In a stunning come-from-behind victory, Spens PeaBot has bested the competition in the GEM Peapod Photoshop Contest. As a result, Spen will be receiving the iPod Touch donated by the folks at GEM for his labors. The competition was fierce, with Orca Pod jumping to an early and commanding lead, but the PeaBot kept on truckin', racking up votes over the duration of the poll. When we kicked off the original GEM Peapod Photoshop contest, it was more as a lark than anything else, but the folks on the GEM Peapod team discovered it and thought it was a brilliant idea. So brilliant, in fact, that although Chrysler isn't a sponsor of the contest, they've graciously offered to supply an iPod Touch as a grand prize for the winner in exchange for us telling you "If you'd like more information on the GEM Peapod, click here." Seems fair to us. Now, considering the ante has been substantially upped from a virtual pat on the back to a free piece of sweet tech, we figured it was only fair to re-open the contest for all you creative types out there. All the old submissions (on time and late) will remain eligible, so no need to worry if you made one for the fun of it. The resulting 42 entries range from cute and cuddly Peapods to nightmare fuel Peapods — and everything in between. When we spotted the GEM Peapod outside of Chrysler's world headquarters in Auburn Hills and later with an actual press release, we couldn't help but think it has a face made for photochopping. We mean come on, it's so smiley! As a result, we want you to put your clever caps on and chop the heck out of this thing. Don't feel limited to the gated, smiley community, there's always the possibility of making it frowny too. Or a tyrannosaurus rex. Whatever you want, just use your imagination. We got a look at the Chrysler "Peapod" this morning, though at the time we didn't know it was actually the GEM Peapod. The "Global Electric Motorcars" all-electric range of "community vehicles" has been on sale for ten years now. The Peapod is the latest concept set up for a debut in GEM's 2009 lineup, which also gets an updated and greenwashed name - GreenEcoMobility (blech). Our invitation to the Chrysler press event debuting their selection of electric vehicles seems to have been lost in the mail, but we decided to head up to the Auburn Hills headquarters after seeing the Proton Lotus Europa Dodge EV debut on CNBC this morning to see what the hoopla was all about. That's where we caught this second Chrysler EV concept, nicknamed by CNBC's Phil LeBeau "Peapod," being trucked away for safe cover. We don't know whether that's the actual name, but Chrysler CEO Bob "The Builder" Nardelli called it an electric vehicle for "gated communities." Hmm, and what would the electric vehicle for non-gated communities be, because we've yet to see one that seems to fit that particular tagline. We were only able to get a couple of shots off, but the EV is definitely concept only for now and looks to have no interior. Chrysler is promising something by this afternoon, but while they figure out this whole "PR" thing, feel free to enjoy this smiley little car. Look how happy it is! More »
