The company announced it was bringing 17 custom cars and tuner models, including two takes on the CX-7 crossover set to debut in Japan this month, dubbed the "Bright Stylish Concept" (above, based on the North American model already in production) and the "CX-7 Mazdaspeed Concept," a performance-oriented version of the rake-windshield, chop-top SUV. The new MX-5 resembles a lightweight power lifter — tiny but bulgy, with flared wheel arches rising out of the hood and the trunk, aggressive swells around the headlights and dual pipes poking out of a chiseled, muscular derriere. Even with all that metallic beef, a strategically placed Honda Civic can easily obscure the MX-5. Despite 77 extra pounds of hardtop, this welterweight, in pre-production trim, is just 2,575 lbs. If you're in the UK, check out Westfield's MX5. The company took the running gear from a used last-gen Mazda and added its own kit body and components to create a kind of, well, Mazderham. But there's a twist to the story. Considering the UK's new "End of Life Vehicle regulations" (an environmental law that requires manufactures to pitch in to recycle old, valueless cars) the company is actually promoting environmental sensitivity. Kit-car building on old platforms, they say, is a form of recycling. We're not sure it'll wash over at Greenpeace, but it sounds like a good enough idea to us. More »

Using technology first developed for the origami industry, the company's engineers figured out a way to fit the roof — which Mazda says is the fastest in production (12 seconds from top to not) — into the same space as the softtop model's cloth top. Doing so, they've preserved trunk space, but added 66 pounds (the weight kind) to the package — which required additional suspension tuning to offset. The production model will be in dealerships by Spring '07. More »

Brit Authority Rules Against Mazda Ad]]> The fervor with which Brits protect the commons gives us a warm feeling in our various bits, but we get ornery when they cut too close to our purview. For instance, a UK watchdog group is upholding a complaint against a Mazda print ad for what they feel is a reckless usage of blurring effects and text promoting dangerous driving. We'll let the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) explain themselves:
The ASA considered that the claims "PLEASE REMOVE ALL LOOSE CHANGE", "Hold on tight", "added exhilaration" and "NOW THAT'S ZOOM-ZOOM", together with the image of a moving car against a blurred background, made speed the predominant message of the ad. We concluded that the ad was irresponsible and encouraged fast, aggressive driving and asked Mazda to amend it. We asked them to seek help from the CAP Copy Advice team when devising similar campaigns. The ad breached CAP Code clauses 2.2 (Social responsibility), 10.1 (Safety), 48.1, 48.2 and 48.3 (Motoring).
(CAP Copy Advice team? Mr. Orwell, call the front desk.) Mazda pointed out the ad was meant to convey a sensation similar to that a driver would experience in a roadster designed to be fun to drive, but was slapped down by the schoolmarms that be. Word is the new version — to be known in the states as the Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Power Retractable Hard Top, or MMMPRHT — will cost $2,000 to $3,000 over the base MX-5's price tag and have little available trunk space. No word yet on the weight liability. More »
