Holy mackerel! These photos come out of left field and surprise even us: The next version of the Mercedes Benz SLR will be getting gullwing doors. Obviously, the vertical lifting portals hearken back to the original Mercedes Benz 300 SL (incredible coincidence running that today huh?) and will ostensibly make the Mercedes Benz SLC the most sought-after supercar in quite some time. Certainly it'll burn the tarmac right off the street with V12 power, but this, this we are delighted to see. Congratulations Mercedes, you're today's real automotive company of genius. Spec'ing the New Mercedes Gullwing

Since, oh around 2006, we've been hearing rumors of a new Mercedes gullwing that's reportedly in the works. Set to honor the original 300SL, the story goes, Mercedes will release the new model in 2010. It'll be powered by AMG's 6.2-liter V8, tweaked to produce between 600 and 750 horsepower. The rumor mill also pegs it as having an all-aluminum chassis, a monocoque body shell built from melted Krugerrands and a button on the steering wheel that summons a man in a black cape serving tartlets of Tomme de Chèvre des Pyrénées and a flinty Puligny-Montrachet. Actually, we don't know much about it at all, and neither does the Schulte-meister. But he nonetheless renders a decent speculation of what such a beast might look like. Someday. In its August issue, Automobile expands on a story in AutoBild last month indicating that a new Mercedes-Benz Fl gelt rer — that's 300 SL gullwing to you, Yankee — was being readied by the company's AMG division. According to the magazine, the 750 hp supercar, reportedly due to be slotted into the AMG lineup above the SL65 in 2011, will have the AMG-built 6.2 (6.3) liter V8, tweaked with a pair of turbos and linked to a seven-speed, dual-clutch tranny. The suspension will be mechanical (no air springs). They're even talking about a 1,000hp SLR overshadower to come later. Exactly. The 2010s are going to be fun! More »
