GM Design chief Ed Welburn divulged some interesting facts to Bill Bortzfield from Jacksonville.com about the 2009 Chevy Camaro at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance this weekend. Welburn first lets slip that they'll have "the base model and the SS," thereby all but confirming an SS model. He then proceeds to rip into our exclusive and frequently-maligned spy shots of the 2009 Camaro interior and engine bay, saying "The production interior is better than the concept... what has been on the internet were engineering mules... those were the images that leaked out." Is it an excuse, the truth or are they just buying time while they make tweaks? Or perhaps all you unruly fan-boys merely mistook plastic floor sheeting and Holden seating as "production level." We learned the man can be pretty darn funny in person — but he also revealed his own secret love of the "amerigasm" as proven by his decision to only collect and build on 'merican cars and trucks. In addition to that bombshell, one of the more interesting points from last night's Leno event introducing his one-off biodiesel-burning supercar was when we learned the idea for the EcoJet originated with some of GM Design VP Ed Welburn napkin doodles. Well, since the General's all about saving things for posterity — they even managed to save the napkin he doodled his ideas for this unveiled-at-SEMA supercar-to-be — or at least the cockpit of said vehicle. We've got that picture below the jump, and a full gallery of the CAD and design team work-ups of the project. Yes, that's Ed Welburn, GM's veep of Global Design. But the silver bullet with the Grateful Dead-looking logo in between them is what I came to see at the Wynn Casino late last night, mere hours before SEMA's official starting gun fires. It's the 650 hp (400 lb.-ft. of torque), bio-diesel monster supercar named the EcoJet. The mid-engined beast, originally sketched by Leno and Ed on the back of a napkin, shares design cues with everything from jet aircraft and Formular One racecars, and even, it would appear, the nose of a Cadillac STS. The Leno-Welburn love child is powered by a Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine running in a modified Corvette Z06 hydroformed aluminum frame with aluminum and magnesium structural and chassis components.
