My heart goes out to the families and friends of our lost Special Operators. May God help bring peace and condolence to the grieving.
To those who would use this thread as a pedestal to spew their politcal crap and conspiracy theories should be ashamed of yourselves. I am fighting right now and my friends have died to give you the right to speak your mind, but it doesn't mean you have to exercise it. Grow up and learn some decency and respect. For those of you who are admins and promote that sort of stuff on these threads should also be ashamed of yourselves and should probably have your admin privileges reevaluated. Find another soap box.
The point of the articles is to raise awareness. Jalopnik does similar things with their own articles. Since when has more government regulation on the modifying of a car been "cool"? Last I checked Big Government did in fact change what the auto-companies can and can't build when it comes to cars. CAFE standard anyone? Fortunately technology is saving the performance enthusiast from losing out on some wicked speed and power. Oh, and has anyone actually tried modifying their car here on this website? Blue lights, underglow kits, modification of signal markers, tinting of windows, removing front license plates... these things get you some serious tickets if someone wants to enforce them. You might criticize those mods b/c they aren't to your specific taste, but that is pretty immature and close minded don't you think? Now you might make the argument of, "well they aren't always enforced so you can get away with it normally." What type of b/s answer is that? If we have laws we should enforce them. If we don't enforce laws why do we have them?
i would say that customer care should also be factored into this equation. a bmw dealership has never let me take an m3 out on the street and hoon it down a back road. almost any ford dealer will let you take out a mustang gt and romp on it. i've been encouraged several times in fact.
in that case too, future owners be warned, i frequent ford dealerships in the hudson valley area. i always request manual transmission vehicles to feel the evolution of the car.
btw, i own an '05 S197 w/ the 281 in it. the newer stangs, '07-'09 have much improved interiors, a lighter clutch, and a smoother more precise stick. if the evolutionary ladder has continued its upward progress the new '11 should be amazing!
@Ollie: I actually own and race an '05 S197. I have modified the suspension, added some chassis stiffening and romp around road courses and solo II events regularly. IRS is very good in real world pot hole roads, but the live rear axle on a mustang is more than capable of hanging with IRS on a track when properly dialed in. try driving both before you knock the mustang. any ford dealer will let you take it out.
in all fairness this isn't that bad in a stereotypical sense. sure, it isn't very deep, but for what looks to be a video made by a kid and a camera it is alright. best of luck b-shoc, your music is a little weak and repetitive, your ryhmes derivative and boring and you might want to check the harmonies in your chorus. it just sounds really weird, like really unresolved.
oh, and he isn't pushing his beliefs on anyone. stating an opinion isn't forcing something. that is kind of how freedom of speech works.
@lilwillie: I agree with the idea that people should be responsible for their own safety. This learned helplessness that has become so prevalent in today's society is appalling. Why don't I have the right to choose if I want to be safe and wear my seatbelt or not? No one will deny that seatbelts will help you in an accident, but the Nanny-State mentality that I'm too stupid to figure it out on my own is ridiculous. It baffles me that people who are liberal (and please tell me if you are and agree with me b/c I bet there aren't any) and espouse that everyone should be treated like equals and protected under the law to live the life they want to are the same people who want to tell me what to do and how to do it. This contradiction of absolving the individual of any sort of power to be a grown man or woman is absolutely frustrating. Look at yourselves and tell me you really believe that people should be equal and then we can talk b/c right now you are operating under a false premise.
Oh, that last part was directed not at willie, but at those who had replied to him.
awesome story. it is nice when police officers make those discretionary decisions like that. i really enjoyed the read and enjoyed the picture of the charger. a ride like that even today would be kinda cool for a college or highschool kid.
yeah, the sense of danger isn't readily apparent to a tv viewing audience b/c there is little passing and a lot of space between cars normally.
the sense of speed isn't readily apparent either. tv makes racing look slower than it is.
there is no connection for americans in f1 because no US automaker parttakes in it. people want to see their aveo or caliber doing 210, screw ferraris.
I'm glad to hear Ford is doing well! I'm a 3rd gen Ford driver and fan so seeing the end of the low quality 90's and 00's and a profit at Ford is wonderful news.
The 90's and 00's nearly turned my family into a GM family. Windstar quality issues, Taurus quality issues, Escape quality issues, Explorer quality issues... oh and SVT Contour issues (not the Contour's fault, but that is another story). GM going bankrupt was the only thing that kept my father buying Fords after I moved out of the house.
Here are my good graces for FoMoCo and a hope of a long and prosperous future. Keep building inexpensive, fun, quality cars!
it looks like a concept vehicle with the non-traditional square lamps. the 300C is still a beautiful car today and certainly a looker. i didn't think the car would age well, but i was wrong.
If a third attempt at a comeback Monaro is successful, hopefully that will bring back the Falcon Coupe. I loved the XB Falcon Coupe driven by Mad Max and a proper Aussie coupe war would be fun to read about!
@SlowMo (now with Rusty the Miata in the family): hoon them? the idea of planting a butt load of lithium ion into a car and then requiring 7 to 8 hours to charge so you can drive 100 to 200 miles does not lend itself to hoonage. i don't consider this simply flaming on hybrids or electics either. serious concerns are raised with a little bit of bitching mixed in.electrics don't have enough range. their long term reliability and maintenance is a serious concern. working on the wiring of a car is already tough enough as it is.This movement toward more complicated is better defies what has logically worked for centeries. KISS fellas! KISS!
I completely fail to see the sporting aspirations of this vehicle. This isn't some sports "car", this is simply an "automobile" with an emphasis on the "auto" part. Please stop pretending heavy vehicles like the Honda CR-Z and this Prius are sporting. I don't pretend my 05 Mustang is a sports car. For that matter I would request that all hybrids not be called cars at all. They are accurately described as "automobiles". I hope people can keep that straight. A car has transcended the mere descriptor of what it does. A car has a soul and this just doesn't look it.
@clinto: I don't think that is necessarily true. The Band of Brothers series and Saving Private Ryan are roundly applauded in the Army community and I believe the rest of the military as well.
The issue isn't the source material I think. Think of the Lord of the Rings or the more popular recent military flicks: Black Hawk Down. Those movies could have sucked. Jarhead is a good example of a high budget, but crumby war flick. If the producer and director actually care about their subject and really do want to do it right; get the details right etc., then a good movie will happen because cars are in fact interesting. We just have to wait until someone cares.
If you are a person who isn't afraid of watching anime there is a great series about cars there.
Initial D is actually a really good, down to earth look at the Japanese drifting culture. The first season isn't very good at all, but it "picks up speed" in the following seasons and can be very interesting and involving if you give it a shot.
Wangan Midnight is also another series that is pretty good. I have to admit to watching this after I was already hooked on Initial D so I was looking for more... If I had seen this first it probably would have only been okay. WM is about highway bombing around Tokyo and is actually extremely realistic. It follows a young guy who cruises a loop of highway going as fast as he can and thereby meets other people who race along that stretch of highway.
The Chinese live-action release of Initial D is also a pretty good movie. If you don't mind subtitles it has some pretty good driving and the story is decidedly B-movie, but at least keeps it realistic and not Fast and Furious stupid.
That does suck... but as you can see in the picture, the Cobra is taking up two spots...
If anyone lives in New York there is a massive (100 cars?) show every Wednesday at Bear Mountain Lodge every Wednesday, 1800 starting in May through September. They have all kinds of cars from monster trucks, exotics, classics, and modern cars. Anyone can show, you just pay like $5 and park in the grass. It is honestly one of the better things about living so far from a real race track (Monticello doesn't count since they are members only...).
@dtown_clunker: The drift angle would be limited by the maximum angle his tires could turn. Those fat front tires probably don't allow for a very tight turning circle.
