Automotive News reports that the 2009 Honda Fit is scheduled to start arriving in showrooms as you read this, more than a month earlier than the planned October 1 arrival. Why the rush? Fit sales are up more than 70% this year in light of high gas prices and positive press; Honda has done everything possible to increase production, but dealers were still going to be sold out of Fits for most of September. Rather than lose sales, Honda sped up its product plans, getting the new Fit to market seven weeks ahead of schedule. As if the Honda Fit didn't already sip gas like fuel is approaching stratospheric prices, which it is, Honda is working on sticking a version of their hybrid system in the little city cruiser. The company had originally expressed some reluctance to increase the price of small cars by dropping in the expensive hybrid parts, but President Takeo Fukui explains that with the price of crude oil going up "a Fit hybrid is starting to make sense." The plan is to make the switch in the early 2010, which means that it would likely launch on platform similar to the 2009 Honda Fit that debuted in New York this year, depending on where exactly in the development range this falls. Aside from the irritatingly average, Gap-clad models cheerily driving it on stage, notable features are the 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission - the Fit Sport comes with paddle shifter - the six airbags that come as standard, the ACE body structure - it's strong and light to boost safety - and the one-touch fold rear seats. The new Fit's just been revealed, but Mugen have already had time to tweak it. Featuring the usual assortment of GRP body addenda, annoying exhausts and big wheels, the official Honda tuning partner has also added useful features like upgraded suspension and brakes and a short throw shifter. The next incarnation of Honda's subcompact Fit (Jazz for you continental types) is going on sale in Japan this week. You've already seen the new design, by way of a recent anticlimax. Now the details on Honda's next-generation fit come on the heels of news the company's sales are off dramatically in Japan, giving the new Fit that much more pressure. A newly tweaked 1.3-liter four and CVT transaxle provide go to the base model, while a new Road Sailing (RS) version gets a 1.5-liter producing 20 extra horses (120 total). As for utility, it gets a novel utility function, "Ultra Seat!" (exclamation ours) that allows rear seating to dive and release in one motion. We'll get our shot in the US by 2009. More »

So in case you didn't notice due to our server hiccups on Friday, it looks like the walls of that there embargo on the JDM 2009 Honda Fit fully came a-tumblin' down at the end of last week — well before we're supposed to see it in person at the Tokyo Auto Show near the end of next month. Edmunds has the full scoop on the new Fit in all it's shiny n' tiny glory. Or however much glory you can get into a car shaped like a door wedge. Although it's not as tiny as the last model. Like its stablemate, the new Accord, the new Fit's actually gotten bigger — the wheelbase has been increased 2 inches to 98.4 inches and the overall length went up 2.2 inches to 153.5 inches. The rapscallion who runs the Hollywood Extra has somehow managed to snag some shots of the 2008 Honda Fit a month before it's supposed to officially be revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show. Back in the punk rock days of the early eighties Boston, a weekly paper called Boston Rock published a comic called Steven. Like Picasso, Steven had a friend named Brock. Unlike Picasso's pal Braque, Brock lived in a refrigerator box. From the outside his box looked like a box, but inside it was a luxurious flat. Sometimes when Steven visited Brock, he'd be installing storm windows or an air conditioner on the box, and they'd retire inside to watch big-screen TV. PBS's MotorWeek, which is like Top Gear without humor, high production value or entertaining hosts, has named its "Drivers' Choice Awards" for 2007. Most of the choices aren't that surprising: Lexus LS as the "Best Luxury Sedan" and Ford Shelby GT500 for the "Best Performance Car." The one thing that sticks out is the Honda Fit, which is not only the "Best Small Car" but also the "Best of the Year." This is a year after the Honda Civic was named "Best of the Year." The UK's AutoExpress serendipitously rolled up on a test model of the new Honda Jazz, which is the rest-of-world's Fit. The new model — set for a Tokyo motor show debut later this year — looks to be slightly larger than the current one, though built on the same architecture, which means more people room in subcompactland. At first we thought the tire pressure safety sticker just featured this super cool wheel graphic because it was affixed to a Honda Fit, a vehicle with some manner of hep supposedly built-in. The wheel caught our eye because the illustration looked a lot like a cartoon version of a vintage Cragar five-spoke, or a two-dimensional representation of the classic Hot Wheels Redline wheel. On the pillar of the 2007 Honda CRV? Same sticker. Same wheel. In contrast to the massive de-mobilization taking place at some automaking concerns, Honda and Suzuki are having trouble keeping up with demand. Suzuki, despite limited automotive success in the American market, is adding 380,000 more cars per year to its pool via construction of new plants in Japan and Hungary. Meanwhile, the success of Honda's Fit in the US has taken the Japanese company somewhat by surprise, leading them to divert cars from a Chinese factory just to keep up with demand in the North American market. Although the news story yesterday of Honda looking to expand its manufacturing presence in the US was short on details — they've rectified that problem. The automaker added some more meat to the release and said today they are just a wee-bit away from selecting a Midwestern site for a planned $400 million, 1,300 job assembly plant. This is part of Honda's overall strategy to expand sales in the US to 1.76 million cars sold. The plant's expected to be producing hybrids (maybe even a hybrid version of the Fit or CR-V) — which is good, cause even with gas prices as high as they are now, Honda's only sold a not-so-fit 666 Insights this past year. If that isn't a sign of the apocalypse, we dunno what is. More »

The folks at Edmunds Inside Line appear to have heard from their Deep Throat at Honda, who says the hybrid CR-V that's been the subject of wide speculation is a non starter. The system is more feasible for cars, is the word from above, possibly referring to a steeper price differential due to the complexity of making the system viable for all-wheel drive. Watch for Acura to host the company's first hybrid SUV. As for the Fit, word is it won't get the Honda Insight's three-cylinder hybrid mill as had been rumored, but will get a new version of the Civic's IMA powerplant. More »
