As if the late-breaking Friday night news of merger talks between Chrysler and GM weren't astonishing enough, Bill "Pickles" Vlasic at the New York Times continued the onslaught of amazement with a follow-up story that GM had initially approached Ford before speaking to Chrysler. Apparently, GM execs approached Ford about a possible merger in July but Ford rejected the idea despite the talks progressing until as late as last month. And we though it was hard creating a name for a merger of GM and Chrysler — try coming up with one for Ford and GM. Best we could come up with was "Big Blue Moval." More »

There's some kind of silly NAIAS Automotive Securities Analyst Event hosted by Citigroup today over in Dearborn at the Ritz. I've no idea what the hell it's all about, but we know the General's got a number of execs there including Rick "I'm The Boss" Wagoner, Bob "I'm With Boss" Lutz, Fritz "Money-Man" Henderson and Troy "NorAm's My Bitch" Clarke. No idea if there's going to be any news out of this thing, but we'll be listening in on the conference call to see if anything interesting happens. But, at the very least, they've issued paper on it that we're to bored to read so if anyone wants to take a stab at it — it's after the jump and it's named "GM Outlines Priorities For 2007" and that sounds important. Jalopnik Team Party Crash: Bob Lutz Eats "Hamburgers" At The GM Holiday Party, We Eat It Up

That's right, kids — we snuck into the General's holiday party over at the world's biggest automaker's world's biggest Heritage Center, located deep in the heart of Reagan Democratic politics — Sterling Heights, MI. Although we made it in a bit late, we still found ourselves in range to fire a few questions at Chief Exec "Slick" Rick Wagoner, who wore a smile that told the story of the night — "What? We're an auto company in trouble? Wait, phew — I'm not Ford!" But while other — more real — journalists went after C-levels like the FO, Fritz "Earn This" Henderson, we knew we wanted to spend a few brief moments with "Maximum" Bob Lutz. Unfortunately, the only words Bob said to us were "Oh, Hi" and "I need to get one of those hamburgers" as he moved past us towards a food station serving sliced tenderloin and dinner rolls, Road & Track editor Matt DeLorenzo following along behind toe-to-heel — but whatevs, we could almost smell fuel trucks in the jetwash left in his wake. Although intoxicating as the kerosene and paraffin scent may have been, we needed to press on, next meeting up with some of the other younger auto journos from both the interwebs as well as from the ink and paper outlets, where we were provided with some supercilious attention from an overzelous Chevy PR staffer. And as I looked over at the mainstream media young'ns who were now tasting the same not-at-all-condescending reaction us web outlets normally receive, I felt a sense that all was right in the world. Then I remembered I was at the GM Holiday Party and immediately left to go home and spent an hour in the shower with lava soap and a scrub brush. Breaking! GM Goes Biblical On Accounting Staff; Peter Bible Resigns

You'd think after a number of "accounting mishaps," the General woulda found someone to fire — someone must have messed stuff up enough that they could actually be fired, right? Apparently not, as all they've done so far is announce some "resignations" — which we guess are corporate-speak for "shit-canned." We've already seen a couple of moves under the leadership of new CFO Fritz Henderson — but this one's kinda up there. The latest casualty appears to be Peter Bible, GM's Chief Accounting Officer. He's elected to resign in order to "pursue other career options" — which we guess is schlep-speak for "I just got shit-canned." GM's also plans on drafting AlixPartners, a Southfield-based financial advising company, to help with all sorts of bean-counting. Lastly, GM's going to combine the positions of controller and chief accounting officer — and have launched an outside search to find America's next top executive. Good luck filling that one, boys! GM Puts On Rose-Colored Glasses; Hands In Front Of Eyes, Thinks You Can't See It Anymore

Delphi's in bankruptcy court and simultaneously planning on dropping a few million on executive bonuses. The UAW's going to authorize a strike, like, yesterday. Negotiations between the two have basically stalled with the two acting like arguing sibling's — all the while GM's sitting over in the back seat — teetering between profitability and the deep, dark cavern of bankruptcy. So how odd was it to see Fritz Henderson, GM's Chief Teeterer...err...Chief Financial Officer, telling a group of auto analysts in New York last week he was "optimistic that Delphi would reach a negotiated settlement with its unions before the end of the summer?" Guess we're glad to see someone's feeling optimistic. More »
