It turns out Mercedes officials knew the test wouldn't work, and so conspired with a journalist from Germany's AutoBild to pull it off for the cameras anyway. Turns out, the journalist — sorry, ex-journalist — who was to have been clandestinely cued when to apply the brakes, flubbed his part and crashed into the car ahead. Worst. Ex-journalist. Ever. Product. Demo. Ever." Three 2006 Mercedes S-Class sedans were damaged when a televised demonstration of the cars' groundbrakeing (heh heh) radar-guided automatic stopping system went ka-flawo. As Leftlane News reports, the carefully staged choreography called for the first car in a line of three to brake hard, while the anti-crash systems in the second and third cars were to have kicked in to save the day.
