Joining the "we're faster than you and we can prove it in a completely unscientific way by racing around the same racetrack in a production car under various conditions and providing our own timing" club is the Maserati MC12, which now claims they've made the fastest production lap around the Nürburgring of 7:24.29, besting the feuding claims of Porsche and Nissan, which claim 7:34 and 7:29, respectively, for the 911 GT2 and Nissan GT-R, respectively. If you've got Krugerrands enough to give King Midas a case of the wobblies, and you want a GT1 racecar to take shopping, call Edo Competition. Never one to shrink from a high-buck project, Edo created a tuner version of the Maserati MC12 Corsa. That's the $1.7 million, track-only version of Maserati's Enzo-based halo GT car built for homologation's sake, the lightweight Maserati MC12 Corsa. Edo's futzed with the suspension, exhaust and braking systems, applied a new tire and wheel package, and says it's getting approval for its Corsa to be street legal. Sure it'll be awesome, as such reckless disregard for convention sometimes is, though Maserati purists will likely tape pictures of the Halloween-orange racer to their dart boards. More »

Actually, Edo's tuner proves what can be done when money is no object, which is to say a race-ready weekend sports car that's impractical for anything but being flogged on the Hockenheimring. Maserati's answer to the Ferrari Enzo Fxx, the MC12 Corse rolled into the sunlight for the first time at the Bologna auto show yesterday. The severely limited-edition model is based on the MC12 GT1 racer, which took the Spa 24 Hours in 2005 and 2006 and several FIA titles in both years. The Corse model gets a major boost in horsepower over the base model, to 755 hp, from a mere 600 in the MC12. And while its racer cousin gets a manual sequential gearbox, the Corse gets Maserati's electro-hydraulic Cambiocorsa (as well as a passenger seat). The price is the same in all markets, the company says, — that is 1,000,000 Euros (around $1.3 million). It'll be available (that's a relative term, of course) starting in December 2006, ahead of Wall Street's holiday bonus season in early 2007, followed by All Hoonage Eve, which takes place in Westport, Connecticut around April. – Mike Spinelli More »

The Enzo's big, less-prestigious brother was spotted on a Canadian road by reader Jon. He comments, "Saw this MC12 on the highway in between Toronto and Barrie (HWY 400). One of the Gawkerettes, much to our considerable and unrelenting jealousy, spent Sunday in Monaco checking out the Grand Prix (go, go Alonso) from a yacht in the Mediterranean. While there, she (by the grace of Bill the parking attendant) captured a shot of the just-revealed Maserati MC12 Corsa — the track-only, limited-edition version of the Enzo-based MC12 — as it sat waiting for, well, we're not exactly sure what. Loyal Maserati owners stood by and watched as loyal (and super-rich) Ferrari customers ponied up their Amex Centurion cards for one of a few special Enzo Fxx models. Considering the Maserati MC12 is based on the Enzo, it'd seem logical that the Prancing Horse's bretheren would get a similar limited-edition ultra-supercar. That day is nigh. It's the MC12 Corsa, and it's way beyond exclusive (only 12 will be built). Like the Fxx, the 757-horsepower Corsa won't be street legal, meaning it's merely a $1.2 million toy for track days. Maserati's honoring its 2005 FIA GT Manufacturer's Cup win with a limited-edition version of the GranSport — an homage to the company's $800,000 sports car, the MC12. Set to appear at the Geneva Motor Show, the Maserati GranSport "Sucka" MC Victory gets carbon fiber front and rear spoilers and side skirting that generate more downforce at high speeds, as well as a more direct and precise steering setup, said to edge the coupe's driving characteristics closer to that of the MC12 supercar.
