Fans of black Ford sedans, unisex hair styles, scenic Pacific vistas, and cheesy dialog, will be ecstatic to hear that the entire 1968 first season of television's finest Hawaiian cop drama is at long last available on DVD. While this news was first reported months ago, getting the discs onto the shelves was evidently about as an impossible task as McGarrett telling Danno to check every tire dealership on the island, or everyone that's eaten breakfast at the Honolulu International House of Pancakes since 1966. And we thought the 405 sucked. An Army excavator whacked a pedestrian bridge, forcing officials to shut down the H-1 freeway, the state's most populous island's main artery. The resultant traffic jam lasted for fourteen hours. Fourteen freaking hours. People were forced to sleep in their cars. Some abandoned their vehicles entirely. Others overheated or ran out of gas. You know, if Steve McGarrett were on the scene, he would've had the problem solved in an hour, minus time for commercial breaks. Us? We just would've called T.C. and had him fly us outta there. While we understand that 30 over in many situations can be an unsafe speed, and is generally regarded as such on the mainland, we think it's pretty surprisiing that Hawaii is adding any speed over 80, regardless of the posted limit, to some pretty heavy-duty speed penalities. If you're nailed, expect a $500-$1,000 fine, a 15- to 30-day license suspension, a mandatory driver education course and either 36 hours of community service or two to five days in jail. And that's just for a first offense. Apparently, in the post-McGarrett era, speeding is now as big a menace to the 50th state as Wo Fat once was. More »

They're crushin' so many junk cars on Maui, they went 'n' done broke their baler! The baler, that handy-dandy device that packages spent vehicles into smart little cubes, gave up the ghost and the determined people of the island are having to use a steam shovel to smash the cars up. Okay, so Bakersfield wasn't a surprise, but to us mainlanders who've never had a chance to visit the Islands Formerly Known as Sandwich, we're a bit shocked that Hawaii's got an apparently serious junk car problem. Having declared the island a "disaster area," alliteratively-named Governor Linda Lingle has authorized the towing of the cars to a site at the old Puunene Airport, a temporary location until the island can finally cobble together a Department of Health-certified scrapyard. Is it just us, or does "Old Puunene Airport" sound like a euphemism for female genitalia? More »
