Mazda has no known intentions to make a Mazda6 Coupe, but that didn't stop a forum fan-boy over at CarSpyShots named Baji192 from rendering his own two-door interpretation of the 2009 Mazda6. Although we've yet to get a chance to drive the Zoomage — we'll be in the driver's seat sometime in mid-June — our friends at Popular Mechanics have spent some time behind the wheel. We have to say we're intrigued to find what the new Mazda6 for 2009 will provide — it's bigger, wider and yes, more uncut than the last one. A garage located in Ontario landed a 2009 Mazda6 and one keen individual busted out the camera phone to show the world. The chitter chatter on the VWVortex message boards, where the shots originally surfaced, suggests it's a press car being readied for what we could assume is a press event or a review. The Euro version of the new Mazda6 will get hotted up with an MPS version at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Of course, the MPS is the rest-of-world version of the US Mazdaspeed moniker, so our pointy little ears perked right up. Nihon Car is reporting the MPS will be sporting a tweaked 2.5 L turbo four pumping out around 280 HP, and as important will include all wheel drive. Mazda today released the first photos of the 2009 Mazda6. Clearly embracing Ford's kinetic design, this new generation sedan looks more like the Ford Mondeo than the previous generation's Mazda6. According to the company, this vehicle will go on sale at the end of summer 2008. How does our version differ from the European Mazda6? First, the North American model is slightly larger than the other version with handing and comfort designed for American road conditions (whatever that means). In addition to the base 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder available in Europe, Americans will be getting a version of the 3.7-liter V6 found in the CX-9. The fourbanger gets a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic while the V6 gets only the six-speed automatic with manual shift. Burlapp claims this is a sketch from Mazda, so we'll go with that for now. Hey, Japan! Welcome to the future, dog! The latest bit of news from overseas is that Mazda Atenza, or more familiarly the Mazda6, has been redesigned and retrofitted with some high-tech goodies, like rear monitoring via radar. When traveling at 37 mph or faster, the system will kick on and begin monitoring the rear of the car. John Simister over at the Independent got his hands on the new Mazda6 on the eve of its launch in the UK and walked away impressed. For those of you who join us in lamenting the lack of Ford Europe products on these shores, he says the car seriously rivals the Mondeo and "feels like an Alfa 159 should, or like a BMW 3 Series would if it were, like the Mazda, front-wheel drive." Pretty high praise, especially when you consider the top-of-the-line model only comes with the 170 horsepower 2.3 liter four-banger as opposed to the 3.5 liter V6 that will be available when the Mazda6 arrives on our shores. Mazda's new-generation, globally oriented Mazda6 may be the closest thing US buyers will get to the high design of Ford Europe, at least until the Taurus gets a makeover. (And even then.) It portrays the company's current attention to an aesthetic theme that pulls from nature, while staying true to a form most feel is the motoring equivalent of boiled root vegetables — the midsize sedan. Chris Doane, one of Brenda Priddy's pride of spy photographers, snapped some shots of two 2008 Mazda6's doing some comparison testing around town. The New Mazda6 appears to be larger by a couple inches, and the front end appears to be getting a grille plunging sharply lower down the center line than the current model. We're told Mazda's "bread and butter" will be running the 6 on both the 3.5L V6, as well as the 180-horsepower 4-cylinder model — and luckily there are shots of both out there for you to ogle at. The writers, chilling out in their landlocked country between Romania and the Ukraine, say they've received an internal e-mail stating the redesigned Mazda6 will debut in September at the 2007 Frankfurt auto show. They say pan-European sales of the new 6, which will share a platform with the Euro Ford Mondeo, will start in mid-November. It may not look too different on the outside, but take heed: This Mazda6 test mule is longer and wider than the current model; the familiar body panels merely obscure the future. The Brenda Priddy bunch caught these shots, which may show Ford's updated CD-3 platform in action. Dubbed CD3-2, the new derivation will form the basis for FoMoCo's next wave of midsized cars, crossovers and SUVs, many of which will be powered by the company's new -generation 3.5-liter V6 — with horsepower in the 240+ range.
