First we have an ad packed with screaming engines and spraying champagne, with Subaru doing some heavy boasting about three Legacies driving a collective 100,000 kilometers in 19 days at the FIA track in Arizona and competing in the '90 WRC. But what about car buyers who shudder in horror at the idea of driving fast? Rubbing our faces in the fact that we don't even get the Subaru Legacy STI, the folks at Subie are going out and adding a limited edition S402 to the Japanese lineup. Planned for — get this — only 402 units, the S402 features a slightly detuned version of the turbo'd 2.5 liter boxer good for 285 HP and 292 lb.ft. of toque. Other upgrades include include two piece Brembos, various garish badging, "sport" suspension and revised steering ratio, fancy seating, some BBS wheels wrapped in Potenzas (which we think are over rated) and some body tweaks. What would Maximum Wagon Day be without a wagon battle? And nobody does track battles better than Best Motoring. This classic clip showcases two JDM wagons for the Japanese family that's really on-the-go; a Subaru Legacy GT-B and Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 circa 1996. It's too bad they didn't include a Nissan Stagea, but even these two haulers are entertainment enough. Both have twin-turbos, AWD, a 5spd manual 'box, and more interior room than some Tokyo sleeping pods. As if the STI-grade hood scoop and fender flares weren't enough to get Scoobieheads muttering, this Legacy GT spotted on the 91 in So Cal is wearing a set of asymmetrical five-spoke rims. Or is that a Photoshop job? That's the debate going on at the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club. The spotter also says the hood and front bumper were covered in metal sheeting and tape, and that computers and monitoring equipment were visible inside. Subaru, flush with the success of a first-time 200,000-units-sold year in the United States, introduced the new "Flying Wing" front end design on the Legacy and Outback, a look which will eventually replace the unloved Flying Vagina grille across the line, we imagine. The Subies claim that that the new grille design reflects the company's past life as the Nakajima Aircraft Company, although as far as we know, the Ki-84 Hayate fighter's "Special Attack Painting" color scheme is not available. With Subaru giving SEMA attendees an eyeful of what a Forester STI might look like, we're curious. Is the company just teasing, or are they planning something similar for production? Brace yourselves, Scoobieheads; according to AutoWeek it's the latter. AW reports Subaru is considering STI versions of both the Forester and Legacy models. The company's vice president of product planning, Tomohiro Ishitobi, revealed that brass feels the market is ready for more performance-oriented cars, and that a Legacy STI is on their "wish list." As Subaru reps said at the New York auto show last April, the company is launching its SI-Drive system for the 2007 model year. The system's three-position knob lets drivers adjust engine performance for driving needs and conditions — from economical to sporty. Driving modes include "Sport Sharp," which delivers the bulk of torque up front, "Intelligent," which heightens fuel efficiency, and "a-hole," which makes the car to reach every toll booth first, come hell or merging traffic. Subaru confirmed yesterday it would include the system in premium models of its 2007 Legacy (Liberty in Australia) and Outback models, which will be available to interested knob twiddlers starting September 1, 2006. In addition to buying 8.7 percent of GM's former share in Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries — becoming its top shareholder — Toyota and Subaru are becoming friends with benefits, according to Asahi. A new strategic alliance between the companies will focus on three areas: manufacturing, start-up of production lines and development. Plans could include joint development of some passenger cars, building Toyotas at a US-based Fuji plant and use of Fuji engineers in Toyota's global strategy. Fuji is also abandoning plans to build some components for its upcoming Legacy hybrid, and will instead buy them from Toyota. Unlike in Japan, where Subaru's Legacy GT spec.B is a barn-burner of a sports sedan, the US model will be more of a loaded-to-the-headliner touring carriage. Subaru announced the MSRP of its 2006 2.5 GT spec.B will be $34,620 — including a 2.5-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, producing 250hp and 250 lbs-ft. of torque, hooked to a five-speed manual transmission. It comes with lots of toys — including Bilstein shocks and a nav system — making it a car for dads who commute to work on winding secondary roads, and who'd rather be dipped in giant martini glass and burned alive by mid-career investment bankers than drive a German sedan. Subaru has launched a version of its Legacy 2.5 GT spec.B performance sedan in the US. Subaru watchers will lament it won't have the same 276hp, 2.0-liter rally-inspired motor as the coveted Japanese model; US buyers will have to be satisfied with the same 250 hp turbocharged-intercooled Boxer engine in the Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Sedan. But Subaru is attempting to coax them back from the ledge with a mess of toys. The US spec.b will get extensive suspension upgrades, 18" wheels wrapped in low-profile tires, a sufficiently tarted-up interior with Momo steering wheel, and will be sold exclusively with five-speed manual transmission. Edmunds Inside Line has some video footage of Subaru's special-edition Spec B Legacy GT during road testing in the US. Apparently, Subaru is bringing the Spec B Legacy — which could sport a 276-hp single-turbo / intercooled 2.0-liter flat-four, if not the 2.5-liter mill used in current US-spec GTs — stateside. (Sport Compact Car test-drove the Japan-spec model last year.) The Japanese Spec B gets the smaller, rally-inspired 2.0-liter, with a specially designed exhaust manifold and twin-spool turbo to increase low-end torque. Cosmetically, a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, like that in the WRX STi, and an interior trim package will conspire to give it the Spec B vibe, and tiptronic-style, steering-wheel-mounted shift selectors will likely allow for track-style up- and downshifts.
