<![CDATA[Feds commented on Can You Come Up With A Better Auto Product Placement Plot?]]> @Feds:

Mid way through Season 1 we come across vast fields of prius'. People live their whole lives strapped in the driver's seat, mesmerized by the little display that shows their vital energy flowing out of their bodies and into the Matrix.

The Chevy-Driving Heros free a young man from the Prius and name him GEO. They expect that he'll be able to show others that the Chevy reality is better than living your life in a Pruis staring at a screen.

Unfortunately, he doesn't manage to convince anyone to get out of their Toyotas, and is quietly killed off 2 episodes later.

]]>
<![CDATA[Feds commented on Canada Launches Old Car Retirement Program, Green Hypocrisy Continues]]> @Wes Siler:

Nobody likes a loose spotted owl.. Or maybe we need looser spotted owls, considering their population troubles... But on the whole, I agree with what you say.

As @Maymar - now with 37% less anonymity: pointed out, other than CO2, new cars put out no polution. Something to the effect of painting your living room puts out more polution than driving a Tahoe from Vancouver to Toronto and back...

I can get behind this for smoking, rotten, leaking clunkers, but a well maintained older car could be more beneficial to the environment.

It really goes back to reducing income tax, and increasing consumption tax (which the liberals are proposing, but calling a "green tax"). Add $1/litre to the gas tax, but make new car purchase price a tax write-off, and you'd transform your fleet in ~2 years.

For me, it comes down to this: If governments relaxed their miriad safety requirements, and spent some effort on driver training and re-assessment, we could have our cake and eat it too. And by "cake" I mean "reduced vehicular fatalities" and by "Eat it too" I mean "light-weight, efficient, fun cars to drive".

]]>
<![CDATA[Feds commented on Canada Launches Old Car Retirement Program, Green Hypocrisy Continues]]> Hrm.... I am a little conflicted on this, since it directly targets me, as an Ontarian driving a 24 year old vehicle.

My 1984 B2000, for example, gets 10l/100km regardless of load, speed, etc. I have seen better than 8l/100, but not since I mounted the 31" goodyears.

OTOH, with carburettor and non-op catalytic converter, standing behind it makes your eyes water. So, "smog causing chemicals" (HC, CO, NOx) are through the roof, and if you have been in So-Ont this summer, it's been pretty hazy.

A brand-spanking B2300 (Now With Mazda-Power!) gets 9.9 city and 7.5 highway, according to energuide... So 0% improvement in mileage, but the air coming out of the pipe is likely cleaner than the air going in.

That said, the new truck is ~$20k. My current truck is $0. The B2300 has no bed tie downs, a smaller bed, and can not be serviced by the tool kit under my seat.

IF both Federal and Provincial governments were willing to let me write the purchase price of the truck off my INCOME tax, I could actually afford to buy the new truck with no out of pocket to me. They still get the sales tax, the air-con tax, registration fee, and general boost to the economy, so everybody wins. Since my plan would require 2 different governments to think with their heads, I'll just keep the B2k, plant 2 trees, save the environment, and continue to put a car payment a month into my RRSP.

<![CDATA[Feds commented on Why Aren't All Small Cars Selling?]]> @rlj676:

Frightening, but I agree with you on the last point. People look at the financial hit they are going to take on their rolling bad decision, and decide to suffer through the high prices.

This, of course, is where we take separate roads...

Sustained high gas prices are going to lead to successive lease-cycle downsizing ( Explorer -> CX-9 -> CX-7 -> Mazda5) over the next 10-or-so years. Right now, however, there is no compelling small (or, frankly, mid-sized) CAR that is going to make people abandon their current rides.

If The General were to drop Alfa Romeo's lineup onto their lots tomorrow, people would make the jump.
