Let's say you're MacGyver, you've turned to a life of crime and need to steal a car. All you have is a shoelace, some tin cans and a nail. Of course you punch a hole in each can, string them together and hook them to the bumper of a car then lie in wait to pounce when the driver gets out to see what's making all that racket as they pull away. As perfect as this plan may be, we suspect it's probably staged since the otherwise clever plan would be thwarted when the would-be victim approaches from behind and sees cans hooked to the car. This is why we're so pleased Mazda's press people provided us with what has to be the most beautiful set of spy photos we've ever seen. They've gone and done it, the new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan has debuted ahead of its formal unveil at the LA Auto Show and it looks like Mazda has gone and finally used a pinch of that Nagare design language. Those bellyachers complaining the US never gets good-looking compact cars will no longer have anything to complain about as the new Mazda3 is a looker by any standard. It also has the goods to back those looks with a 2.0 liter four cylinder with 148 HP and 135 lb-ft of torque and a 2.5 liter four pumped up to 167 HP and 168 lb-ft of torque, both of which are mated to either a five-speed or six-speed manual transmission as well as a five-speed selectable automatic transmission. But whatever, it's now official — the all-new 2010 Mazda3 sedan will debut next month at the LA Auto Show. We've just received some photos from Death Valley of the 2010 Mazda3 undergoing some extreme weather testing, which we hope well temporarily sate the appetites of those excited by the exceptional Mazda3 photoshops. A few details on the car are noticeable despite the heavy camouflaging, including a peak at the lower part of those nose, revealing the Nagare design language also present on the Mazda Kazamai Concept, something we were expecting. Remember yesterday's twin front and rear images of what we had assumed was the concept form for the 2010 Mazda3? Today we get nine full, high resolution walk-around photos of the handsome five door — and they're photoshopped. This amazing work was done by a chopper named Grif-1, and debuted on the Russian design site "Render." Grif-1 used 3D Studio Max and Photoshop CS3 to create a near-perfect execution of the Nagare design language, sprinkling in enough hints from previous concept cars it was easy to believe the car was real.

The enigmatic and strange man who runs the Burlapp Car Page has a couple shots of what he claims is the next Mazda3. While we know we're expecting a new 2010 Mazda3, these shots look more concept than production, so we're assuming that's not what we're seeing here. While not as way-out-there as the 2018 Mazda3 design contest, could these be accurate renderings of what to expect from a concept of the next generation of Mazda's zoom-zoomin' C-segment hatchback? Nary a week goes by where we aren't forced to look at another affordable, crisp-handling, attractive and unattainable European Ford Focus or derivative and recite that all too familiar prayer of "Ford, if you're listening, bring it over here" while trying to get excited about Bill Gates' Focus Coupe. The folks at Mazda Motorsport are bringing their hot hatch to the 2008 race to compete with the hot pink Nissan GT-R. Unlike other rallies, this race features cars that are mostly stock and include all of the electric systems and upholstery that came with the original car. This is all part of the "Mazda Design Challenge," which invited contestants to describe and draw their ideal 2018 Mazda3. What hot hatch do we have here? It's the latest from Mazda, fresh from the Sydney auto show. It's the Mazda3 MPS Extreme, a tweaker version of what we in the states call the Mazdaspeed3. But where the Mazdaspeed produces 263 hp in stock form, this specimen punches the clock with 281 hp and 313 lb-ft of torque from the same 2.3-liter DISI four. That by way of a slight hack of the ECU and sport exhaust. Now, before your heart thumps out of your chest with glee, please note the lesser Mazdaspeed is already a might unwieldy off the line. In fact, finding traction at full-bore is cartoonishly tricky (think Fred Flintstone's feet). Still, once underway, it's a hoot plus one. And considering new running gear from Australian motorsports supplier Coote, fitted to keep matters groundward, this version's likely a few notches upward. How long is that Quantas flight again? Mazda's turning to Facebook to find new design talent as part of the Mazda Design Challenge. Contestants have to submit a 150-word description of their vision of the 2018 Mazda3, and an optional sketch. My best friend and his wife just had their first baby. Little Ari is healthy, adorable and hasn't even bothered to barf on me yet. Anyhow, currently they are a single car family and that car is an old 2-door Ford Explorer. Naturally, new mommy insanity concern has wifey pants thinking differently about all that rollover stuff she used to let go through one ear and out the other. Plus, the baby seat doesn't anchor properly in the Ford. As a result of me existing in the form of who I am, I was asked to help them buy a new car. Here are the parameters. Must be about $16,000, SAFE, decent on gas and not too large. I immediately said, "Subaru Impreza! Or, maybe a Mazda3." But, I am realized that I am a pretty biased dude. Its name is a mashup of the Japanese words for leaf and wind, and its styling evokes the movement of sand on a shoreline — says its creators. But the Mazda Hakaze is no zen gardener's weekend project. It's the latest in Mazda's Nagare ("flow") concepts, whose designs draw from natural influences (see also Nagare and Ryuga). Designed at Mazda's European Design Center in Frankfurt, the Hakaze is a crossover SUV with a removable top, about the same size as a Mazda3 and powered by that car's 2.3-liter DISI four. Here's one from the how'd-they-figure-that-out file. It seems a number of Mazda 3 owners in Canada have reported being victims of a super-secret way to get into their cars. Apparently, if you put a large enough dent in the side of a Mazda3, it unlatches the door and fools the computer into thinking the entry's legit. Thus, sledgehammer-wielding thieves have been relieving car owners of their possessions with relative ease. According to a Mazda source, the company's known about the problem since last October, and is working up countermeasures. In the meantime, don't believe that guy in a leopard loincloth and handlebar mustache lurking around the parking lot with a giant mallet. He may be up to no good. Our digicam somehow failed to translate the new Mazda MPS (that's the Mazdaspeed3 to us Yankers) into anything recognizable by the human eye, so for visuals we turn to the guys at World Car Fans, who've never met a car they didn't post. As expected, the new flagship of the Mazda3 line will be a front driver powered by the company's MZR 2.3L DISI turbo mill, producing 247 hp. Considering this is about the best sports-minded economy car the US will get out of Ford, at least until (if?) the Focus ST finds its way abroad, we're going to go ahead and get excited.
