@ttyymmnn: Shhhhhh. Don't tell him it's misspelled.
@SpikeJnz - Arbiter of Awesome: Uhhh, is this a joke? Is that what this previously auto niche site actually is now, huffy pedants and self-appointed cartoon judges of local status dishing out coolness rankings?
@BrtStlnd: Good on ya, I did leave room for your type in the "enjoyment of the machine" subset. I do, however, think, while you may be the majority of Jalopnik-reading BMW owners, you're in the vast minority of BMW owners full stop. BMW clearly realizes this as well and markets to it.
@zekestone: I'm more than a little curious as to what these documents are.
@jbh1126 flurries in the forecast=OPPO!!: The worst part is that you think an opening shot of sarcastic nitpicking is being civil. Start with civility, and it will be returned. I think I shall stay as long as this sort of thing remains, blessedly, relatively rare here.
@nileppezdel77: Yarp indeed. The upside to this stereotype is the immaculate 20 year old Cadillacs with 70k miles being unloaded by children and grandchildren for cheap because they wouldn't be caught dead in such a thing.
@Bimmerjared: I would reply, how many actually want the performance for the performance, or what the content for the content. That is, how much to these things actually give the users utility as opposed to whether they themselvs are part of the image? I.e. the image of the upwardly mobile YET performance-oriented.
@jbh1126 flurries in the forecast=OPPO!!: Correction, that's ONE of the questions. If you look at the other replies, people have chosen to answer the same quesrtion I did, or one of the other ones, or discuss related topics. This is the sort of thing that happens is these forums. If you don't care for this particular discussion, you can join one of the other ones. Alternatively, you can also choose to piss off.
@jip1080: This has the allure of truthiness. It seems that religious drivers are quite similar to hippie drivers. The rear-mounted Jesus fish is approximately equivalent to an organge triangle as to what speed you can expect to go.

Which is curious. If you believe in an afterlife, wouldn't that make you less risk-averse?
@jbh1126 flurries in the forecast=OPPO!!: Of course, we hardly need generalities when pricks so quickly identify themselves by their own words.
Generally yes, and here's why: a BMW isn't just an upscale car, and it isn't just a status symbol either. It's part of a uniform. It's not that they are needed or even necessarily that wanted. They are just what is done for some people.

Now I'm not saying there are not certain people who buy one because they are genuine car nuts and the BMW appeals to them on the basis of genuine enjoyment of the machine, I'm just saying that's a huge minority.

The majority is the above-described species of Asshatus Yuppus. Such people, having bought the BMW as they did the Brooks Brothers suit, simply because it is done, have likely never had an original thought in their lives. They have found their "winning" team and donned the unifrom. Such people tend to be insufferable. Being fundamentally uninteresting, they have nothing to talk about.

Save for their BMWs.
Speaking of DeLoreans and crack pipes, what the hell is this: [chicago.craigslist.org]
Finally, a '70's British project that will suck down cash faster than anything made by British Leyland.
@Vette5885: +1. If you're going to take risks, not all of them will work. That's why they're called risks. The alternative, risk-aversion, reasults in a sea of beigemobiles, and isn't that the worst outcome of all?
@DeadFlorist: And the '73 is just about the most desirable year (chrome bumpers 1275 A series engine, round rear wheel arches. Less desirable years (read, rubber bumpers) are even cheaper.
@Foo2rama: I beg to diffah, sah. Aside from the more collector-y frogeyes, the Spridget is priced way below its fun factor. I bought a rust-free Virginia '73 Midget for $3500 earlier this year in loved, turnkey condition and had a blast with its go kart handling all summer.
Spridget! Even grumpy old Englishmen think so!
@Therage: I believe most of the trained monkeys on welfare are in the major banks and Wall Street. Let's see if our new Republican congress will start making them pull their own weight. I'm going to highly doubt it.
@Therage: "I'm not about to get into a debate/waste my time" is a good place to stop. A better place to stop would have been before the whole Detroit/Democrats/union-bashing thing. This is a car blog. Go har har with the Reaganaughts elsewhere.
