A committee of <s>fat old men</s> "experienced auto journalists" (i.e. not us) have named the Mazda2 as the world car of the year. Just beating out the Ford Mondeo and Mercedes C-Class in a thoroughly interesting, relevant and credible competition. Additionally, all three finalists for World Green Car Of The Year were diesel powered, with the BMW 118d Efficient Dynamics winning. The Audi R8 surprised no one by receiving the cardboard pyramids representing both the World Car Design Of The Year and World Performance Car awards. More »

We've been saying for years the only efficient hybrid with current technology is one mated to a diesel engine, and now it looks like another automaker is jumping into the conceptual fray. Our little news yesterday on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5 — translated from Bruce, that appears to be an X5 outfitted with a 2.0-liter twin turbo common rail diesel mild hybrid (wow, that's a mouthful, ain't it?) — appears to be wholly true. BMW will be revealing this little concept in environmentally friendly CUV-ing at the Geneva Motor Show next month and they've now seen fit to reveal the rest of their press shots and the full press release, which we've got below the jump. Feel free to read through it if you're suffering from a strong desire to fall back into bed. For now, here's the gist of it — hybrid + diesel + BMW = Over 100 HP per liter (total of 204 HP), 295 lb-ft of torque between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Exciting, isn't it? More »

It seems that the cat is out of the bag and we now think we know what BMW will be highlighting, eco-wise, at this year's Geneva Motor Show. You know all that pleading for more diesel hybrids? According to CarScoop, the boys and girls form Bavaria will be showing off the "Vision EfficeintDynamics" which will be better known as an X5 with a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder mated to a hybrid system through an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to BMW, the system should apparently be good for 36.5 mpg (US) while still pulling the SUV to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds. The diesel engine produces 204 horsepower, but with help from the hybrid system achieves 224 horsepower and nearly 450 ft.-lb. of torque. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/359250/bmw-x5-twin-turbo-diesel-hybrid-concept-coming-to-geneva-its-happening-maybe" title="Click here to read more about BMW X5 Twin Turbo Diesel Hybrid Concept Coming To Geneva, It's Happening...
