The McLaren SLR always leaves us scratching our heads. The thundering V8 is brilliantly finessed by McLaren so as to attract only the highest-end of horsepower-happy hoon. However, it's just too pretty. The engine's wrapped up in a package that screams for the depths of the celebrity elite — the oil barons, soccer stars, "gangsta" moguls and Gumballers of the world — to buy it and have their way with it. And by that we mean everything from showing off your "no-no spot," having difficulty entering and exiting, DUIs and of course, smacking into the rear (or front) bumper of a late-model Honda Civic. But for the privileged lowest of the low, the tuning shop of Mansory has put together an attempt to "Save The SLR" by making a version of the McLaren-mobile sure to be unwanted by even the most privileged of douches-with-privilege. If you're worried that the sultry Aston Martin DBS has rendered your DB9 passé, maybe a jaunt to the German tuner Mansory is in order. Their latest super-duper upgrade package makes the already shockingly gorgeous DB9 even more ridiculously alluring. The company adds carbon fiber and alcantara, milled 20" wheels, a revised front fascia and side skirts, a set of Brembo brakes and dashes of tasteful chrome. Actually, we really like the black wheels, but they should have stopped there. Adding chintzy fog lights, cheesy exhausts and tacky body addenda only serve to reduce the appeal of one of the classiest cars ever made. In addition to the usual boy racer bolt ons, Mansory added a strut brace, 6-piston Brembo brakes and firmer springs, which we guess would be ok too. More »

Volkswagen Audi Group can feel a bit slighted not to be the first port of call on the Essen show, but even a four-wheel drive, 300 hp battle wagon can't make a huge impression in this company. Still, the Passat R36 is a serious piece of kit in its own right, and should be an enticing alternative for those who want the performance but not the price premium that goes with Audi S4 ownership. It's a near-perfect Q car, especially in Touring form. Only the deep airdams, dinner-plate brake discs and mildly revised aero kit give away the violence held within. There are faster cars in the world, but no faster VW, this one will hit 60mph in 5.6s and go on to the standard 155mph top end. More »
