Even though Sacramento's Evil Genius Racing might be best known around these parts for its role in the Black Metal V8olvo LeMons car, owner John "Evil Genius" Pagel actually spends most of his time building nice race cars. You know, the kind that cost more than 500 bucks, go fast, and tend to hold together for long periods without any need for duct-tape/beercan intervention. In this case, Evil Genius has assembled three Miatas to take on NASA's 25 Hours Of Thunderhill race next month. OK, fine, we know the official rules state that "added structural elements which extend past the original bodywork line" aren't allowed in the 24 Hours Of LeMons, but how could anyone be against this kind of safety enhancement? Actually, that display is the result of a game of Volvo 240 Musical Chairs, in which you take one Volvo race car, the free parts car obtained to help build the race car, and another free Volvo… and you mix them all together and end up with two Volvo racers and a well-picked-over (but still useful) parts car to bring to the 24 Hours Of LeMons Arse-Freeze-A-Palooza in December. For the rest of the story, you must jump like a Fiesta bouncing off the Quadra-Bumper!

When we were at Evil Genius Racing to get the cage put in the Black Metal V8olvo, we couldn't help but notice the bright red Yugo GV parked by the shop. Turns out the little Balkan pseudo-Fiat belongs to laboratory assistant and expert welder Evil Clint, who picked it up for next to nothing and is contemplating turning it into a 24 Hours of LeMons car. If he does... well, a Yugo would be a likely shoo-in for the People's Choice award, but it's a good thing Evil Genius Racing builds such solid rollcages- just imagine being in a Yugo on the same track as, say, the Size Matters Fury!
