<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on Five Cool Things We Learned About NASCAR This Weekend]]> @Mad_Science: I think you meant Circus Maximus, The coliseum isn't exactly 'set up' for racing of anysort, it's more a battle arena for christians vs lions vs gladiators...
Circus Maximus is the 'famous' Chariot racetrack (as seen in Ben Hur, the movie)

And I don't know why they raced counterclockwise either,

But I do know that most of the horse races in the world are raced in that direction as well, (except for the quarterhorse racing, the equine version of drag racing)

Perhaps that is part of the reason why we see most circut races running that way, Nothing more then "Tradition"

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on Project Car Hell: R33 Skyline GT-R or Aston Martin Lagonda?]]> The lagona, Becausae it looks even more like a spaceship then the Delorean used in Back to the future

It's only the gull wing doors that got the Delorean the role in that movie, I swear they would have gone for the Lagonda if it had lift-up-doors

Hmmm, I've just given myself a brainwave...

Aston Martin Lagonda, With Gullwings, FTW! (yes, I'm going to a bad bad place)

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on PCH, 500 Bucks Worth Of Rust Edition: Skoda Felicia or Burma Jeep?]]> @zeet: "how hard can it be" are the Famous last words of any Jalopnik starting down the path of the evil evil PCH

even though, I agreed with ya and voted for the skoda, Military stuff, Even when it's rare is usually built tough, with fairly simplistic construction, with flat panels and whatnot, e'en though it's rusty, that Burma Jeep ain't got the goods on a 'mostly there' near 50 year old Skoda,

Yeah, Definitely PCH right there

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on Concours D'Ignorance May Be Greatest Idea In Auto Show History]]> @TurboBrick: Actually, the Pony was Hyundai's version of BMC's Marina, sorta Similar to the Vega/Pinto, only made by Leyland, with Mitsubish Engines and ford Cortina bits

Yes, They were THAT evil

Being made by Hyundai only made them slightly less evil then the original BMC Marina, but that doesn't stop them being shudderworthy in my mind

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on PCH, Japanese Nostalgia Edition: 1969 Toyota Crown or 1959 Datsun 1000?]]> the DAustin is described as being "ruff" (yes it barks)

if the owner is claiming it's a dog, how much more PCH can it be?

Besides, A crown has a certain anonymity, people'll see it, see the toyota badging and go "oh, it's a toyota" and leave it at that. whereas the Datsun? it's more a case of "what is it?"

Give it a SR20DET and the hot-rod treatment, and you're cruising in style baby!

Ol Datsun all the way to the seventh level for me

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on 2009 Mercedes Benz G-Class Gets More Power, Still Delightfully Ugly]]> @Mad_Science: Oh I won't deny that "they" meaning landrovers, g-wagens, wranglers, etc, are all based on the same concept as the original willys/ford GP (jeep)

But I would have to disagree with the wrangler being the 'best factory offroad ever', sorry, but the original landrover tops it out, cos well, they never rust *grins*

And I am not confusing my vehicles here, I'm well aware of the history of both the LandRover and the Range Rover, the original Range Rover didn't even have carpets, Wash Down Mats, I'm afraid, it wasn't til the late seventies that it got all the creature comforts, like integrated aircon (early aircon units were a seperate part from the rest of the HV system). Yes, it grew into a yuppiemobile, but before that, it was too simple to really be called that.

Oh, and getting stuck in any vehicle is easy, I've seen a bogged Catapiller D9 before, Unsurprisingly, it's all down to driver ability (and surprisingly, the harder it is to get a vehicle stuck, it seems it's even harder to unstick said vehicle)

]]>
<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on 2009 Mercedes Benz G-Class Gets More Power, Still Delightfully Ugly]]> @No_Brakes: I have two words for you "Range Rover"

Sure, it might be a large luxo barge now, but when it started life, it was a fairly stripped out vehicle, with go-anywhere ability and comfort for four people.

Now? it's one of the priciest offroading capable vehicles on the market, it still has the abilities that it's forebears had, but it's full leather interior and assorted luxuries brings it up to S class merc and bmw 7 series luxury

As for your jeep? Show me the equivilant _modern_ jeep that's built in the same way as you suggest, and I'll be more then willing to talk.

Put simply Cars have evolved, So have 4wds, Used to be, a radio and heater were an option, now? they're so standard that it's a big surprise when a car doesn't have one installed. People expect better interiors and appointments in their vehicles.

And the G-Wagen, with whatever it's faults may be, Has lasted thirty years without Major change to the format, I can think of only a couple of vehicles that have done so, Amusingly, One of them is the Defender, Another is the Unimog, a third of course, is the Pinzgauer. All military vehicles, all quite capable of doing the task demanded of them, and all fundementally unchanged from what they were thirty years ago

]]>
<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on 2009 Mercedes Benz G-Class Gets More Power, Still Delightfully Ugly]]> the thing is, in terms of _real_ off road ability, This rates up there with the good ol Defender and old Jeep, Not to mention the Hummer1 and various other Heavy Duty MilSpec vehicles. Hell, you could almost say that the AMG version is the RamboLambo of the 21st century

Oh wait, It was designed as a military vehicle in the first place, wasn't it?

Hooray for MilSpec! Still running strong after 30 years (BMW have NOTHING that can touch the G-wagen in terms of outright coolness)

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on Oshawa, Ontario GM Plant To Build Mysterious Second RWD Vehicle]]> It's almost a given that whatever is built alongside Camaro is going to be on the same Platform, That means Zeta.

Having said that, I doubt very strongly that it'd be any Existing Vehicle being built on the platform (ie, Pontiac G8, or any of the holden derivitives)

Having said that, my bet is on the Impala/Caprice, they're certainly deserving nameplates to have RWD and V8 power,

Mmm, I'd take one in black, with a LS3

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir Special Edition Shows Bugatti's Dark Side]]> @Cameron Thirteen: according to what I remember of the car, the tv screen was a reversing camera, seeing as the bodywork didn't exactly allow rear view mirrors

The true nature of the car was to showcase GM Holden's new V8 engine which they had developed. the next year saw the engine being released to the general public with either a 256ci or a 308ci capacity

of course, there's rumours floating around that the Muira was inspired by the Hurricane. hence one could say this is the grandaddy of all mid-engined supercars

(oh, and in those times, Australia didn't have a top speed, the police weren't quite as strict about it in those days, the speed limit was 'unrestricted' but 'no dangerous driving' which was open to interperatation)

Oh, and about the Veyron? it seems like just a regular paint/interior package, There's probably not a heck of a lot different between the specifications with this car, and that of every other veyron on the planet (not that those specs are anything to sneeze at)

Yep, the best of both worlds, Mind you, I don't think there'd be too many of them in the US, but just think, all the time you can spend on lucas AND the hydropneumatic suspension

I voted for the Jag BTW, the words 'does not run' trumps 'leaky hydrolics" any day in my book

<![CDATA[LaughingAtFate commented on 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Ogled By Forum Members - New Info Leaked]]> I'm asking why there's surprise at the mention of there being IRS, the zeta platform has 4 link IRS as standard (in fact, it has no other type of rear axle)

The supercharging doesn't surprise me either, Remember Lutz's CAFE plan? smaller displacement engines with assisted puffer power, probably be a blower sitting on the v6 doing the duties

and given that the base holden commodore weight is 'between 3000 and 4000 lbs' I'd be very surprised if it wasn't similar for the camaro, in other words, These guys were told NOTHING new, just pretty pictures time

Well, apart from the silly flappy paddles but they're overrated anyway, Gimmicky at the best of times (just ask Jeremy Clarkson)
