comparisons is all three use slightly less common interval patterns at times, making the similarities easier to hear/pick out.
It's not about poll workers preventing people from voting. It's about who is more likely to have drivers licenses and photo IDs in the first place.
The argument goes: Poor people are less likely to have drivers licenses - they are less likely to own cars and drive, more likely to use public transportation, and don't forget it costs time and money to get a license. Sometimes you need to show many pieces of identification, which can be bank statements or high school diplomas - which poor people are less likely to have. Minorities and immigrants are more likely to be poor.
Courts have established that if application of a law means minorities are disproportionately affected, that's discrimination. Obviously nobody's going to write a law that specifically says black or hispanic people can't do X,Y or Z, or get less money from programs. So courts have looked at the practical effect of policies. And the practical effect of this kind of policy is it keeps minorities from voting. (Think the poll tax or literacy tests.)
