We've gotta apologize...we were a bit drunk this afternoon and may have missed this at first, but after sobering up and taking a closer look at the sales numbers...plus a thoughtful kick in the ass...we were finally able to notice this: More »

The trifecta of automakers from the land of the rising sun each threw down their respective gauntlets today, or in Nissan's case a snow glove. That's because although Toyota and Honda showed upward ticks on year-to-year sales, (16.2% and 10.2%) Nissan just couldn't get the job done to make it a three-way of higher sales. Nissan dropped 16% in July and sold a mere 86,221 vehicles during July. Well, look on the bright side Ghosn, at least now you and GM are looking more alike! <a href="http://jalopnik.com/191351/breaking-the-japanese-can-sell-toyota-sales-up-162-honda-sales-up-102-nissans-sorta-french-and-down-16" title="Click here to read more about Breaking! Since GM got off pretty easy, beating analyst expectations and only dropping 19.5%, there's a clear winner when it comes to Big Three sales figures. But...both DaimlerChrysler and FoMoCo had some pretty piss-poor sales numbers in July — both down 34% in overall sales for the month. With that type of a photo finish, we need a poll to settle this fair and square...like a game of rock, paper and scissors...but less scientific. More »

Anyone who voted "C" in the poll earlier...guess what? Y'all won. Despite a headline reading "GM Delivers 410,332 Vehicles; Best Retail Month Of 2006", the numbers don't really back up the excitement inherent in such a headline. Reading through the press release, we found the excitement to be a bit...err...unfounded. You see, although it took us a bit, we did find the year-to-year sales somewhere around paragraph 12...and to get to that number in addition to the headline, we had to sift through things like: <a href="http://jalopnik.com/191308/breaking-gm-july-sales-down-195-obfuscation-wins" title="Click here to read more about Breaking! So we were actually getting a warm and fuzzy feeling in our gut over the straight talk coming live and correct from the folks at FoMoCo. When the automaker released July sales numbers today, they threw down a graphic we thought represented an honest look at what the numbers said..."car sales down, truck sales down." Apparently someone in Dearborn felt they were keeping things a little too real, 'cause they've gone and removed that graphic and replaced it with one more indicative of PR flak-speak. The new one, as you can see above...tries to put the warm and fuzzy feeling back on the numbers by claiming as the big news the increase in Fusion, Milan and Zephyr sales, but after seeing the last graphic...it just makes us feel kinda used and violated. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/191299/breaking-fomoco-makes-bold-move-says-fuck-you-to-straight-talk-and-switches-sales-graphic" title="Click here to read more about Breaking! This is what we love about FoMoCo. Not only do they serve us sales figures fairly straight up, they even provide fun little graphics for us to use...like the one to the right. That's correct, we didn't create that — it came directly from Ford PR. Wasn't that nice of them? Unfortunately, the numbers aren't quite as good as FoMoCo's always-smiling PR folks — car and truck sales were down 34% in July due to comparison with a tough number the Dearborn automaker had to beat because of them dang employee discounts. Luckily car sales weren't off all that much...only 7%, but truck sales...truck sales sucked, down 44%. More importantly, sales of the F-Series pickup, the company stud — off 46%. But hey, at least they've got Taylor Hicks, right? <a href="http://jalopnik.com/191284/breaking-ford-announces-34-drop-in-us-sales" title="Click here to read more about Breaking!
