The closest we've ever gotten to driving a Corsa in the states is the older and larger Saturn Astra, which sold poorly in the U.S. and never offered more than a low-power 1.8-liter fourbanger. Therefore it's with great sadness we announce the smaller Euro-spec Vauhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition boosts power to over 200 horses from its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine and adds a multi-plate LSD. More »

Geneva Motor Show is coming up in March and there will be plenty of new cars from European makers, many of which will be compact and rather blah. Having a vehicle that looks too plastic-y is never a good thing, but the latest and advanced plastic manufacturers like Borealis and Sabic are looking to the auto-world to help further their cause of plastic. Borealis is using the Fiat 500 as its test vehicle for TPO. TPO is polypropylene-based Daplen thermoplastic olefins, whatever the hell that means. It really just translates to plastic that is very scratch resistant and has the ability to achieve uniform thickness. Opel is getting in on the high-tech plastic game, as well. More »

Let's say you're in South Africa and you just can't get your hands on a good vintage 1956 Mercedes-Benzamino (or, in the local parlance, a Mercedes-Benz Bakkie). Fortunately, The General sells a Gamma-platform-based bakkie known as the Opel Corsa Utility. Sure, it's front-wheel-drive, but it's a factory-built car with a truck bed nonetheless. Thanks to Franzouse for the tip! [GM South Africa] More »

Looks like the General's bringing the big guns out at their "GM Style" pre-Detroit Auto Show party. That's right, they'll be bringing the "racing inspired" Hummer H3R concept — that's the LS7 7.0-liter V8-powered concept first seen at the SEMA show in October — and the Opel Corsa OPC hot-hatch right up on stage at the show before the big show. Also, Maroon 5 will be joining the already announced Mary J. Now don't go confusing this '85 Vauxhall Nova with the '85 Chevrolet Nova; even though both were sold by The General, one was a rebadged Opel Corsa and the other a rebadged Toyota Corolla. But more important than the distinction between different Novas is the fact that we have have stumbled upon The Worst Rap of All Time, with lines like "It's got a punch, honeybunch/So take it out to lunch!" Not only that, we have a contender to take the Most Eighties Car Commercial Award away from the Rob Halford '85 Camaro ad! <a href="http://jalopnik.com/327272/its-got-ooh-its-got-aah-its-the-coolest-car-by-far" title="Click here to read more about It's Got Ooh! Opel says it's plotting to show a hybrid version of its Corsa subcompact at the Frankfurt show, defying all those clean diesels who think so highly of themselves. The company says the comabination of a 1.3-liter gas engine and part-time electric motor add up to 62 miles per gallon US. That while spewing a mere 99 grams of C02 per kilometer. The concept Corsa also has such de rigeur hybrid features as stop-start. No word on whether the VW Polo BlueMotion has told all its friends the Corsa puts erasers up its nose. More »

If you've got Krugerrands enough to give King Midas a case of the wobblies, and you want a GT1 racecar to take shopping, call Edo Competition. Never one to shrink from a high-buck project, Edo created a tuner version of the Maserati MC12 Corsa. That's the $1.7 million, track-only version of Maserati's Enzo-based halo GT car built for homologation's sake, the lightweight Maserati MC12 Corsa. Edo's futzed with the suspension, exhaust and braking systems, applied a new tire and wheel package, and says it's getting approval for its Corsa to be street legal. Sure it'll be awesome, as such reckless disregard for convention sometimes is, though Maserati purists will likely tape pictures of the Halloween-orange racer to their dart boards. More »

The Ultra Van crowns itself as the world's largest production Corvair by way of an aluminum and fiberglass monococque shell wrapped around a Corvair transaxle. As the Ultra Van itself was conceived by aircraft designer David Peterson, the biggest Corvair is more like an aluminum airplane wing in the round than a conventional body-on-frame RV. Only about 370 Ultra Vans were ever produced. 250 of them still roam the roads. The Ultra Van is affectionately known among club members as the whale. This nickname sprang from truckers overheard on a CB radio referring to a caravan of the World's Largest Corvairs as funny little white whales on wheels. Ultra Van, ahoy! Fudgie the whale is still hanging out at your participating Carvel ice cream store. – Mike Bumbeck More »

A small but dedicated group of Corvair owners met at our favorite Burbank bookstore this last Saturday morning for some rear engine togetherness. Among the examples attending were a Corvair powered by a Buick V-8, and a '69 Glass Enterprises Bounty Hunter Corvair-powered Dune Buggy. Our attention was divided between the factory stock draw-through turbo equipped '66 Corsa, the fully equipped Greenbrier van, and the die-cast Fiat 500 in the bookstore. – Mike Bumbeck More »

Have you ever found a parking ticket on your car and suspected that it was actually moved by a mysterious force? That's apparently what happened when Lisa Williams, of Wolverhampton, found her little blue Opel parked across the double yellow lines. It turns out, road workers not only picked up her car and set it down illegally (not in a good way, like the lovable Foo Fighters above), they also dented it in the process. The workers have been forced to compensate the woman and apologize for their mistake. Proof once again that you should never mess with a Wolverhamptonian. – Matt Hardigree More »

Earlier this year, we got a glimpse of the new hot mini-hatch in the way from the General's Teutonic outpost at Opel. Now, the company's revealed the Corsa OPC, the latest Opel (oh sorry, blokes, and Vauxhall too, as the VXR) to be so lettered. As a hot hatch, the Corsa has all expected accouterments, including 192 hp from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four and and a listed zero-to-60 time of 7.2 seconds — specs competitive with similar Peugeots and Seats of the genre. What's more, an "overboost" function provides a temporary torque upswing (hyperspace?) from 170 lb-ft to 191. If we were betting sorts, we'd lay odds this Corsa will never hit the states as a Saturn, like so many other Opels (and, soon, the base Corsa) have. But hope springs eternal, unlike some half-in-the-bag conventioneer's cash-advance card at the Sahara. – Mike Spinelli More »

Although gas prices have dropped over recent weeks, every analyst worth his or her weight in Saudi riyals think the cost of fuel's going nowhere but up. And the automakers, especially the domestics, have seen a major flight to small cars with high mpg and low price tags...but also with a correspondingly low margin. But since the engineering staff at the traditional "Big Three" has been kind of busy building big rough and tumble SUV's and trucks, there hasn't been much of late in the US product pipeline to drop into production to satisfy demand. That's where other holdings, like GM's Opel brand come in. They're the new Saturn, you know...and according to Maximum Bob Lutz (care of Automotive News) they've got a teeny little hot hatch called the Corsa that'd fit right into Saturn's lineup. Great, problem solved, right? Yeah, except for Lutz also saying it won't be coming over for five years. D'oh!
Intro The New GM Media Strategy: CEO Rick Wagoner Waxes On The Opel Corsa, Renault-Nissan

Initially we believed — and frankly many GM PR staff seemed to confirm — the General's strategy for the next 90 days was going to be "Get Rick the hell away from cameras." However, we now think we were a bit hasty in snapping to that assessment. Exhibit A would be the above announcement for the Opel Corsa. Normally, although we're excited about the new Opel Corsa, we probably wouldn't be covering the unveiling out in swinging London with two videos. But — because we got our hands on some lovely footage of Rick here waxing on alliances of all kinds — we also end up talking about the Opel Corsa again. Not a bad deal for GM — they get to talk about their new Euro hatch, while adding nothing new to the Renault-Nissan alliance discussion narratives. Well played, sirs...well played. Now if only they could get Wagoner to say something about the Corsa other than the fact he fits in it. More »

With GM tagging several Opel models as Saturns, the "what's next" speculation is running high. Will GM transform Saturn into a one-to-one Opel doppelganger — even going so far as to bring over this new Corsa OPC hot hatch, caught recently on the N

rburgring, to the US as an entry performance subcompact? Survey says, nein! GM's smallest-car strategy in the US has been a function of its Korean GM-Daewoo division, making such a prospect unlikely. Still, a German-built performance hatchback might go over pretty well in the states. Ask your Fast. [Thanks to Daniel for the tip.] More »

One of the Gawkerettes, much to our considerable and unrelenting jealousy, spent Sunday in Monaco checking out the Grand Prix (go, go Alonso) from a yacht in the Mediterranean. While there, she (by the grace of Bill the parking attendant) captured a shot of the just-revealed Maserati MC12 Corsa — the track-only, limited-edition version of the Enzo-based MC12 — as it sat waiting for, well, we're not exactly sure what. Special thanks go to Mark Cumming of for use of the phone cam. More »

Loyal Maserati owners stood by and watched as loyal (and super-rich) Ferrari customers ponied up their Amex Centurion cards for one of a few special Enzo Fxx models. Considering the Maserati MC12 is based on the Enzo, it'd seem logical that the Prancing Horse's bretheren would get a similar limited-edition ultra-supercar. That day is nigh. It's the MC12 Corsa, and it's way beyond exclusive (only 12 will be built). Like the Fxx, the 757-horsepower Corsa won't be street legal, meaning it's merely a $1.2 million toy for track days. Really expensive track days. More »

GM just revealed the three-door version of its redesigned Opel/Vauxhall Corsa subcompact, which the company plans to unveil at the British International Motor Show in July. The Spain-built minicar will be offered in Europe with a range of engines, including 1.0-liter, 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter mills, and CDTi turbodiesels in 1.3-liter and 1.7-liter trim. Could the Corsa make it across the pond as one of those Opelesque Saturn models we keep hearing about? GM may have paid Fiat a balance of billionz to end the companies' alliance, but products of that alliance live on. Take, for example this new Opel Corsa, which will appear next year in the European subcompact market. The new Corsa shares underpinnings with Fiat's hot-selling 2006 Grande Punto. Now under the domain of GM-Daewoo, that Gamma platform (whispers, whispers) could show up in the US as a new, small Chevrolet. Nonetheless, Europeans will get a wide range of powerplants, including a 1.6-liter turbocharged mill that could make the Corsa a viable competitor to the Peugeot 207 GTI. Hmm, did someone say Aveo SS? More »
