Opel has announced plans to launch two electric cars in the European market sometime early next decade utilizing GM's E-Flex hybrid banner and be built in the United States for export to Europe. One of the models would be based on the Segway-pooping Opel Flextreme concept and the other, a Vauxhall version of the same vehicle. As of now we're unsure whether the Vauxhall version will poop Segways. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/398465/opel-vauxhall-versions-of-volt-electric-cars-to-take-advantage-of-currency-valuation-get-made-in-usa-sticker" title="Click here to read more about Opel, Vauxhall Versions Of Volt Electric Cars To Take Advantage Of Currency Valuation, Get "Made In USA" Sticker">More »

Joining in on the small hybrid party, GM is showing off this Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept. The styling is familiar, and similar to the 9-4X BioPower. But what's underhood is new; a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that can run on either gasoline or ethanol, making 200 HP on the corn juice. This is mated to GM's next generation hybrid system, which we still don't know much about. Other interesting features are a solar panel on the roof used to help charge the batteries, and an active rear spoiler that elongates the body and reduces drag. For now, the small Saab is a concept; but expect to see it in showrooms before too long, positioned in the same segment as BMW's Mini. And even if this Saab doesn't make it to US shores, this platform will be the same used on the Chevy Volt. Full press-release after the jump. More »

Our partners in crime over at Giz may not have gotten any sleep this week while patrolling the Consumer Electronics Show, but they did manage to snap some shots under the hood of the hydrogen fuel-cell Volt. You'll notice the hydrogen tanks in the rear of the car and a battery pack out front that's smaller than the original by about 20% but will still let the car travel on electric-only power for about 40 miles. Remember, this is the same E-Flex platform found on the Cadillac Provoq. More »

It's good to see that we're not the only journos with the severe man-crush on GM's Vice-Chairman, "Maximum" Bob Lutz. It seems David Pogue, the gadget-obsessed tech writer at The New York Times also has a heavy dose of the Lutz love as he spent some time with Bob and GM's new 'lectric concept sled, the Volt. Pogue describes Bob as "a funny, smart, engaging guy." We wish he'd also noted the "Maximum" man-musk emanating from him, but whatevs, maybe he was just overcome by it. Regardless, Pogue got... More »

We were at Frankfurt's Bockenheimer Depot for GM's revealing of the Opel Flextreme Diesel Concept, the latest sheetmetal incarnation of the company's E-Flex architecture. The system uses a series hybrid system supported by a diesel engine operating at peak efficiency to charge a battery pack from from power supply firm A123. GM vice chsirmsn Bob Lutz took time out from flogging training jets to act as MC for the event, which included a light show and modern dance routine straight out of Mumenschanz circa 1977, minus the toilet paper rolls. We'll have a gallery up momentarily. UPDATE: Full press release after the jump.

Much to the chagrin of the folks at the General, it would appear shots of the not-even-embargoed Opel E-Flex platformed concept car have made it out onto the internet well before the Frankfurt Auto Show. Ah, you've got to love the internet. Or not. Either way, courtesy of the English kids at CarScoop, here's the hot load of diesel-powered Opel concept hotness, and below the jump we've got what they're telling us about this leaked concept car: More »

We already knew another E-Flex was coming, but now we're hearing from the folks at the UK-based online mag all about cars the General will be bringing a diesel-engined E-Flex concept car to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. We've already been told by GM the E-Flex plug-in hybrid platform can be paired with a variety of different systems for generating power for travels greater than 40 miles — and have already seen a gas and hydrogen version. But this is the first time we've heard confirmation they'd be hitting a show with a diesel version of the eco-concept in tow. Better yet, they're also reporting the General will be collaborating with Dean Kamen's two-wheeled replacement for walking, the Segway. We've no idea what they've got in store. However, while at the Riverwalk Festival in downtown Detroit a couple weeks back one of us spied amid the Saturn display a creation that represents the last time the General and Segway tag-teamed up for a joint venture. – Ray Wert More »

The General's awarded two contracts for development of lithium-ion batteries for its electric drive "E-Flex System." The "E-Flex System," if you'll remember, is the <strike>red herring</strike> <strike>vaporware</strike> electric vehicle architecture underpinning the Chevy Volt concept car shown earlier this year. One contract's heading over to lithium-ion supplier Compact Power, Inc in Troy, Michigan and the other is being awarded to battery-pack supplier Continental Automotive Systems in Frankfurt, Germany. Now it'll be the job of these two companies to develop something that will finally make Bob Lutz's flight of fancy take — err — to the road? Full press release after the jump. – Ray Wert More »
