We've been seeing the properly named and for Europe only (for now) Jeep Cherokee running around metro Detroit for a couple of months in various stages of undress. Yesterday the stars aligned and we chased this totally naked Bosch test mule up I75 to a Meijer parking lot, where, after a few glamour shots, our phone battery crapped out. Weak. In any case Jeep fans, prepare for the gnashing of teeth and the rending of flesh, because this was a six speed, turbodiesel rocking the D's highways and byways. That's just rubbing salt in the wound. Far be it for us lowly bloggers to question the wisdom of the newly reminted Chrysler, but it seems that the off roading community would plotz for an oil burning Cherokee with a six speed manual cog swapper, but what do we know. Well, the new 2008 models for Jeep are almost out — and Chrysler Group's released pricing on the newly re-designed and very much Nitro-like Liberty. They've dropped the base price on the 4x2 SUV letting freedom ring in at an MSRP of just $20,990 — $1,270 less than the 2007 model. The 4x4 on the other hand will start in at $22,600 — $1,170 less than the current model. Now up at the high end, the top of the line "Limited" model will go out the door with the 3.7-liter V6 for just $26,785. Not too shabby a price, but I still ain't buying this re-badged Dodge no matter what price incentives they drop atop it. It's just too — umm — something for me. Full press release after the jump. I'm in shock — it's like they took the Dodge Nitro and slapped a Jeep grille on it. I know that I'm the first person to scream from the mountains how much I love my little Liberty, but after seeing this, I think I just vomited in my mouth a little. I'm sorry, I'm going to need to spend some time alone here and mourn my cute little bug (ask Lieberman about that one) — although the cloth roof looks kinda cool. We'll need to think about this one. Reports of fires breaking out have Chrysler ready to send out letters to 2006 and 2007 Dodge Durango and Jeep Liberty owners. A faulty blower motor is the cause of the conflagrations, which evidently occur when the air conditioning is used during hot weather. Notices will go out to Durango owners in April and Liberty Owners in May. A third and much less flammable recall for Dodge Avenger door latch mechanisms will be issued as soon as Chrysler gathers enough of the replacement parts to make the repair. Over 489,000 vehicles are affected. So far the Durango is ahead in the burnout contest, with 66 reported fires versus only 16 for the Liberty. – Mike Bumbeck More »

We've just heard the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's recalling 62,369 vehicles for what Reuters says is a need to "reprogram a computer that is related to the brake system." And it's a lot of models affected: the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV's. Our boys at the site that's all mopar, all the time have posted pics of what they're claiming is the newly redesigned 2008 Jeep Liberty. And the pictures, I must say, have my heart all aflutter. It looks as though, if these shots are to be believed, the folks at the German-American hybrid have gone all Cherokee/Commander on the front end of Jeep's little Lib — eschewing the bubble-face and bubble-butt of past iterations of the made-for-off-road SUV. True, it'll probably still get horrid gas mileage, but if this little Jeep keeps looking this fine, you totally know I'll be looking to snag one when the lease on the current ol' and busted comes up in two years. – Ray Wert More »

We guess we shouldn't be too surprised because as we were once told, after an overanxious valet locked the RFID key fob in the trunk of the Corvette it belonged to, that "there's only about fifty or so combinations between the keys and this specific vehicle." Plus, given Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler once had a "sharing is caring" relationship, we're under the assumption that maybe our fob shared some kind of doohickey or something with the Montero sitting next to our car. Well looky here. It appears Jeep's next Liberty will be heavily influenced by the squarocity of its Dodge Nitro cousin. The spy photogs at KPG, who snapped the shots, have deduced this tester is indeed a Jeep product and not the soon-for-sale Nitro. It's obvious that if this is the Liberty, it'll at least share considerable visual similarities with the Jeep Commander SUV. KPG's shooters say the facelift includes a larger windshield and revised roof pillars, meaning the Jeep shares few, if any, body panels with the Dodge. Either way, we're sure when Wert's lease is up he'll be on this little bastard like a metrosexual on Clinique for Him. More »

A couple of years back, we remember just narrowly missing being included in a ball-joint-related recall for the last-generation Dodge Durango. Now Wert's up on the recall block; in September he'll served notice that his '02-'06 Jeep Liberty may have a ball joint problem which has already caused three injuries and prompted 111 complaints. 832,000 vehicles are affected. Despite having doubled its original sales target, Jeep's Liberty CRD will soon be gone like Flynn (well, times change). Blame it on stricter emissions standards going into effect on 2007 that'll render its VM Motori-built 2.8-liter four unusable in the US market. Considering the company just announced its Grand Cherokee will be fitted with a common-rail diesel mill from DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes stable, the Liberty move doesn't mean the company's diesel experiment failed.
