The Hyundai Curb mini-crossover concept is a test of the company's future Blue Link multi-media interface and "fluidic sculplture" design language, as well as an attempt by Hyundai to be hip. After our news earlier on the XL-sized Genesis, here's the second piece of news-like rumor-busting for the day: We've been told by Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at Hyundai, that despite the rumors — and whether it be called a crossover, wagon or whatever-UV — don't expect to see another form factor from Hyundai on the Genesis platform anytime soon. While we mourn the loss of any opportunity for a rear-wheel drive wagon form factor, our dislike of crossovers in general is well documented. So we're both happy and sad. While we go and cry and laugh in a corner, take a moment to reflect yourself. That is all. More »

Here's the very first shots of the General's upcoming Theta-based crossover that's all about being "Professional Grade" — the 2010 GMC Terrain. The Terrain's showing a big block-like grille peeking through the semi-transparent bra it's wearing. Our spy shooters even indicate they believe the mesh you see surrounding said badge may in fact be indicative of a Denali trim. All we know is the Terrain will be kissing cousins to the Vue, and the next-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox. Also, it looks mind-numbingly boring. But if you're still interested — for god only knows what reason — hit the jump for the full spy report from the quick-to-shoot spy snappers at KGP.

Nissan has issued the first pictures of its new seven-seater crossover vehicle that takes the Qashqai and cranks the knob up by "+2." That's right, it's called the Qashqai+2, an all-new bigger Qashqai that seats two more than the original model of the strangely-named CUV. Nissan accomplishes the increased room by upping the wheelbase size from the 103.5 inches found in the Qashqai to 108.86 inches and the overall length from 169.7 inches to 178.2 inches. The new Qashqai+2 will be launched at the London Motor Show in July and comes to UK showrooms in the autumn. No word yet on whether we'll see the new crossover from the Japanese side of Carlos Ghosn's global partnership of equals, but we truly doubt it because despite the Qashqai being named after a nomadic people in Iran, the CUV has traveled pretty much only throughout the nations of Europe. Still, bully for Nissan for bucking trends by moving super size in a world where that's making increasingly less sense. Full press release after the jump. More »

We were so busy with the Q7 review, it seems the newly minted Autobild artists renditions slipped right by us. Our German is rusty (more like seized up) so we're going to treat these with kid gloves, but it looks like a new interpretation of details on the BMW X3 fighter. Even though some of these images are really clear, we have a hard time believing they're undoctored photos. You never know what those photoshopping kids can pull off these days. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/356803/was-ist-das-neue-photos-of-the-audi-q5" title="Click here to read more about Was Ist Das? In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, MINI CEO Kay Segler let it slip that the new MINI crossover/SUV will be called the Crossman, and not the Mini Monte as we'd all kind of hoped it would be. Crossman just sounds like a cross-dressing super hero... or maybe a super hero with David Cross' humor and good looks. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performed a battery of tests on new SUVs and determined that in 20-mph crashes the following vehicles performed poorly in the area of neck restraint:
BMW X3 and X5; Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Isuzu Ascender; Cadillac SRX; Chrysler Pacifica; Dodge Nitro; Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer; Mitsubishi Endeavor; Hummer H3; Hyundai Tucson; Jeep Liberty; Kia Sportage; Lexus GX470 and RX; Nissan Xterra; Saab 9-7X; Suzuki XL7; Toyota 4Runner and Highlander.
According to the IIHS, headrest failings lead to two million claims per year at an annual cost of $8.5 billion. Considering these types of vehicles are often heavy, clumsy and have more blind spots than Stevie Wonder's Synclavier, 20 mph collisions are common. All is not lost however; jump for the mixed news. More »

Chevy's kind of been the odd man out in the game of Lambda-platform musical chairs. With Saturn, Buick and even GMC getting into the crossover game with the newest Car-UV frame it seems like the brand name that's all about bringing value to the people doesn't yet have a seat in GM's people carrier. According to the Detroit News though, that's all about to change. Supposedly they'll be the newest recipient of the not-as-big-as-a-truck platform and it'll be getting the name...Traverse. Oh...boy. The...excitement...is...so...yawn...unbelievable. In case you've forgotten what this new-for-2010 might look like post-platform prostitution, take a gander at the galleries below. – Ray Wert More »

Although we weren't "lucky enough" to get a first drive of the new <strike>Opel</strike> Saturn <strike>Antara</strike> Vue, we're able to rely on the crazy kids at the site all about a Gary Numan song to show us what we're "missing." Rabbi Dave over at their blog, Kicking Tires, got a chance to whip one around for a bit, so until we get a chance in the driver seat, they're the best you're gonna get. Yeah, it ain't much, but like we said — it's the best we can get as of yet of Saturn's newly redesigned Car-UV. I mean, we're not saying the General's scared or nothing to let a "real blog" take it for a ride, but you know, if the tires fit...– Ray Wert More »

According to one self-stated attendee of an Infiniti focus group, posting on GM Inside News, Nissan's luxe brand has been busy on its upgrade path for the FX crossover. Although the current design's freshness date isn't quite up (at the moment), the company apparently has a more powerful, svelte and athletic FX in the works. More »

The concept Car-UV will be revealed for all to see next week at the New York Auto Show, but for now, the details we've got in hand come to us from the press release we've dropped in below the jump. The gist of it is that it appears the Genesis will be a rear-wheel drive car-platform powered by the newly developed Tau DOHC 32-valve V8 powertrain and we should expect to see it in some form as part of the Hyundai lineup in 2008. Oh, and expect a 0-60 time under six seconds. – Ray Wert More »

There are two contradictory reports out of FoMoCo today on the minivan replacement in the blue oval's lineup. Everyone appears to be in agreement that it'll be called the Flex rather than the Fairlane, its conceptual name. And that's good because whenever we think "Fairlane" we think "Adventures of," and that's no good thing if Ford wants families to be buying this thing. But we digress. The contradiction appears to be on something wholly more important — what the doors will look like. We kid you not, there are two contradictory reports, one from John Stoll of Dow Jones who claims
"The Flex carries three rows of seats and unique side doors that open from the middle - in opposite directions, much like French doors do - and are intended to be a modern alternative to the sliding door popularized by the minivan."
Sounds pretty cool if you ask us, but although Stoll's known for scoop, there's a bigger dog in the game of breaking news out of FoMoCo — and that's Bryce Hoffman from the Detroit News. If there's one man who's got the investigative skills to pay the bills, it'd be Bryce. He's the only reporter... More »

Somewhere in Europe, there's a buyer waiting for a high-roof Ford Focus that can trudge through snow like a mini Unimog, while hauling the kids, pets and groceries home from Sainsbury's. Soon, they'll be able to take delivery. Ford's been working on this Focus C-Max allroad for a while, as spy shots have testified. Now, according to Autocar, the four-by MPV is just about a year away. And the soft-roader will reportedly have better on-road manners than goat-trail skills. I feel like I've been a bit lax as of late in taking trips down El Camino lane, but I feel like I can make it up today. That's because we've got ourselves here a photo-chopped Dodge Caliber. This here p-chop turns Dodge's prostituted Mitsubishi GS platform from a Caliber — a simple mild-mannered CUV, into the Calibermino — a truly revolutionary vehicle able to finally see the vehicle's rugged face placed on an appropriately utilitarian vehicle.

That really is the question for <strike>soccer moms</strike> car buyers these days. Frankly, I don't have much experience driving the new car-platformed CUV's, leastwise on pavement and in inclement weather. But as an SUV owner, why would I want to? Having actually taken my four-wheel drive "cute bug" (ask Jonny Lieberman) off-road a few times, my level of confidence translates to on-road driving in lousy conditions. But then, I'm not the CUV's target market. Nonetheless, automakers are falling all over themselves to prove these new Car-UV's (like the General's trio of Lambda-platform vehicles, the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and the Buick Enclave and Nissan's new Rogue) are not only capable in the wet, white wintry stuff, but can do it with without causing a chronic brain rattle. Sensing an opportunity, I thought I'd give it a test by taking the newest jellybean-ness from FoMoCo out for a spin. Sure, I could be hill-climbing in San Francisco, tailgating in Texas or clawing at the desert scrub of New Mexico, places where automakers traditionally show off their most steroided-up new models. But I won't. Instead, I'll be taking a Lincoln MKX to where it's most likely to see action — the highways and byways of this great nation. And I'll be doing it in the middle of the winter. In the middle of a snow and ice storm bearing down on the midwest and east coast. And I'll be traveling from the slippery speedways of Michigan to the fish-school streets of New York City. Sound like a great way to potentially get myself killed? Absolutely. Sound like fun? You bet. With that, here's my diary of the trip: More »

Rick Wagoner's blue-haired Buick brand has now allowed pricing on the <strike>Outlook</strike> <strike>Acadia</strike> Enclave to run free out of the Woods. The CX, the base-level FWD version of the Buick Enclave, will hit showroom floors at the jaw-dropping price of $32,790, with the AWD model of the base-level coming in at $34,790. Now if you want some options on that CUV, the de-luxe model, the CXL, will come in at a $34,990 with FWD and the AWD starting at $36,990. That's nearly $3,000 more than the Acadia, its Lambda-platformed cousin at GMC and nearly $5,000 more than its platform-prostitute cousin, the Saturn Outlook. Considering all three start off with the same 275-hp 3.6L VVT'ed V6 what could provide for the huge price discrepancy? Oh wait, here it is — a "Tiffany-style analog clock", a "leather-wrapped, genuine Mahogany wood steering wheel," and the ability to have Tiger Woods answer your calls to OnStar. Sweet.

The automotive power-towers scattered across the Metro Detroit region are filled with people whose only job is to make people think sky-blue-pink thoughts about the vehicles sold by their company. These people — are people who need people to love them, and although they're known by different names at each company, their job is one and the same — to be public relations professionals. So, on a semi-regular basis we'll spend some time with these <strike>overpaid</strike> <strike>underworked</strike> overstressed PR pros in order to <strike>mock everything they hold dear</strike> talk with them and learn about their <strike>social lives</strike> products. In this, the first of what will hopefully be a plethora of episodes, we're talking with FoMoCo PR staffer Whitney Drake about Ford's "flagship," the Edge. While fending off the local yokels walking between us and the camera we'll ask her all sorts of penetrating questions about her job, her likes, her dislikes and whether she lives life on the edge. If, after the fluff stuff is done and there's time, we may even get around to asking her about FoMoCo's newest <strike>pumpkin</strike> CUV. – Ray Wert More »

The shooters at KGP have snapped shots of a crossover vehicle we've heard is code-named JC49 — it's a vehicle which will supposedly be built on the frame of the new Sebring/Avenger platform. Where what we've heard has diverged from what others are saying is on what market the new CUV (plus its potential Chrysler-branded cousin, which apparently has a similarly alphanumeric name — the JZ49) is heading for. The people at the ever-curvaceous Road claim it's meant to fight off the Toyota Highlander and Ford Edge on these shores — but we've heard it's to be built out of the Toluca, Mexico plant that's currently building PT Cruisers, and that it's meant to fight MPV's from a broad-range of competitors across the pond in Europe. It may be part of the Chrysler Group's plans to fight them over there while making cars that aren't selling over here — or something like that. – Ray Wert More »

I just got off of the phone with a PR staffer from the General, who provided me with a little bit more detail, but by no means the full story, on the General's decision to put a "stop sale" on the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook. According to Lynda Messina, the PR-anista in charge of manufacturing issues for GM's lambda-platformed crossover triplets, the "stop sale" occurred because "a couple of issues cropped up over the past few days...in a test fleet of vehicles." She also claimed the issues are "not safety-related" and "to our knowledge no one has received a vehicle yet...they are only on dealer lots...but I've no idea when they'll be able to start selling." Messina wasn't able to provide any detail on what the specific issues were, but we're told we'll have more information from the General when they see fit to provide it. One assumes it must have been important enough to require them to "maintain momentum" via a halt to sales. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/220889/gms-momentum-maintenance-more-on-the-lambda-platform-stop-sale" title="Click here to read more about GM's Momentum Maintenance: More On The Lambda Platform "Stop Sale"">More »

Dealers received an immediate stop-action communique over the weekend from the home office at the RenCen of the General's decision to immediately halt sales of the two models in its threesome of Lambda-platform CUV's already on the market, the GMC Acadia and the Saturn Outlook. The communique, which appears to have been so hastily written it misspells "Attention," claims the need to stop sales
"...in order to maintain our momentum and successful launch of these products, we are evaluating potential enhancement and inventory upgrade to the vehicles."
Because nothing says "maintaining momentum" like a complete halt. Sure, it looks like someone grafted a Jetta's snout onto a Mazda5. Yes, the "Red Rock" color-scheme being used in the promo-photos screams "Ford Edge!" louder than Alan Mulally. And no, we still do not know why VeeDub has simply refused to build the new Bus concept. However, the people who make the peoples' car will be producing a new crossover called the CrossTouran. In top form, the new European-person hauler features a highly-effing precise 1.4L Twincharger mill that uses a supercharger, a turbocharger and direct injection to kick out 170 horses and hit about 130mph. Based on the Touran van (another VW product the Great Satan don't get) the CrossTouran should go on sale elsewhere in Spring 2007. Euro-surfers rejoice. Also, "Cross" is a new VW brand, just like GTI and/or R. Beware the CrossPolo. A non-Jalopnik member of the press asked Rabid Rick if instead of merging with Carlos "Hot Daughter" Ghosn's lineup, why doesn't GM simply merge with — and save — FoMoCo? Mr. Wagoner literally answered, "We have enough problems. We will not be saving Ford." The General does sound like it's intent on saving Buick. Brand Manager Steve Shannon reassured the assembled autojourno throngs that Buick will soon "be making real Buicks again." He went on to explain that instead of trying to put a car in every garage, they are going to only make four models. Also, instead of concentrating on <s>rental cars</s> fleet sales, Buick will focus on retail customers. Glad to hear they've at least claiming a focus. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/217878/breaking-gm-has-enough-problems-will-not-save-forddid-we-mention-the-buick-enclave" title="Click here to read more about Breaking? The Dearborn-based automaker informed dealers today that the Edge-based recovery of FoMoCo cited by Mark "Movie Star" Fields was going to have to wait just a little bit longer. Joe Hinrichs, FoMoCo's veep for NorAm manufacturing, claims that they're going to need a few more weeks to iron out some "supplier issues." Hinrichs was quick to point out that quality's still job one at FoMoCo, this problem's more about the consistency of the product going out. Umm, wait a second — let's parse that press flack comment. It's not the quality, it's the consistency. So technically it could be the consistency of the quality that's holding things up, right? This makes me feel real good about driving one of those new in-consistent Lincoln MKX's tomorrow. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/215125/breaking-fomoco-tells-dealers-its-pushing-back-launch-of-ford-edge-and-lincoln-mkx" title="Click here to read more about Breaking! Well, number two in the threesome of Lambda-platform CUV's — the General's answer to the Ford Edge / Lincoln MKX — has finally finished getting its makeup ready and is ready for the public. The Saturn Outlook joins its non-identical twin brother, the Acadia, in the ranks of "vehicles with price tags." Yes, we know — sometimes kids need encouragement, so sometimes you have to applaud the little things. In this case, we're applauding a price tag that sets it at a level $2,000 cheaper than its badge-engineered GMC sibling, and more than likely cheaper than Buick's Enclave in the woods. You know, the Outlook was always our favorite. Gallery via the link, full press release after the jump. – Ray Wert More »

Hyundai's released more shots of its Veracruz LUV (for those playing along at home, that's a CUV with leather seats). All pwning aside, the Veracruz looks like a contender in the luxury realm, with headlight washers, LED taillights, and park-assist system. Watchers expect Hyundai's 3.8-liter V6 to be offered along with a 3.0-liter mill in the US. We'll see for reals at the Detroit show. Ford figured out a way for the rest of us to experience a press junket, sorry drive event, without having to make small talk with writers from medium-market newspapers (c'mon, we kid the car-covering newsies from Hartford). This Monday, Ford President of the Americas, <strike>Manuel Noriega</strike>Mark Fields is hosting a webcast and product walkaround of the Edge. If you weren't aware, the Edge is a really big deal for Ford, and it needs to make every exposure count. That's why you should round up all the mommies you know and tell them Oprah and Martha Stewart are giving away free Laura Ashley bedding online. And give them the deets below. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/207232/monday-monday-monday-ford-edge-preview-webcast" title="Click here to read more about Monday! Monday! Monday! I know I'm just about ready to smack the next person that calls a wagon a "CUV." I know it's the new hotness of marketing terms, but there's got to be a better way to define vehicles that clearly aren't sedans and yet, don't quite have that Jeep Grand Cherokee / Hummer / Explorer thing going for them. Yes — the technical definition of a unibody vehicle rather than an SUV built on a body-on-frame truck platform should suffice for most of the off-road wannabes — but I'm sorry Chrysler Pacifica, Subaru Outback and Dodge Magnum — y'all are wagons. Suck it up, take it as a loss, and move on. But, we do empathize with the General, who according to Automotive News, is having a bit of a problem trying to figure out what to call the new class of non-car, non-truck, non-suv vehicles they've got coming out over the next year. That'd be the threesome of the Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. The problem is, the General's already used the CUV classification to describe the Caddy SRX. So let's find out what y'all think. – Ray Wert More »
