The Smart Fortwo is small enough to park two to a space, which makes a ForTwo taking up two spaces in Portugal a particularly exceptional example of asshattery. This tiny car may be driven by the biggest asshat yet. More »

Small vehicles like the GEM e2 and Tiger minitruck advertise low cost and efficiency, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety thinks they shouldn't share the road with regular vehicles. This morning's IIHS report on the shocking finding that little cars don't take well to colliding, at speed, with bigger cars? Now we have the crash videos. Let's take a look at all three below. More »

What's a dog-and-pony show without some kind of award? At this year's LA Auto Show they'll be awarding Green Car Journal's fourth Green Car of the Year Award to one of five finalists. Smart USA will begin selling a Smart fortwo BRABUS model beginning in February according to an email sent to customers yesterday. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting the BRABUS performance tweaks — which take the 70 HP engine up to a staggering 98 HP and reduce the 0-60 time from 13 to 9.9 seconds — instead, the US is just getting the BRABUS bodykit and wheels. Customers with existing Smart ForTwo reservations, but who have not yet configured their cars, will be given the first chance to order one of the 1500 models Smart USA intends to import starting at 8pm tonight. The full email follows the jump. More »

During our first drive of the 2008 Smart ForTwo we enjoyed its small size in the big city, but we would have really enjoyed some extra power. This Lorinser-tuned ForTwo may not be a sports car in the traditional sense, but with 101 HP from its turbocharged 3-cylinder, it's a nice improvement over the stock mill. However, even though the car weighs just 1700 lbs, 0-62 MPH still takes almost 10 seconds, likely due in part to the sluggish semi-automatic gearbox. Sure, you get a Lorinser body kit and some spiffy rims, but we'd still rather just build ourselves a 'Busa Smart. Humorous ESL press release after the jump. More »

Though not yet available to the public, Daimler has released a few copies of their electric Smart Fortwo to agencies and companies around Britain for some real-world testing. Don't be surprised if you're cruising around Islington only to find yourself apprehended by a bobby in a juiced-up Smart car, though you can try to escape by driving further than the car's 72-mile range. If you can get the cops to run out of power that'll give you an eight-hour jump on them. Drivers of the vehicles have access to free electricity in certain parts of the city and free or discounted parking in London. If it's good enough for Shaq it's probably good enough for some dude named Yorrick. Press release below the jump. More »

While we know firsthand that you can fit more than two people in a Smart ForTwo, there really isn't enough room in the back to sit comfortably... or hide discreetly. Smart acknowledges this, and sees it as a good thing. After absorbing the scare tactics featured in this banned commercial, we sort of agree. More »

Living near the border between predominantly gay and urban-chic neighborhoods we've seen more than our fair share of the 2008 Smart ForTwo. People must have assumed they were safe, and the Smart ForTwo crash test results support these assumptions (as do the unofficial Smart ForTwo crash test results). But just because it's safe doesn't mean we'd want to drive one (well, maybe a Smartuki or an Ultimate 112). Putting aside safety and style, there are a few factors here to give us pause. More »

Although we've already seen the NHTSA crash tests and the leaked IIHS test video, the official Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test results are finally in for the 2008 Smart ForTwo. It turns out the little bugger did pretty well. IIHS awarded the micro-machine its highest rating of "Good" for front and side crash protection, and an "Acceptable" rating for seat and head restraint performance in rear-end crashes. Mounting evidence like yesterday's Smart pinball challenge and this IIHS result is proving that yes, Joe American, the ForTwo is a real car that won't crumple like a tin can in a low-speed or mid-speed crash. Full results and crash images on page two. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/390199/2008-smart-fortwo-iihs-crash-test-results-in-little-tyke-did-good" title="Click here to read more about 2008 Smart ForTwo IIHS Crash Test Results In, Little Tyke Did "Good"">More »

Commenter and confusion artist extraordinaire Polar has dropped a set of pictures into our lap of the ultimate expression of Smart ForTwo v. <del>US</del> North American roads. While sitting at an intersection, a colleague of his (he actually has a job !?) got a bit of a surprise in the back end — a very large truck was interested in occupying the same space his Smart ForTwo was in at the time. Well, we'll just let you read sir Polar's take on things: More »

The impossible ridiculousness of this car is only matched by its utter brilliance. The nutjobs who brought us the stretched Ferrari limo have plied their craft on a decidedly less high performance automobile. They've dubbed their creation the Smaaart ForTwo (see what they did there?) and are pitching it towards soft drink makers as a moving billboard. Gee, wonder which soft drink they're aiming for. Why did they choose a Smart? Why not? Reuters is reporting the Smart ForTwo has passed the US Government crash tests with flying colors — despite the drivers side door unlatching in a side impact crash. We're not sure if this means policymakers have determined an increased probability of passenger ejection is a positive performance attribute, or if the ForTwo performed so well in other areas as to make up for the shortcoming. We can't see any door opening action in the above video from the NHTSA crash, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. [Reuters] video from Streetfire More »

Like Turner and Hootch, Tango and Cash, Gary Busey and a bottle of scotch, Mercedes-tuner BRABUS has put together a winning pair for the Geneva Motor Show. This time it's a Mercedes SLR McLaren and a Smart Fortwo. The SLR McLaren gets a new white carbon fiber bodykit, 20-inch alloy wheels, special interior and an upgrade to the 5.5 Liter supercharged V8 that boots power to 650 hp and helps propel the roadster to a top speed of 211 mph. The matching Smart becomes the ULTIMATE 112, referring to the increase in power to 112 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. The Smart also gets a matching exterior treatment along with the lipstick-red BRABUS Mastik letaher interior and black Alcantara touches. Though sold separately, we think they're a steal when purchased for the package price of $1,062,000. More pics and press release below.

The Smart has been making a considerable splash since its conception way back when. Still, if you hope to travel as anything other than a solitary male or female, the occupancy of this vehicle needs to be taken into consideration before deciding to purchase. Luckily, the folks at Wired put together a nice chart to determine whether or not you're fit for a Smart.
Simply add up the items that apply to you. If your total is less than 15, a Smart car ought to work fine:

Because the Smart Fortwo is for the urban buyer, the company has sponsored an art project instead of a NASCAR team. Entitled "sideways. a smart art project," the project will include "work from the fields of photography, illustration, graphic design, painting, sculpture, architecture, styling, hairstyling and make-up... making creative statements about how we can promote greener modes of transportation." The result will be a book that'll debut at the New York International Auto Show next month for around $45.00 a copy. Some of the work we've seen isn't bad, though the above photo of the Japanese school girl birthing a Fortwo next to a phallic hopscotch court just moments before being eaten by a crocodile sort of loses us. More »

The 2008 Smart Fortwo is burdened with preconceived notions like no car before it. It's not safe. You can't drive it on the highway. It's too small for super sized Americans. It's Green. It's gay. The car was launched in Europe in 1998, so Americans have had a decade to develop these assumptions. Until now, few have driven it, and never on American soil. Yesterday, we did.

Small cars—wave of the future or grim throwback to the gaslines of the 1970s, just with cooler exteriors and cupholders? Plenty of lip service was paid to the treehugger obsessions of Generation fortwo at the Detroit Auto Show's Michelin Design Challenge. The brief? Create designs that are rinkydink, don't chug fuel, and won't kill anybody. Legions of dewy young designers (and presumably a few not so dewy ones who have always burned to create a teensy set of wheels) rose to the challenge and submitted to review over two days at Art Center College of Design. A few aspirants were perhaps excessively inspired by Bibendum's spongy girth and—focusing on the always tricky prospect of preventing people from being mangled in small-vehicle collisions with much larger vehicles—added airbags to the outside of their concepts. Heck, if it worked for Russian space capsules hurtling to hard landings, why not micromobiles? Everything returns to normal in 2009, when the shrunk stuff goes away, the airbags go back inside, and patriotism is restored by the theme "Brave and Bold: America's Next Iconic Vehicle." Eff-yeah!!! More »

We don't have many details as Wes, our intrepid road trip warrior, doesn't have internet access on the floor at the moment, but we've just been told Smart has unveiled a micro-hybrid drive with stop-start technology. It cuts the engine below 5mph when braking and it gets 58 MPG. We'll have more from the Detroit Auto Show on this new but not at all startling development when we get more. More »

Dr. Tobias Zetsche, you blowhard! First you tell us to put down $99 deposits on your little Smart Fortwo. Then you tell us that the 30,000 deposits exceed production capacity. "Down payments are going far beyond the production capacity we have," said Zetsche, who refused to elaborate on what that actually meant. The bargain basement model will come in at $11,590 with the fully loaded versions coming in closer to $20,000. More »

What's smaller than a Maytag and runs on a gas-electric hybrid powertrain? If you answered Tom Cruise, give yourself an air punch. If you answered the Smart Fortwo, jump up on the couch and declare your love for someone half your age in an awkward display of borderline sociopathy. But we kid the Smart Fortwo. And in honor of Earth(TM), Smart showed off new alt-dot-energy versions of its minicar. They're just concepts, but expect a production model or two down the road. The zero-emission Smart Fortwo electric vehicle is a true EV with a rear-mounted 30 kW electric motor and sodium-nickel-chloride battery. Range is a mere 71 miles and it requires a 240v connection to top up. A Smart hybrid concept combines a 44-hp gas engine or 800cc diesel with a 20 kW electric motor. Slated for production later this year, the Fortwo micro hybrid drive will have engine stop-start function over the current automanual. Like mild hybrids from GM, the system uses a belt-driven starter generator to both power the car's electricals and crank over the engine in a fraction of a second. No word on a US release. Click through for pressifications. More »

We want a blue and white one to drive up in just like the two lovable and huggable stars of the "Mii" ad campaign for the Nintendo Wii <strike>save the cheerleader in</strike> drive. Because that'd be simply hetero-dorable. One more commercial after the jump. – Ray Wert More »

Brabus will show off its latest Smart tuners, based on the new generation Smart Fortwo models, at the Geneva show next month. Of course, us Yanks wont be graced with the Mercedes tweak shop's latest, but Europeans will get every single one of the 98 hp and 103 foot pounds Brabus is offering. And that's enough to bring the diminutive pod cars to 62 mph in under 10 seconds. Don't laugh, the stock model measures that figure in miles per hour Kelvin. They also get sports exhausts and a firmer suspension tune, as well as Brabus alloys. The company's Xclusive model comes with a a body kit, heated leather seats and other interior accouterments. Expect pricing by mid year. – Mike Spinelli More »

Don't adjust your rods and cones, this Smart Fortwo really is actually glowing like dandruff particles in a blacklit nightclub. It's part of an art project headed by Katharina Sieverding, whose large-scale self-portraits from the early 1970s convinced artsy types that photographs could succeed as legitimate conceptual objects (as well as being pretty creepy). Two of Sieverding's master-class students shot the Fortwo, which had been covered in luminescent green paint, in a series of photos that will be shown at Galerie Viaux in Berlin in March. The proceeds will go to charity. – Mike Spinelli More »

England is car hell. Let's forget about the expensively obvious for a moment (insane taxes, equally insane gas prices, doubly insane speed cameras on every corner and under your bed) and the plain daf (Clarkson thinks the Jaguar XK is cooler than the upcoming Dodge Challenger) and look at the cars themselves. They suck! Nine out of ten cars in Old Blighty are 1.9-Liter French diesels. The rest are Korean brands you don't even want to know about. (SsangYong Rexton II, anyone?) Sure, you will see an occasional large BMW "saloon," but closer inspection will reveal it to be a 520d SE with a 1995cc oil burner and tiny wheels (though, it does — slowly — get 41mpg). Audis sell pretty well in London, but the overwhelming majority of them are three-door A3s with puny engines. In other words, rebadged Golfs. (Jump baby, jump) More »

Despite the arrival of the first US Smart Fortwo models in 2007, Europeans will still have one Smart up on the Yanks. That is, the Brabus-tuned Smart. With the current Brabus Black Star 101 ending production with the 2006 model, the company's working on its tuner version of the next-gen Fortwo, which spies have apparently caught in cabrio form during cold-weather flogging. With Brabus's help, the new model may just break 10 seconds in the zero-to-60 sprint, which is the Smart equivalent of doing a nine-second quarter mile. – Mike Spinelli More »

Welcome to the world, you 2007 Smart Fortwo, you. DaimlerChrysler today released an official press kit for the slightly redesigned and newly powered Smart car, the first version planned for US sales since the initial Swatchmobile was deemed far too large to wear as a timepiece, and abandoned by the Swiss. Eventually, that model was adopted by the auto industry, where it grew to become gleefully unprofitable for its remaining owner, Mercedes-Benz. Now, after a good spanking from Dr. Z. and a purging of its corporate siblings, the Mitsubishi-sourced Forfour and perky Roadster, the hopeful new Smart will hit dealerships in Europe by year's end, and the US by 2008. The new motor is a 1.0-liter three banger — available in three horsepower ratings (61 hp, 71 hp and 84 hp), with a 45 hp diesel option — hooked to a five-speed manual (no automatic). Top speed is 90 mph — 6 mph more than its predecessor. No word on the profit margin for the new-generation model, but let's say it'd better be good, or the 00s may be the little guy's last decade on earth. The Chinese are either the best or worst reverse-engineers in the world. Check out this from Shandong Huoyun, a division of the Qilu Petrochemical Corporation; it's a nearly indistinguishable knockoff of the Smart Fortwo. Under the skin, however, it's an entirely different beast. As its name reveals, the HuoYun Electromobile is an EV with a range of 75 miles and a top speed of 31 mph. Considering it's also lacking the Smart passenger-safety cell, 31 mph is probably more than fast enough. We also hear some enterprising New Yorkers have already started selling these from a blanket laid out on Fifth Avenue. Caveat emptor, German tourists. – Mike Spinelli More »

Yes, we know the Prius and Smart are both fuel efficient little buggers, but seriously — as driving machines, they really suck ass. And what's the point in driving if you aren't going to have fun when you do it. If the experience is gonna suck, you might as well take the bus or something because at least you'll be able to do the crossword puzzle. – Ray Wert More »

Good thing we didn't include the Smart Fortwo in our latest reader poll of what we should cover in Paris. Turns out, the company's not unwrapping the new little 'un in the city of lights. Buried in the lower third of a press release from DaimlerChrysler today came word the redesigned Fortwo — the one that's coming to the US — "is not on show in Paris," and that, "The world premiere will take place this year, at a location outside of the trade fair circuit." Outside the trade fair circuit? Do these guys think we're made of frequent flyer miles? Read the entire release after the jump. More »
