Photos appearing on China Car Times this morning suggest the new Nissan 370Z is not the only product to get a Nismo S-Tune sports package. The 2009 Nissan Versa, known as the Tiida in China, is seen here sporting NISMO colors and a badge proclaiming the S-Tune. But rumors are also swirling of a new GT-R variant to be launched in the meantime. Just in case you think the current 3.5L Z-car is a bit down on power, Nissan is said to be slotting the 3.7L V6 from the Infiniti G37 into the next generation replacement for the 350Z. Word is the forthcoming 370Z will now be coming to the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Sources also say that the new Z will be about 4 inches shorter in wheelbase than the current car. At least now we know what all the spy shots were. It's said that the car going to L.A. will be a full-on production model and not a teaser concept. Styling is said to be 'evolutionary' so it will be interesting to see if the Nismo 350Z pictured above was any indication of the styling direction. Big brother GT-R better watch it's back. More »

Nissan and Nissan Motorsports (NISMO) will not be sponsoring or officially participating in any motorsports activities in North American on the verge of bringing over the GT-R, the most ferocious sports car from Nissan ever for North America. Earlier in the day we reported on a rumor that Nissan was getting out of American motorsports and we now have confirmation from Nissan. According to Scott Vazin, Director of Product Communications for Nissan Motor Company, though they're getting out for [Fiscal Year] 2008, "we'll keep a presence around the world." More »

We've heard from a little birdie that a new accountant at Nissan has determined that NISMO North America/Nissan Racing North America is too expensive and must end. That means no more Nissan-backed CORR, Grand-Am or Drifting teams. The announcement was apparently made internally a week ago so that teams can find new manufacturers. Amid all the talk on Nissan's Porsche-baiting GT-R hitting pavements this year, Nissan's racing arm NISMO quietly revealed the racetrack model. It's the GT-R NISMO's readying to compete in the racing series formerly known as JGTC; that is, Japan's "Super GT Championship" series, in the top GT500 class. And by reveal, we mean there's nary a stitch of spec information forthcoming. For that, they say, we'll have to wait until February 2008. The GT-R replaces the Fairlady Z (350Z) in competition, which had replaced the Skyline GTR. We're assuming the racing GT-R will have the maximum allowable 500 horsepower, though rumors of an even more sprightly street GT-R continue to fly. More »

As car legends go, few have had their flames as passionately fanned as the Nissan Skyline. Despite extensive research proving only seven Americans have seen one on the street, and four have actually driven the mythical machine, it's astounding how often its tale is told. We're reminded of a particular Jonathan Gold restaurant review, in which he tells of intercepting scratchy CB conversations between truckers about a taqueria hidden somewhere in East Los Angeles. It's allegedly home to the world's most perfect torta. Gold never reveals if he found the mythic Mexican sandwich, or if the restaurant is anything more than a Hoffa-like figment of Teamster lore. And I'm glad. The reality could never hold up. That, in a nutshell, sums up my feelings vis-a-vis Nissan's decision to bring its Skyline replacement to America. The get here already upcoming GT-R may whip a Porsche Turbo's ass around the 'Ring, but in time, we'll learn its flaws. Luckily, previous-generation Skylines remain automotive apocrypha to us Yanks, forever shrouded in imagination and painful thumb blisters. We swung by the Nissan booth for another look at the Nismo 350Z's plastic fantastic add ons and various motorsporting sundries. But c'mon, aesthetes, it's all functional, says Nissan. Nissan's kicking out its in-house tuner 350Z, the 2007 Nissan NISMO 350Z, at the New York auto show next week. The Nissan Motorsports tweak job includes a body kit, Brembo speed-reduction clamps and a handling package. It'll come with six-speed only (sorry, mom) and will go on sale in July '07. If it looks familiar, it's because NISMO is basing the package on its Super GT championship Z. Think of it as Japan's answer to Le Mans GT1.
