When we had to sum up the V8-powered S 63 AMG, we famously went 'GHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!' So what could I possibly say about the S 65 AMG, the V12 version with 630 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque? It's the most luxurious missile you've ever seen.
You buy this car because of the engine. It's a hand-built 6.0-liter biturbo V12 featuring an aluminum crankcase, a heavy duty forged crankshaft, twin-spark ignition (that's 24 spark plugs right there) and an air-to-water intercooler. It's not like anybody would need 630 horsepower and 738 ft-lbs, but you know, why not?
That's enough for a 0-62 sprint in 4.3 seconds (the S 63 does it in 4.4, or 4.0 with all-wheel drive) and a top speed of 155 mph (limited of course). The V12 also gets a unique carbon fiber engine cover in case you want to show it to the neighbors on a sunny afternoon.
The S 65 is only available with the long-wheelbase body and the seven-speed automatic transmission. It also gets the same lithium-ion battery pack as the S 63 in order to save 44 pounds. Forged light-alloy 20-inch wheels also lower unsprung masses, which together with the predictive "magic ride" suspension and the variable steering ratio should make the über sedan handle rather nicely.
The options list is shorter than the standard equipment, so the S 65 comes with pretty much everything Mercedes has to offer. Unfortunately though, while buyers are getting a posh clock in the middle, you have to pay extra for the best fold-out table ever.
If you look at most powerful S-Class and feel that something is still missing, I just direct you to the Brabus stand next door. Still, their car is missing 4 cylinders, so think it over.
Only a select few will be able to afford this car, but as somebody who happened to sit in the rear seat of the new S-Class, I highly recommend you befriend an S-Class owner and take a ride.
It's nice on a whole new level.
