We kinda sorta wish the shot that had leaked of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu had been the back end instead of the front end, because the mid-size has a seriously nice Camaro-esque ass. From the C-pillar back, this car just screams Chevelle. Take a look yourself by walking through the gallery of official press photos up top. More »

Although the embargo on the 2013 Chevy Malibu doesn't lift until Monday night's Shanghai and pre-New York Auto Show web reveal, there's more shots leaking out of the General's sieve-like media site. The latest — of a blue 'bu's uninspiring smiling face — gets the Shanghai skyline in the background. A reader over at the Burlapp Car Page snapped a photo of a completely unmasked 2009 Audi Q5 in Malibu basking in the warm glow of the brilliant Pacific sun. We assume this is an early tester out measuring how many and what kind of Jamba Juice containers will fit in the cupholders. Though the Audi Q5 leans a bit heavy on the jellybean looks, when it lands in America it should be motivated by a turbocharged inline-four mated to the twin-clutch 7-speed steptronic transmission out of the 2009 Audi A4, allowing it to run circles around your neighbors Lexus RX. We're mighty pleased with the vast quantities of DOTS Bonus shots from our readers these days, and some readers are going the extra mile and shooting multiple cars found street-parked in their towns. We saw Warpig's Oslo-O-Rama last week, and now it's NiceNurseRatched's turn. NiceNurseRatched lives in Tampa and she's photographed a bunch of Florida-style cool machinery, ranging from a Nash Ambassador to a Mercedes-Benz 600. Make the jump for the full <del>146</del> 50-shot gallery. More »

Sure, the 2008 Chevy Malibu's selling better than the last model, but it's still an orgasm of mid-size mediocrity like everything else in the class of cars that include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Ford Fusion. Sure, the Nissan Maxima may be somewhat sporty, but nobody's going to confuse it with a GT-R anytime soon. But, it looks as though the latest car-star to hit the big screen in the next Transformers movie's going to be none other than the General's budget brand's middling mediocregasm. True, this Malibu's decked out in all sorts of fancy Chinese characters, so we're expecting it to play less of a transforming role and more of a background role as Transformers 2 begins filming in Bethlehem, PA. But whatever, let's not take too much away from this be-stickered new Malibu. We're sure he's already feeling envious of his Chevy brother picking up all that hot robogasmic action, no sense in beating his already battered self-esteem any further. One more shot of the not-so-much-transforming 2008 Chevrolet Malibu after the jump. More »

Last October, the highest-placed Detroit car at the 24 Hours of LeMons Altamont race was the Spirit of San Diego '81 Chevy Malibu, grabbing a not-too-shabby 20th place. This time around, minus the fins and plus some mean-looking black paint, a good ol' American V8/rear-drive machine has left all them furrin cars (save one) eating Detroit exhaust, as the Chevrolet drivers finished a mere three laps behind the #1 car. We're not sure what they changed (though the Malibu does appear to have wider, lower-profile rubber now), but it sure worked! By the way, I'm still working on the traditional Top 50 Cars and Über Gallery LeMons posts; you'll get 'em soon. More »

We saw the Chuck D-centric Olds 98 in Toronto a couple weeks back, and now the Canadian contingent is back with a whole bunch of seriously rare machines for our enjoyment. Donkeyassman has spotted a Lotus Europa, Lotus Elan, Chevy Chevelle, Mazda Eunos, and a pair of Honda Beats in the city of Burnaby, B.C. So put on your tuques and make the jump for many more photos and Donkeyassman's description. More »

The General's German brand saw the sign it needed to replace the aged Vectra, so they opened up their eyes — and came up with this — the new 2009 Opel Insignia. It's a new name, a new car and yes, a new badge for the brand preciously misspelled from the name of a gem and it's being revealed in July at the London Motor Show. We're guessing Opel decided to drop this load of shots and details early due to, you know, all the leakage everywhere — both manufactured, silly and otherwise. This new Vectra-replacing four-door will hit the market with a pickup truck-like selection of engine options and powertrains. Buyers of the new Insignia will be able to choose from seven different engines — four gasoline engines ranging from a four-banger 115 HP unit to a V6 with an output of 260 horses and three new direct-injection diesels displacing 2.0 liters and with outputs spanning from 110 to 160 HP. And when you're done choosing your <s>boring</s> engines, you'll have a choice between either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. What else would we expect from a four-door that's 7.9 inches longer than the current Vectra and is built on the General's new globe-spanning Epsilon II platform. Of course we'd expect a variety of available options — this sculpted boat's going to need to play the role of like, every car in GM's multi-brand lineup. And that's why we should care about this new Euro sedan — because everything else with an Opel badge gets sent state-wide as a Saturn, so we're under the impression we'll be seeing this as the 2011 Saturn Aura. But the platform prostitution doesn't end there — the bones underneath will hold the skin and meat of the 2011 Pontiac G6 and the 2012 Chevy Malibu. Rumor is we'll also see it as the 2010 Buick LaCrosse and the 2010 Saab 9-3. Yes, that means the 2010 LaCrosse would actually get an AWD platform — hmm, maybe there's some life in that old brand. Yeah, right. Full press release after the jump.

Malibu, American Axle's Through With You?

So far the damage from the American Axle strike's been limited to the General's big slow-sellers. Although GM's idled 30 plants, for the most part they've been the trucks and SUV's. Well, except for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant which makes the Buick Lucerne and the Cadillac DTS. Oh, and also the Lordstown, Ohio plant that builds the Pontiac G5 and Chevy Cobalt. But none of those sell really fast off dealer lots anyway — so the strike's been sort of a non-event to this point. But wait, the Detroit News thinks there's trouble brewing down the road for a car that's selling like hotcakes. Well, if hotcakes were cars and spent 18 days under the warming lights of the IHOP before you bought them. More »

We've only seen a couple of Chevelles so far on this series (a '68 coupe and a '69 wagon). Oh, sure, we wouldn't argue with anyone who made the case that the '72 El Camino is technically a Chevelle, but in any case the classic '64-'72 Chevy A-bodies have been scarce here, especially considering how many were made. We'll add one more today, with this 4-door '71. More »

We've all seen the ads for the new Chevy Malibu touting it as GM's long awaited savior, a "super accord" and the ultimate Camry fighter, et cetera. And with a 100% increase in in Malibu sales in December, the advertising campaign might be working. There's only one little problem: there aren't enough Malibus to satisfy demand. And to make things worse, there are lots full of new Accords and Camrys for people who don't want to wait until the spring to get one. More »

For today, I was going to reach into the PCH Mailbag and pull out one of the excellent tips y'all have been sending in, but then it happened: I was walking down Howard Street in San Francisco earlier today and I was thinking about how my Civic is due for a new timing belt, and how I should probably do the job this weekend, and then I started this internal mental debate about timing chains versus belts and that reminded me of my friend Andrew and how he got stranded in the middle of rural Alabama when the timing chain in his '66 Malibu ate all the teeth on the crank sprocket... and then I stopped at the crosswalk and a vintage Malibu drove past: Plate O' Shrimp Moment! So, you see, it goes without saying that we must now have a Repo Man-themed Project Car Hell. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/331141/project-car-hell-repo-man-edition-j-frank-or-bud" title="Click here to read more about Project Car Hell, Repo Man Edition: J. It was a rough November for GM, with the company reporting total sales of 263,654 vehicles, representing a drop of 11% from November 2006. Though this can be partially blamed on a planned reduction in rental fleet sales, the big news is that the General is have a rough time selling trucks, with a 14.9% year-over-year decrease in light trucks/SUV's and a 15.5% in trucks. Hummer stumbled as well, with a 30.5% year-over-year decrease. In the silver lining department, the new CTS has seen a 15% increase in sales and the Chevy Malibu is up 40% compared to last year (pushing overall Chevy car sales up 15%). None of this would have happened if they'd have landed the Knight Rider gig. The full report below the jump: More »

It's the time of the year when everyone and their grandmother hands out a "Best Car Ever...of the Year" award. Just over a week ago Motor Trend named their Car of the Year. We already showed you the Car & Driver top ten for '08 and now Automobile Magazine has released their category-less Automobile All-Stars list. However, Automobile's picks reveal that the 2008 model year might not have been an All-Star year for new cars. Seven of the ten cars are carryovers from last year (or was 2007 just that good?). Click through the jump to find out who the newcomers are and which seven titans kept their titles. More »

The General is very happy to announce that it'll be exporting some of its two-mode Tahoes and Malibu to the Middle East; the Middle East is happy to announce that it doesn't want them and is sending them back (j/k). The Dubai Roads & Transit Authority will be taking possession of the vehicles to use as fleet cars and cabs as part of a test program. The great thing about hybrids is they only slow our dependence on oil in the Middle East, making sure we'll care about them forever. We're actually not being fair to Dubai, which only receives less than 3% of its annual revenues from natural gas and petroleum. The hilarious press release below the jump: More »

The bow-tied folks at the GM Inside News Forums are giddy over a Washington Post chat that featured mild recommendations of the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS4 over the Honda Accord and Infiniti G35. The comments came from the WaPo's Warren Brown and seems to mark a new period in American automotive history, at least from the perspective of forum members. Specifically, in a live chat Brown said "... [T]he (Infiniti) G35 is quite a bargain. But I am more likely to buy the Cadillac CTS4—excellent overal perfrmance, beautiful styling, more my kind of car." Photos of the Malibu and more comments below: More »

Now that pricing for the new Malibu is out, we've just received a missive from the General telling us the 'merican revolution's got a marketing campaign in a pot and cooking for the newly redesigned 2008 Chevy Malibu. The campaign is supposedly going to "prove the Malibu competes with" the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. How's it going to prove that? We've no idea — we haven't seen the creative yet. But we do know it'll supposedly feature the "biggest one-day digital takeover ever by a marketer...with "an unprecedented one-day digital takeover of the leading online portals and automotive, sports and lifestyle Web sites" We'll ignore the whole redundancy of making clear "Web sites" are "digital" and "online" as we wonder whether we'll be considered "leading" enough to get a blast of the 'bu to the face. Since our well-paid ad sales team only talks to us when we go to the bar and we beg them to buy us drinks we guess we'll just have to wait and see with all of you. Full release on the ad campaign for the coconut-flavored car after the jump. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/309745/new-chevy-ad-campaign-to-prove-malibu-competes-with-camry-accord" title="Click here to read more about New Chevy Ad Campaign To "Prove Malibu Competes With Camry, Accord"">More »

As some of you might remember, I like to photograph Little Tree air fresheners in junkyard cars. Not long ago, I was at a local self-service yard located right at the very edge of San Francisco Bay, and the wind was howling cold and lonesome off the water and through the picked-over corpses of the cars. That's when I spotted this 80s Cadillac with a "New Car Smell" Little Tree twisting in the wind. So I had to film it. You'll find one in every car, kid. You'll see. More »

After opening up a real can of worms in the debate over the Rat Rod 356 yesterday, it seems only fair that we should see an evil-looking primermobile that reminds us of a time when men were men and Pabst wasn't an ironic beer choice. Time was, loud-ass GM A-bodies with fat tires and mismatched wheels roamed the streets of Alameda in packs, searching for Mopar B-bodies to take out to City Line for some street-racing action... More »

The Chevy Malibu not only gets a new look, it's getting a new price — one that starts at $19,995 for the base-level LS model and includes a hybrid for the starting price of just $22,790. Along with the bargain-basement model and the light hybrid, the Malibu lineup includes the 1LT and 2LT trim levels and the top-of-the-line LTZ. MSRP for the 1LT is $20,955; 2LT, $22,635 and the LTZ, $26,995. And yes, that includes the destination charge — for those of you counting that. The newly hotted-up 'bu shows up in dealerships in November and expect the $100 million marketing campaign to begin just in time for Thanksgiving. Or the "'Bu" as Bob and his editors over at GM's FastLane blog like to call it. Apparently the General's product main man took the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu out for a spin last weekend, and while limiting himself to just two exclamation points, he's still managed to file a review. Lutz is obviously ebullient about the newest redesign of this particular Chevy mid-size passenger car, and we can appreciate that — because seriously, who'd want to be driving the last iteration for a weekend anyway? Mixing baseball with Chevrolet seems like a good mix, eh? Mixing it with the mild hybrid car named the same as a coconut-flavored rum seems even better. That's right — the General's chosen the MLB All-Star game as the perfect location to release deets and show off the mildly-hybridized Malibu for the very first time. Well, at least since we saw it yesterday. Although a new Chevy Malibu sporting the new-for-2008 re-design is exciting enough — it's also sporting what appears to be a "Hybrid" badge on the side. Did a reader of Josh's little site on the General actually come through with what appears to be shots of a true-blue hybrid car from GM to compete in the same class as the Camry and Accord hybrids?

So it's one thing to take your product and run it head-to-head against the competition in a controlled environment like the Fusion Challenge ads FoMoCo started running a few months ago. In those ads, readers of Road et Track and Car und Driver were given the chance to drive a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and an AWD Ford Fusion through a cone course and then asked to rate which was best in terms of handling and prettiness. In those ads, obvs, the AWD Fusion beat the competition. But that was a controlled environment. I would have doubted any automaker would have the guts to put their competitor's mid-size sedan in the dealership next to their own, much less when their competitor has been the best-selling car for most of the last decade. But that's exactly what Chevy's doing — we're hearing the General's asking dealers to recreate the "Pepsi Challenge" of the 1970's — and drop a Camry into the dealer showroom and place it right up next to their newly redesigned 2008 Chevy Malibu, and let the buyers decide. I have to say, it's a ballsy move and it means one of two things — either the General really thinks the new Malibu can beat the Camry head-to-head, or else they've completely lost their minds. The General better be hoping that focus group data actually says what they think it says. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/263235/chevy-asks-dealers-to-put-toyota-camry-in-showrooms-for-malibu-challenge" title="Click here to read more about Chevy Asks Dealers To Put Toyota Camry In Showrooms For "Malibu Challenge"">More »

The folks over at WorldCarFans have captured some more pics of what they're claiming is the next Opel Vectra, and it's certainly got what looks to be some serious Camry-action going on in the front grille. According to the folks at the site that's for the fan of cars from across the world:
"The next Vectra is sitting on the new Epsilon 2 platform allowing a wider and taller body to provide more space inside for the passengers...an all new car with a completely new styling. Opel will offer for the first time all wheel drive for the new Vectra as an option, and power will come from a wider selection of new engines including a 200 HP 2,7 litre V 6 Turbodiesel and a newly developed 2,8 litre V 8 fuel engines. The Vectra is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn this year and hit the showrooms in early 2008. "
Since it sounds like the Epsilon 2 platform will be used, does this mean we'll be seeing AWD on the 2011 Chevy Malibu? One can only hope the stateside platform-mate of the Vectra will be getting a drivetrain to match the new look we saw in Detroit. – Ray Wert More »
