Chrysler will unveil the new Euro-spec Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0-liter Common Rail Diesel (CRD) engine at this year's Geneva Motor Show. They'll likely also show off the new Chrysler 300. Sadly, we're only getting the latter. More »

We've been saying for years the only efficient hybrid with current technology is one mated to a diesel engine, and now it looks like another automaker is jumping into the conceptual fray. Our little news yesterday on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5 — translated from Bruce, that appears to be an X5 outfitted with a 2.0-liter twin turbo common rail diesel mild hybrid (wow, that's a mouthful, ain't it?) — appears to be wholly true. BMW will be revealing this little concept in environmentally friendly CUV-ing at the Geneva Motor Show next month and they've now seen fit to reveal the rest of their press shots and the full press release, which we've got below the jump. Feel free to read through it if you're suffering from a strong desire to fall back into bed. For now, here's the gist of it — hybrid + diesel + BMW = Over 100 HP per liter (total of 204 HP), 295 lb-ft of torque between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Exciting, isn't it? More »

Our friends from the D over at How Bourgeois were out tooling about when they happened upon something we've not yet seen stateside, but have heard rumors of for almost a year now — a CRD Jeep Commander. So what do we think — is this manny-plated SUV a harbinger of the German-American hybrid shipping over a 3.0-liter CRD V6? The picture they've snapped seems to indicate that's the case. And how much longer will we be waiting until we see the Commander's Durango-platformed brethren fitted with a 3.0-liter CRD? Take a look at the spotting in full size via the link below. More »

If it's the New York Auto Show, it must be time for new Jeeps. For some odd reason the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid has found New York's the place to show off their new rock-crawlers — last year showing off the new Jeep Patriot and the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This year the boys n' girls from <strike>Stuttgart</strike> Auburn Hills have so far unveiled the new 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. And let's just say — it's amazingly similar to the old one. Except for like, one big difference. This year, the GC is going diesel and it's going low-end on the V8. That's right, the news on the Grand is the addition of the 3.0-liter common rail diesel V6 engine available on the Limited and the Overland and the addition of an all-new 4.7-literV8 engine which becomes the new standard on the Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. We're just happy to hear the SRT8 still gets the 6.1-liter HEMI. Everything else is really just butter. Full press release after the jump. – Ray Wert More »

What's this familiar SUV spotted way the hell up in northern Scandinavia, near the Norwegian border? According to those familiar three letters, it's the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the CRD Diesel engine. That's the Benz-built 3.0-liter diesel, producing 215 hp and 376 lb.-ft. torque. Chrysler announced last month the current CRD-powered model will have an MSRP of $38,475. According to spies, some bumper tweaks and seven-spoke wheels indicate this is the 2008 model, which will get a minor facelift over the current Grand Cherokee. Let's just hope they're not using the oil burner to smoke salmon for export. – Mike Spinelli More »

If there's anything like consensus among Jeep fans, it's that a CRD version is long overdue. Sure, you can get all the 2.8-liter, common-rail turbo-diesel Jeeps you want, so long as you're outside US airspace. We know the day will come when the new smoggers arrive on these shores, but is that day near? Do these shots, seen on GreatLakes4x4.com indicate Jeep's ready to pull the trigger (and hey, is that green one a Gladiator pickup in disguise) ? Well, not exactly. These are most likely military vehicles built for export. Back into the waiting room with you, scalliwags! – Mike Spinelli More »

Despite having doubled its original sales target, Jeep's Liberty CRD will soon be gone like Flynn (well, times change). Blame it on stricter emissions standards going into effect on 2007 that'll render its VM Motori-built 2.8-liter four unusable in the US market. Considering the company just announced its Grand Cherokee will be fitted with a common-rail diesel mill from DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes stable, the Liberty move doesn't mean the company's diesel experiment failed. Well, it kind of does. Chrysler's Jeep reportedly won't be building a new, cleaner-burning diesel Liberty due to cost issues. Bean counting 101. More »

We knew it would happen (seriously, we did know). Jeep announced today it will offer its Grand Cherokee in delicious diesel flavor. In fact, it'll be Mercedes-Benz's 3.0-liter CRD (common-rail) turbodiesel burner the Europeans have been privy to that will power the SUV in the US. The Chrysler kids are talking about a 30% increase in fuel economy (over the deepest-sipping V8) from the mill, which produces 215 hp at 3800 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. torque waaay lowdown in the 1600-2800 rpm range — with estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city / 23 mpg highway. It'll be available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited and Overland models. Speaking of Europeans, one of these little numbers blew by us on the autostrada in Italy last month — notwithstanding that such a pedal-down maneuver probably cost him about five bucks in fuel. Still, we're totally ready for diesels over here. More »
