Dual-view LCD technologies have begun to appear in the home entertainment market, but now Hyundai is trying to bring that technology into the car with a dual-view in-dash display. The idea behind this technology is pretty simple. The driver of the car would see one image, presumably the navigation or vehicle info, while the passenger of the vehicle would see something different, like media information. More »

Detroit Auto Show: How Does Jeep's "Ink Jet" Waterfall Work?

While other brand's displays have come and gone (remember BMW's roundel tilt-a-whirl or Toyota's 1.5:1 scale of the Matsumoto Castle?), the Jeep waterfall display has been a cornerstone of the Chrysler brand's auto-show presence since 2000. According to the waterfall's builder, the system works like an ink-jet printer, with 3,000 valves organizing the droplets via computer program into visible logos and other messages, which appear as the droplets descend 24-feet into a trough. We're still waiting for Jeep to take the display to the next level, substituting flaming kerosene for water. Talk about attention-getting. – Mike Spinelli <a href="http://jalopnik.com/229337/detroit-auto-show-how-does-jeeps-ink-jet-waterfall-work" title="Click here to read more about Detroit Auto Show: How Does Jeep's "Ink Jet" Waterfall Work?">More »

From the department of clever displays on a budget: How do you simulate the Hummer H3's water-fording capabilities on dry land? First, cut wheels in half. Second, drop it into a lipid pool of lucite. Third, carry to Detroit. Get Make magazine on the horn, stat! More »

Not since Motley Crue's 1985 "Theatre of Pain" tour, in which Tommy Lee rolled out his "upside-down drumming" cage (years before he rolled out his "third bass-drum leg" on video), has a commercial display gotten as much attention as FoMoCo's space for the upcoming North American International Auto Show this January. The company will unveil a new, two-and-a-half acre display, built from more than 360,000 pounds of steel, 31,000 sheets of plywood and 2,400 LED screens, to create the "Ford Motor Company experience" for show visitors in Detroit. The display, which will accommodate all of its brands, will house more than 80 cars. None hanging from the ceiling, however. More »
