UPDATE: The 2009 Nissan Cube's price will start at $13,990 and we've even had a chance to test drive the Cube. Read our impression here.

The Nissan Cube is hoping to capture the boxy chic market the Scion xB pioneered when it goes on sale in the US market next year. We think the Cube has a lot going for it. When it does arrive the funky little 2009 Nissan Cube will sport the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Nissan Versa, good for 122 HP and 127 lb-ft of torque. These will come mated to either Nissan's CVT transmission or a six-speed manual, for those who like to stand out in a crowd and row their own gears. Further differentiating the unique econobox from the rest of the market will be the "water drop" interior accents in the headliner and controls that give the appearance of rippling water. As with the Fit and Scion, the Cube will come loaded with features such as a sliding "sofa style" bench, remote keyless entry, an iPod-ready sound system and standard ABS. Buyers will also be treated to a host of other dealer-added accessories that could help propel the odd wagon into the hearts and homes of budget-conscious-yet-trendy buyers. Full details in the press release below. More »

Tomorrow comes a day too soon in Japan as Nissan has already released a load of pictures of both the USDM and JDM Cube, which is to be "unveiled" tomorrow at the LA Auto Show. This eccentric little box is vying for the same niche as the polarizing Scion xB. Japanese Cubes are powered by a 107 Horsepower, 109 lb-feet Torque 1.5L fourbanger fitted to a CVT transmission. Drive setups include front and all-wheel drive. The configurations coming to the States currently remains unknown. Check back tomorrow for the official US specifications and more photos as they roll in from our guys in the City of Angels. More »

The 2010 Nissan Cube, bound for US sales and an LA Auto Show unveil tomorrow, has been revealed in these pictures of a car transit to somewhere in Japan posted on the Motive Mag forum. The new Cube retains its asymmetrical look while at the same time managing to look a bit sleeker than its predecessor. The grille shrinks a bit and the headlights get a more high tech look. The roof goes from pure flat to a slight curve and the rear of the vehicle retains the same backwards "S" sweeping across the glass from the rear door. We'll be looking for more details tomorrow at the official unveil, but enjoy these pics for now and wait in anticipation for the pending angry washing machine van wars to come.
[Newcar-Network via TTAC via MotiveMag] More »

The preview website for the US-bound Nissan Cube has gone live, complete with a 2010 Ford Mustang-esque long-lead countdown timer. Ninety days out from the LA Auto Show reveal, the website gives us a peek at the Cube's marketing direction, which seems to be a second-year art-school student's wet dream. It's stacked deep with snappy animations, confusing artistic movies, overexposed images and a link to every known social media widget we've ever seen. But what about that free T-shirt? <a href="http://jalopnik.com/5039416/nissan-cube-usa-website-goes-live-complete-with-free-t+shirt-offer" title="Click here to read more about Nissan Cube USA Website Goes Live Complete With "Free" T-Shirt Offer">More »

We've told you about Nissan's new electric concepts. Now the trendy technicians over at Popular Mechanics have actually flown to Japan to drive the electrified Nissan Cube, the EV-02, and lived to tell the story. The lithium-ion battery-powered box on wheels is said to be just the start of Nissan's big li'l electric vehicle efforts, but how does current concept impress? We're all now apparently destined to give up our delightful gas-guzzling luxury boats (again) and dump our super-sized SUVs in favor of wearably small fuel sippers. It seems, thanks to news yesterday that the Dodge Hornet's still in the mix and planning to head stateside, that at least a few automakers are trying to make them interesting, or are at least making them look interesting. Unfortunately none of them are yet here. But of these unbuyable-here (and in a couple of cases, anywhere) econoboxes, we're wondering which ones you're most interested in — hit the jump. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/395883/not+available+here-econobox-shootout-500-vs-hornet-vs-cube" title="Click here to read more about Not-Available-Here Econobox Shootout: 500 Vs. The Nissan Denki Cube Concept is something you've probably already seen. In fact, you probably saw it this morning when we caught the electric Nissan Cube sunning itself in advance of its press conference. What did we learn at the press conference? Fleet-use electric vehicles by 2010 and commercial vehicles by 2012. The big news is that the LA Auto Show this fall will see the introduction of the next generation Cube for the North American market. Press release, pictures of the Denki Cube and shots of two rather unfortunately customized Cubes below. More »

Those press event rehearsals are always causing trouble as us bothersome bloggers just want to see the shiny, so we don't miss a beat. We heard about the Nissan Denki Cube Concept at the last minute, and today we see it with our own one lens. The all-electric anti-symmetry Nissan is outfitted with a trick hidden "fuel door" and the loudest yellow interior you've ever seen. Tweety would feel pale in there. Anyway, we'll bring you more information on the dinky Denki when the event comes around for reals. More »

Nissan is planning on sticking a finger in the eye of every fuel cell and hybrid toting automaker at next weeks' New York Auto Show when they unveil the Nissan Denki Cube. The all-electric Denki is named for the Japanese word for electric and will be trumping the other manufacturers in its earth friendly marketing campaigning. Nissan has already claimed they will bring an EV to market by 2010 and if the Cube is the candidate, we'll welcome it. The ones we saw while abroad during the Tokyo Auto Show were cool as hell and we wouldn't mind seeing something like them stateside, even if they are silent and don't burn dinosaur juice. Ben Hsu over at Japanese Nostalgic Car Magazine has become our pusherman for the weird Japanese stuff we're hooked on around here. Today he's sent in a photo of some Nissan Cubes with truck beds, which one can buy in Japan at Autobacs. According to Señor Hsu: "These were custom built by Autobacs, a Japanese big box retailer where, if you had enough cashish, you could turn your bone stock clapped-out 1989 Nissan 240SX into a full blown D1GP drift machine without ever leaving the store. One-stop shopping at its finest. They also build their own original sports car chassis, the Autobacs Garaiya." The question here is: What do we call a Cube with truck bed? There's a tenuous case for "Cubepage," because Nissan connects to Renault which connects to AMC which connects to Chrysler... but is three degrees of separation close enough? <a href="http://jalopnik.com/357047/cubepage-cubamino-cubechero-you-decide" title="Click here to read more about Cubepage? Turns out Mr. Jeff Winterberg, despite the "murky details," was right about the Nissan Cubes at Pratt. Nissan is having design students hack on the interiors and then present the results at the NY Auto Show in April. But, what he had no way of knowing about was that the Brooks Institute film school in Santa Barbara, CA also has two of the rolling boxes. Why? To "intemperate and communicate the essence of the vehicle," of course. When we were in school we were only asked to intemperate and communicate the essence of Jungian archetypes vis-a-vis Freud's analytical methods while fighting hangovers. Sigh... Full press release from Nissan after the jump. More »

Pssst. You want to know why we love our readers?
In May of 2006 I was at a rest stop off the highway somewhere in between Nagoya and Tokyo, feeding 100 yen coins into a vending machine, trying to get a little die-cast Nissan Cube. It took three or four tries and I still have a few Toyota Vitz (Yaris to you and me) models to prove it. I was so taken with the looks of the Cube that I decided I couldn't leave Japan without at least a tiny, questionably rendered facsimile of one. You can guess my unbridled joy at the news Nissan would be bringing them to the states in 2008.

The Cube is coming to the US. We've been hearing that (and its inverse) for nigh on two years. But if Japan's financial newspaper Nikkei is to be believed, a restyled Cube, along with two additional subcompacts, could hit these shores (and Europe's) as early as 2008. Long the favored hookup spot for Japanese youths, most of whose parents don't have a wood-paneled basement, the Cube will reportedly lead a charge into the lower end of the US car market. A full redesign, which will likely bring the two-box box up to current US crash-test standards, will be revealed next year. Roach clips and Shonen Knife albums, optional. – Mike Spinelli More »

For a longtime, one of our favorite "you can't buy it here" cars has been the Nissan Cube. We've been scratching our heads as to why that is, especially given the success of Honda's Element and Scion's xB. The Cube was boxier than both of 'em, featured an asymmetrical rear-end and well, Nissan's are typically OK rides. However, the Ghosn boys just released some shots of the Cube's replacement, the terribly named Bevel (Angle was apparently copyrighted). We like it. We like all panel van looking cars. Blind spots be damned. Still, if the above is the Bevel, and the Rogue looks like this, what on earth is the white JDM box-mobile Autoblog caught running around LA? Over the weekend, the Autobloggers procured shots of an unidentified, right-drive Japanese vehicle, nabbed on a commercial shoot in downtown Los Angeles. After some deduction, the determination was the box-like utility wagon is neither the next Toyota xB, nor a new Honda Element. So what, pray tell, is this bo

te blanche? How about the next-gen Nissan Cube? AutoWeek reported last year Nissan was weighing the potential for the front-drive Cube in the US market as a Scion competitor. While this car is slightly larger than the current, shagadelic Cube — and sports a new, likely more crashworthy front-end — its rear design work does look strikingly Nissaneque. Anyone? Well, now that we've seen what we can do with Nissan's Cube, we're even more geeked it's gonna be making the jump from Japan in 2008. According to Nihon Car & Bike — where we snagged the bitchin' pics — Nissan's had a vehicle called "CUBE" since 1998, but they've only made a vehicle called Cube with a cubic shape since 2002. And just like Toyota's Scion xB (or Toyota Bb if you're reading this from cross the pond), it's highly customizable — as MonoCraft's shown us with this amazingly pimped-out display of Cube-ism. Check out our bump below, and then head over to Nihon Car & Bike for an eight ball of square cut-out-edness, including some video. We've been waiting for Nissan to pull the trigger on a US-model Cube for long about two years now, and according to AutoWeek it'll happen by 2008 at the earliest. Of course the model that shows up here won't likely be of the same generation as the current, Japan-only five-door model (shown). One product planner with the company says US buyers won't accept the performance of the current model, which is powered by an 88-hp 1.5-liter four — not enough to propel it through a New Jersey headwind at more than a slow walk. The weak engine will stay, he says, which means the US model will need serious lightening and aerodynamic tweaks, which may render the Cube more of a rhomboid by the time it hits these shores. More »

Yeah, yeah. We've been Elemented. We've been xB'd. But we've yet to be Cubed, and the Cube is frankly, for our money, the coolest of the appliance-shaped Japanese econoboxes. Check out the majesty of the assymetrical rear window. It's goofy; it's quirky; it's pure JDM goodness. And it's been spotted with Michigan plates on American roads. Rumors have bounced about for years as to whether the Cube would ever make these shores, and while a redesigned xB's already on the books and in the field, we think Nissan wouldn't be remiss in cubing us up. How 'bout it, Carlos? [Thanks to Chad for the tip.] More »

Nissan sources say the company was most definitely bringing its most square of vehicles, the Cube, to the US as a 2008 model, according to AutoWeek. The Cube will join the Versa, announced last week, among NIssan's growing line of US-bound economy cars. Still, short of a confirmation, the official company line indicates all will be revealed in due time. More »
