What appears to be a lightly camouflaged Opel Insignia is most likely a development mule for the next-generation Saab 9-3 — despite Vince Burlapp's speculation that it's a 9-5. The previous 9-3 was built on the Vectra's Epsilon platform; Insignia is replacing Vectra, which makes the Saab variant here a 9-3. What we can't see in these photos is whether this mule is carrying Turbo X XWD running gear, but it makes sense for the Saab line to take advantage of available cross-wheel drive throughout the next generation of vehicles. What also remains to be seen is where GM will take the styling direction for the Swedish brand, which is desperately in need of differentiation in a crowded and competitive sport-luxury car market. Fast Lane Daily's insomniac spy photographer, Keith, spotted this abundant collection of General Motors products taking a break from some high-altitude testing in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Most obvious is the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe, but also tagging along were a couple of small hatchbacks, one of which looks to be the 2011 Chevy Beat. Judging from these shots taken by KGP at the Nürburgring, GM is already working up a high-performance version of the new Opel Insignia. Suspected to be powered by a twin-turbo version of the 2.8-liter V6 found in the standard Insignia, the added boost should up output to at least 300 HP. In Britain, the car will likely be called the Vauxhall Insignia VXR, but the rest of Europe will know it as the Opel Insignia OPC. There's no official word on plans to bring the car stateside as a Saturn Aura Redline, but with the possibility of an AWD system like that on the Saab 9-3 Turbo X, such a car could be an affordable Audi alternative for those of us living in the snowbelt. We haven't gotten official photos of the 2009 Opel Insignia, yet, but we're going to guess that the 2009 Vauxhall Insignia, its British counterpart, is going to have the same interior and we have those official pictures. Following the Opel DNA, there's the long center console leading up to a center-mounted display screen. Hopefully, you like this design as it could influence one or two future cars that could be built off this platform. Nothing important, just the 2011 Saturn Aura, 2011 Pontiac G6, 2010 Chevy Malibu and a couple of others. It's a shame the folks at Opel went through all that trouble to tape up the 2009 Opel Insignia, just to have the cover blown a few days later by the crew at AutoWeek.nl. Here it is, your future Opel Insignia in all its watermarked glory. Why should you care? This curvy sedan is likely to be the new Saturn Aura sometime down the line. In what seems to be a burgeoning trend, Opel joins the ranks of automakers that are releasing their own versions of professionally shot spy photos to whet the appetites of the motoring press. In this case we have the 2009 Open Insignia (and possibly the future Saturn Aura), which is based on GM's Epsilon-2 global platform. It's been taped up fairly well and, just for laughs, they guide us through the process of taping up a test mule. You clever buggers! More »
