This impressive Murphy-bodied 1931 Duesenberg Model J coupe owned by eccentric playboy George Whittell Jr. more than doubled the previous record Duesenberg sale ($4.455 million in 2004) when it brought $10.34 million dollars at auction last weekend. More »

While it's arguable whether or not the phrase "It's a Duesy" was originally adopted in reference to the Duesenberg, the quality of the cars had given the saying an additional meaning by 1934 when this JN model, currently for sale on Ebay, was built. More »

Six years, 6,000 handmade parts and 15,000 hours of labor. That's the short story of this fully-functional miniature 1932 Duesenberg SJ phaeton. It set a 24-hour speed record in 1935, hitting 135.58 miles per hour. Sixty-nine years later, The Duesenberg SJ Special "Mormon Meteor" sold for $4.45 million at a Pebble Beach Auction held by Gooding and Company. Now owned by Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati, it's won the approval of the seersucker'd set at Pebble, taking this year's Best in Show award. The SJ Special isn't the average Duesenberg, any of which are far from the bell curve's center. The supercharged stock engine had been replaced by Augie Duesenberg and salt racer (and eventual Salt Lake City Mayor) Ab Jenkins, who adapted a 1,650 cubic-inch Curtiss Conqueror V12 to the Special's Duesenberg chassis and body. It's since been returned to its more civilized, Deusy-powered iteration by Noted Duesy restorer Chris Charlton of Maine, replete with imposing chrome "DUESENBERG" deco type along the hood and a chrome "Ab Jenkins" script on the cowl. Raise a julep in its honor. [UPDATE: It's not a done deal, just a what-if scenario fielded by Mr. Foose in an Automotive News piece] Word from Automotive News is that custom-car impresario Chip Foose could be plotting to revive the Duesenberg name — once synonymous with robber-baron luxury — with SoCal concept-car builder Metalcrafters. The plan would be to produce a limited run of 50 of the elaborately appointed luxo-customs — rodded out with open wheels. Buyers will likely have to shell out upward of $299,000 — the price of a Foose Coupe — for said Foosenburg. We're not sure if such a revival would affect alternate plans by Minnesota's own Duesenberg Custom Coach, which has been fielding plans for the new Duesenberg Torpedo Coupe (see image) — powered by a novel, rotating powerplant derived from a firefighting waterpump. Either way, it's good to be a mutton-chomping, multichinned fat cat these days. More »

BidnessWeek's hopped on the Duesie bandwagon, and the article's got a bit more on the machine's unique propulsion system. Apparently, it was designed by legendary custom-vehicle nut Eddie Paul, patterned after a patent he holds on a water pump used by the men who fight the forest fires. The entire unit itself rotates, rather than featuring a conventional internal rotating assembly. Interestingly enough, the motor uses no oil; the gasoline is apparently lubrication enough, given the engine's design. To mix metaphors, could a lone gunman have built a better mousetrap? Time will tell, but in the meantime, the car will debut at Pebble Beach in '07 featuring a Merc 12 between the framerails. More »

A radical new Duesenberg — that symbol of ultraluxury motoring of the 1920s — could hit the market as early as January 2007. The Duesenberg Torpedo Coupe — a design by Jeff Teague, whose credits include models by Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Ford — will reportedly ride on the Mercedes CLS 500 platform and will be powered by a new, air-cooled and supercharged powerplant that the company says will get 70 mpg and 300 horsepower from a "100 pound package measuring 18 inches in diameter and 24 inches in length, which will provide an unparalleled power-to-weight ratio." No word on price, but expect the thing to cost robber-baron money.
