We aren't sure there is such a thing as a normal AMC Eagle, but we feel safe saying other models of the 4x4 car were a lot less strange than this Sundancer convertible model. These convertible Eagles were offered through AMC dealers as an expensive coach built option for only two years. The Eagle's notoriously rust prone nature combined with the very low initial production numbers makes surviving Sundancers like this one currently on Ebay very rare birds. More »

In the pantheon of orphaned car brands, perhaps the most poignant today is Eagle, not because of its sales numbers but because of its lineage. Eagle was the bastard child of the 1987 AMC-Renault tie-up and its subsequent sale to Chrysler. At the time of the Chrysler buyout, AMC had product in the pipeline that Renault had a financial interest in seeing hit the market. Chrysler didn't want it — Jeep was their trophy — but Renault forced them to take the Franco-American models as part of the deal, so Chrysler spun them off into their own brand: Thus was born Eagle. When the Lotus Evora debuted yesterday, we were surprised nobody made mention of the weight — it didn't show up during the live press conference, in any of the specs on the web, or in the initial press release. The real press release on the Evora has finally emerged and, drum roll, the figure is 1,350 kg, or 2,976 lbs. Shocking. We were hoping for 2,200 lbs, maybe 2,700 lbs being realistic, but nearly a ton and a half has us shocked. Not only that, but a lot more options have us scratching our heads. Sure, we already knew what the new 2+2 from Lotus looked like — but we didn't know the name — until now. It's called the Lotus Evora. Yes, with the stroke of the "E" key, Lotus has added yet another E-word to the lexicon of Lotus history. The Evora is equipped with a 276 HP Toyota V6 making 252 lb-ft of torque and a six-speed gearbox, good for sub-5 second 0-60 runs. Of course, in the press conference, in proper British style, the only remarks on speed were, "We won't give you the speeds at the moment, because it wouldn't be appropriate, not with so many police around." Ferrari played their cards extremely well with the 2009 Ferrari California debut — it was stylish, it was measured, and it had the motoring press lapping out of the palms of their hands (a perfect example is today's spy photo of a topless California; see how Wert just laps it up? ). Lotus seems to be copying that campaign for the rollout of the pending 2010 Lotus Eagle, but this time, the marketing effort is decidedly more creepy. The "FacelessPeople" ad campaign consists at the moment of a website with a countdown timer, and, more bizarrely, people without faces attending public events wearing Lotus badges. Gah! Heebie jeebies anyone? Apparently the "True Character Will Emerge" in about 18 days. We're assuming that means they'll put a face on the much-anticipated new Eagle instead of covering it in a sheet. We've spent months seeing the 2010 Lotus Eagle in get-ups ranging from an old Lotus Esprit mule to an homage to the caped crusader with makeup and heavy camo obscura. Now, thanks to a single image making its way onto the internet by way of Lotus, we're now finally get our first idea of the Eagle's real shape. The teaser shot hints at a surprisingly Elise-like hood and headlight treatment. Visible under the shroud of Lotus, the sharp fenders and slanted headlight treatment are clearly visible, as is the center hood spine over the front mounted radiator outlets. More »

Future Spyker models will be built on Lotus platforms and share many of their parts thanks to a deal made earlier today. The Parts and Platform Commonality agreement should be good news for the troubled Dutch sportscar maker, meaning much of their development cost will be carried by troubled English sportscar maker, Lotus. The timing is especially good for Spyker, as it means they'll be able to take advantage of the forthcoming Eagle and Esprit models. More »

Like the Minotaur or the Griffin, the idea of a rust free AMC Eagle is one of legend, impossibility, sillyness even. Though these tanks posing as cars were the forerunners to todays crossover, and sported big AMC I6's, all-wheel-drive, and seriously crazy ride characteristics, they were not known for their corrosion resistance. They all laughed at the AMC Eagle back in the day; why would anyone want to buy a car with four-wheel-drive? And, of course, just about everything AMC did during the Late Malaise Era reeked of the panic swirling about Kenosha at the time, so car buyers could just picture the bash-to-fit frenzy of line workers running over to the Jeep assembly plant to swipe components to affix to Concord bodies. But these days everyone seems to want "command position" driver height and 4WD every bit as much as they want 16" diameter cupholders. Before its time! Those naughty folks at a Lotus are giving us the old "San Antonio Strip Tease" by releasing photos of the Lotus Eagle one piece at a time. While this doesn't give any hints to how the new 2+2 sports car is actually going to look, it does give some idea to as to the suspension setup. Using the new Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA), Lotus will be able to build a variety of cars using one platform, which is economical for a small manufacturer. The VVA setup includes three pieces: center occupant area, front module and rear subframe for the engine. This is a photo of the front module which is light (just 55 pounds) and functional thanks to the use of parts forged from aluminum. The setup will include aluminum control arms with Bilstein dampers and Eichbach springs. Bringing things to a stop will be the job of 13.8-inch vented rotors with Lotus AP Racing four-pots. The Eagle will also feature hydraulic assist for the steering rack, separating it from its Elise brethren. Press release below the jump. More »

You want rare cars in this series? How about this '88 Renault Medallion? After purchasing the wreckage of AMC in 1987, Chrysler decided to rebrand the Medallion as an Eagle partway through the '88 model year, so surviving Renault-branded examples are probably rarer than Hemi Superbirds (or '53 Packards, like the one that lives on the same block as this car). Based on that paragon of automotive build quality, the Renault 21, and tainted with the smell of death from obviously-doomed American Motors, sales of the Medallion started out poorly and went downhill fast from there. The only thing we know about this mule spotted out and about — somewhere is that it's a Lotus test mule. Our sources claim it's a mule for the Lotus "Project Eagle" a supposed 2+2 tourer powered by a mid-mounted, transverse Toyota V6 and it's set to be revealed by the blossom-flower-brand sometime next year — possibly at the Geneva Auto Show, although latest word direct from the mouth of Mike Kimberley, CEO of Lotus was that we'd see it at the London Auto Show. The "Eagle" is then slated to take flight and alight in showrooms beginning in Europe in 2009 as a 2010 model. Did we mention it's also supposed to have paddle shifters? Other sources tell us these pictures could be a mule for the new Esprit and still others tell us "It's a Lotus mule, who the heck really knows what's under there?" So back in the late Malaise Era, AMC was on the ropes. They needed a product that nobody else had, something that would turn their fortunes around. Since they already had a bunch of four-wheel-drive know-how and hardware on the shelf, they bolted all that stuff onto the Concord wagon and voilà! A station wagon that could deal with nasty road conditions and didn't suck quite as much gas as a big ol' 4x4 truck. As if Americans would ever buy a jacked-up station wagon that combines SUV and car attributes! From the station wagon far ahead of its time still rolling into the future department comes this fine AMC Eagle 4X4 spotted in a parking lot in fabulous La Crescenta, California. While we've seen plenty of plastered with punk rock stickers Toyota Corollas, and even a Nissan Axxess, this is the first time we've ever witnessed a punk rock stickered AMC Eagle of any kind.
