Who says the Germans are always hung up on Bruce? Sure, the press release we just received from German tuning house Irmscher says "Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail" at the bottom; but the body of the message has an entirely different tone. Forget the standard weaksauce Ecotec 4-pot; it seems the German hordes have realized they coulda had a V8 in their Opel GT. So Irmscher is releasing their version of the wee little roadster made off the same assembly line as our Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice with a 480 PS (473 HP) 6.0-liter V8 of unspecified origin. We're sure the German Green Party will totally be happy. Full press release with all the hilarious German-English translation errors — like "V8 Power to be enjoyed" — after the jump. We're just going to sit here and dream of a V8 crammed between the rails of a Saturn Sky. Don't mind us. More »

Ever since Maximum Bob took the wraps off his Solstice gearheads nationwide, as they are wont to do, have been dreaming about shoving a V8 under the bonnet. Of course the fact that the right wheel drive Solstice is built off the C6's frame rails might have had something to do with that. Mallet Cars, Ltd. was the first to pull off this trick on a wide scale when they released their LS2 Solstice. Right, they crammed a 6.0-liter LS2 engine in the kinda small Solstice. They even got an LS7 engine to fit, but apparently you had to replace the rear tires every 500 miles. Iif you pay attention to the tuner world long enough you will learn one very important maxim: absolutely bonkers is never enough. With that in mind, Mallett is offering up the Pitbull Solstice. More »

We heard a rumor from somebody that Chuck Mallett was going to premiere an absolutely obscene GM Kappa-platform vehicle at SEMA. (Okay, we heard it from Chuck himself.) This isn't it. What it is is Stainless Steel Brakes' Michael Jonas' LS2-powered Solstice, fresh from Mallett's shop. With a claimed 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, a shorty wheelbase, and a couple of hundred pounds over the front axle that weren't there when it was Ecotec equipped, Jonas comments, "It's a real handful to drive with all this power on such a short wheelbase. This car definitely isn't for the faint of heart." Knowing what we know, we're positively terrified at the prospect of what caliber of weapon Chuck'll be hauling out to Vegas. More »

Pretty much anyone into late-model GM performance cars knows who Chuck Mallett is. Those people also know that Chuck builds random and radical development models to push technology as far as it can go. And then he pushes beyond that, with occasionally humorous results. This C6 was no different. Having had no problems with the stock 'Vette fuel tanks, Chuck utilized them in his massively-turboed, 400-inch Corvette. 900hp? No probalo, right? Click through for the probalos. More »

Sure, the Pontiac Solstice is an attractive roadster in bone-stock trim (um, where the heck its it already?), but its Miata-fighting Ecotec powertrain leaves us a little, er, clammy. That's why when we heard the boys at GM aftermarket juicer Mallett Cars was putting an LS2 into Pontiac's two-seater, we did a little victory dance (on the inside). The Mallett Solstice V8 made its debut at SEMA, and now it's on the cover of this week's print AutoWeek. According to AW, the Mallettization, which includes, at base, a 400hp Corvette mill, a Luk Gold clutch and short-throw shifter, Mallett-Penske shocks and performance-grade brakes, makes for "one monstrously fast little roadster." The base kit adds $18,000 to the price of the roadster (around $20,000), but a top-line package includes a supercharger (600hp total!), six-speed Tremec tranny, 19" alloys, a worked-over suspension and other goodies for an extra $39,000. It's a lot, but then, it's far less than the lukewarm BMW Z8 it resembles. Now, if Pontiac would go ahead and deliver the thing... More »

Jalopnik has obtained Chuck and Lance Mallett's Christmas list for the Pontiac Solstice. You may know the Mallett boys from their blisteringly fast Corvettes and CTS-Vs, but prepare to love them a little more as they now offer an LS2 conversion for the small roadster.
