Renault broke their own 'Ring record this past week when they recorded a very impressive 8:07.79 around the Nordschleife. The time was good enough to make Renault's new Megane RS Trophy the fastest production spec FWD car to ever lap the Nürburgring. While watching the record setting lap we had to keep reminding ourselves the car in question was only a 265 horsepower FWD Renault and not a vehicle significantly more powerful or significantly more RWD. Meet the latest in a long line of terrifying mid-engined French hot-hatches, the Renault Megane Trophy. The Trophy, revealed today at the Paris Motor Show, is just like the new 2009 Renault Megane, but completely different. The French unquestionably know how to make a great hot hatch, but if there's one thing they do even better it's taking those little cars and sticking a big engine where the back seat is supposed to go. Inside, you'll find a 3.5-liter Nissan-sourced V6 tuned to churn out 360 HP. That power is sent to the rear wheels via a paddle-shift sequential gearbox, resulting in performance that Renault claims is on par with the Porsche 911 GT3. Renault has released official pictures and information of the 2009 Renault Megane, set to debut at this year's Paris Motor Show, thus assuring that no more French car magazines will be shut down for publishing photos of the new hatch. The company plans to release six different versions of the Megane by 2010, including a range of environmentally friendly diesel options that come in below the 120g/km C02 mark. Photos of the 2009 Renault Megane III hatchback have leaked out thanks to km77.com, which has released a treasure trove of press shots of the car. Compared to the current generation car, the new Megane has more traditional proportions and a nose inspired by the Renault Laguna Coupe. Though it still looks a little French, the sedan has a less-dramatic profile that is more reminiscent of the Mazda3 and Fiat Bravo. More »

Recently unveiled at the 2008 British Motor Show, the Renault Megane R26.R was proclaimed the fastest front-wheel-drive production car to lap the Nurburgring. Now, Renault is backing up their claims of an 8:17 lap with this video of the French hot hatch buzzing around the famed German circuit. It may not be as quick as the Corvette ZR1's 7:26 lap, but considering the 'Vette has over 400HP more than the Megane's 230 HP four-banger, we're throughly impressed by the little Renault. More »

If Nissan needs a million-dollar idea, they can take this one: Rebadge the special-edition M gane Renaultsport 225 F1 — which debuted at the Autosport International show in the UK last week — as a Nissan premium sports hatchback and take on the Audi A3 and VW GTI in the US. It might involve some shuffling of production facilities, number crunching and various federalization hassles, but they'd be guaranteed a minimum of 5,000 sales a year. (Well, maybe it's not worth it after all — damn you, P&L!) Still, you can get one in the UK — equipped with Brembo front stoppers, ESP and track-ready dampers and springs; 18-inch alloys and Dunlop tires; Recaro front seats, and special badging — for around 19,500.
