Though this doesn't come as a shock to anyone with a brain, it does seem to explain why McCain is getting hosed in the polls lately. His base is shrinking. The financiapocalpyse combined with higher gas prices has meant people moving away from big trucks and towards Corollas and Camrys and Civics (oh my!). The choice of Mustang Grande-driving, big truck-loving Sarah Palin has associated McCain with the largesse of the Bush years. We've already reported the next-generation Explorer will be more car-like, something hinted at with the Ford Explorer America concept shown at Detroit earlier this year. The mule captured by KGP appears to be a mixture of the Ford Flex and Taurus X but with a taller ride-height, higher cowl and a revised A-pillar. The all-wheel-drive micro-UV is obviously wearing the same epilepsy-inducing camouflage BMW has been fond of lately, but you can see the mule bears a great deal of resemblance to the concept. We got a live look at the diminutive soft-roader last week during the show, but these images give you quite a bit more detail, particularly of the laser globe center stack thingamajig. The whole car has kind of a split personality: It's the biggest Mini yet actually appears, from certain angles, more true to the original Mini than the regular version of the car. The Theta platform crossover gets a surprisingly swoopy C-pillar and a very Malibu-like grille, but those headlights offer a more softened approach to the face of Chevrolet. Aside from the new nose and glass, the Equinox is also sporting some rather aggressive, albeit tasteful, fender flares reminiscent of the Mercedes ML. We're not sure exactly what that means, but a smoky two-stroke under a hood made entirely of iron would be appropriate. Kinda]]> Unless we're talking about an AMC Eagle or a Mega Track, we're not huge fans of crossover vehicles. But there's something about this Subaru Exiga that makes it feel acceptable. As we can see from this teaser, the new 7-seater looks to be significantly better looking than the B9 Tribeca. And while it's hard to tell for sure through this shadowy lighting, it seems that the Exiga will be more on the big wagon than the compromised SUV side of the crossover coin. We just hope the flat boxer engine and AWD will uphold Subaru's reputation for making wagons that can tackle twisty tarmac. Photos below the jump. More »

On one side you've got frumpy FWD tall wagons, which have zero off-road capabilities yet manage to be crappy on-road as well. Then on the other side you've got true dual-purpose vehicles, able to impress on a winding tarmac backroad or a lumpy dirt trail. So while some may be duped into thinking a Jeep Compass is the best of both worlds, we'd much prefer this, the Mega Track. It's a supercar that can do whatever it wants to, wherever it wants to. Why, we wouldn't have a small SUV from Volvo to go on about. It's the Volvo XC60, which debuted today in Geneva to adoring crowds of sweater-wearing men in casual shoes. The XC60 is built for "consumers who've grown up with the microchip as a natural supplement to their breakfast cereal." That may be a translation issue, but we've heard of those kids, and pica syndrome is nothing to joke about (you'll get it later). Nonetheless, the XC60 will be powered by Volvo's 285-horsepower T6, and in Europe, a choice of two five-cylinder turbodiesels. Expect nearly half of the expected 50,000 XC60 to be built to show up in the US. Watch for them lined up outside a Montessori school near you. More »

We guess they're hoping to expand their narrow offerings and fill that huge hole between the RAV-4, Matrix and Highlander. The new vehicle will be "a unique blend of sedan and sport utility vehicle." Unique? The new Toyota will offer seating for five, a car-like ride and will have some sort of functional utility (err... AWD?). The 2009 Toyota Venza will be built in the Georgetown, Kentucky plant, which currently produces the Camry, Avalon and Solara. We have no spy photos or teases for you, though we'll throw out the FT SX concept from the 2005 Detroit Auto Show as a possible spiritual heir and maybe a replacement for the Highlander.
