The re-styled Nissan Murano also bowed at the auto show this week, though it was slightly overshadowed by its world eating cousin. The new Murano has styling that we're told "imparts a "modern art" feel, but still maintains its "Murano-ness." Are they saying it like that's a good thing? The new Murano gets its motivation from a revised version of everyone's favorite 3.5L VQ V6, this time putting out 265 horsepower and connected to a new Xtronic CVT transmission. The theme of this new car is "mobile suite," and therefore gets all the electronic gadgets Nissan could fit into the D Platform including a push button ignition, rearview monitor, iPod connectivity, 9-inch screen with DVD, 11-speaker Bose audio system, GPS navigation and a 9.3GB HD for music. Tired of that turnip-topped Nissan Murano? Street spies have good news, at least if you consider an SUV covered in electrical tape good news. It's the next-generation Nissan Murano, and it's out testing in the adder-infested lands of Southern Europe. Those who think they know say the next Murano is coming out later next year as a 2009 model, with more power and a less turnip-y shape that's sure to please or alienate folks jaded by the crossover boom. Nissan's sent along pics of the juiced-up Murano concept it plans to unveil this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The company tuner was created largely by the lab-coated tweakers at Nissan's Bedfordshire-based European Technical Centre, who've added a Garrett-built turbocharger to the standard 3.5-liter V6 to give it 335 horsepower (340 metric) and 265 ft.-lbs of torque. Acceleration is on the ho-hum side of blistering, at 7.0 seconds from zero to 60 mph, but handling's been improved by way of uprated dampers and stiffer coil springs that lower the Murano's stance by 25mm. It's also got 22" five-spoke alloys under Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ZR tires, and a blown-glass shift knob. Smashing. More »

Nissan's heightening its presence on the royal grounds of Britain's (jolly) Goodwood Festival of Speed this year, unveiling a couple of juiced-up concept cars based on two current models. The Murano GT-C (pictured) will be powered by a 350 ps (345 hp) twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 — worked up by the company's tech center in Bedfordshire — and be delightfully outfitted with some yet-unnamed interior and exterior tweaks. Headlining the event, however, will be Nissan's 380 ps (374 hp) supercharged 350Z GT-S concept. That car will also get better brakes and suspension, a body kit and 18" wheels. Nissan has issued a recall of its adult- contemporary SUV, the Murano, due to a possible alternator defect. Approximately 140,000 Muranos from model-years 2003-2005 in the US and Canada are affected by the callback. According to the NHTSA, a wire could break inside the alternator, preventing the battery from charging and could cause a crash. (NHTSA parlance alert: You know the issue is recall-worthy when you see "and could cause a crash" tacked on to an alert.) We once had an alternator short out while on a highway in the middle of the night. It's pretty freaky to lose power and headlights at the same time. Thankfully we were near a town where hungry tow trucks roamed the streets in packs of 50, trained to sniff out the near-empty wallets of lost travelers. Damn you, Long Island. More »
