It's Chrysler's other first production hybrid... and it's got a HEMI... it's got the same HEMI! The 2009 Durango HEMI Hybrid is maybe the cooler, rougher, slightly less-suburban brother of the Aspen HEMI Hybrid. Other than the big cross-hair grille and other cosmetic touches it's basically the same vehicle. This model also gets the two-mode 5.7-liter HEMI setup, the LED headlights, MyGIG entertainment system and other stock goodies such as a rear park assist camera, electronic roll mitigation and a bunch of airbags. Look for a deeper discussion of the two-mode HEMI hybrid system later today. Full press release after the jump. More »

That's right, it's Chrysler's first production hybrid... and it's their biggest SUV... and it's gotta HEMI! The 2009 Aspen HEMI hybrid comes with the hybrid two-mode system (developed with GM, Mercedes-Benz and BMW) mated to a 5.7-liter HEMI tuned for 385 horsepower. The setup is good for more than a 25-percent overall increase in fuel economy and almost a 40-percent increase in city driving. The model you see here is set to hit driveways somewhere around mid-2008. When it arrives, standard equipment will include front and rear "aiming" LED lamps, the MyGIG entertainment system with navigation, rear power accessory outlets and a 60/40 third-row bench. No word yet on price, but we imagine you're looking at a decent premium over the stock Aspen. Chrysler's Jim Press says his company plans to offer an alternative-fuel powertrain option in every model it sells. Press told the Detroit News diesel, plug-in, fuel-cell and gas-electric hybrids could all be used to backfill Chrysler's lineup with environmentally friendly alternatives. The vice chairman of Chrysler says the company's commitment to green technologies comes from the top — new owner Cerberus Capital Management, whose financial boffins probably have figured to the tenth of a cent what a greener image would sell for. Despite such lofty goals, Chrysler has a long way to go before it'll be known as a green automaker. Of the Big Six, Chrysler is the only company without a hybrid on the market right now. The Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango will be the company's first hybrids when they arrive in 2008, using a two-mode hybrid system mated to the 5.7-liter Hemi. And yes, as we told you first earlier this summer — it's called the "HemiHybrid." We spent the morning out in Chelsea, MI checking out the latest and greatest from the soon to no longer be 'merican side of the German-American hybrid at their annual "What's New?" event. It's an opportunity for all the auto journalists on this side of the country to get a chance to grab with grubby hands every bit of what's coming out in 2008. Some of what's new we're allowed to talk about, some of what's new we aren't so much allowed to talk about. But one of the surprise appearances at this year's event was a preview of two large SUV's that Chrysler's head of product development, Frank Klegon hopes will revitalize sales of large SUV's. It's the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen dual-mode hybrids — and yeah, they've both got a Hemi. We had a chance to take the Durango Hemi hybrid out for a spin on the track at the development center and then afterward we talked with Frank Klegon in <strike>an exclusive sit-down</strike> an instance of extreme luck when he ambled over to sit with us during lunch. We asked Frank... More »

Presidential wannabe Barack Obama came to Detroit earlier this week and hammered on Detroit automakers for spending too much time focusing on horsepower rather than fuel efficiency. Here's an example of his lovely comments:
"For years, while foreign competitors were investing in more fuel-efficient technology for their vehicles, American automakers were spending their time investing in bigger, faster cars,"
In addition, Obama spent the better part of his remarks criticizing US automakers for not building more hybrid vehicles like Toyota and Honda. Well, we're glad to see Obama's shifting the blame from the consumer to the automakers. That must explain why the Illinois Senator and Presidential candidate owns a HEMI-powered V8 Chrysler 300C. Obviously it's Chrysler's fault Obama bought a big 5.7-liter engine from them — he just didn't have a choice. – Ray Wert More »
