We've always had a love/hate relationship with the Bentley Continental GT. On the one hand, it's a staggeringly powerful freight train of a car that will do everything but powder your behind (and not catch on fire). On the other hand, it just doesn't have the character of a Bentley; it seems more noveau riche than old-world land-rocket. What better way to address that issue than for ASI Tetsu to add gaudy gold paint, flowery hood graphics, a big spoiler on the trunk and a body kit? Oh and another 248 HP for a grand total of 800. Having had its way with Italian cars, Zagato's coachworks business returned its attentions to a British-German hooligan — the Bentley Continental GT. (Remember the Zagato Aston DB7? Sure you do.) What they came up with is the two-tone Bentley GTZ Zagato we first showed you last week. As is their wont, Zagato made the Bent more curvilinear, with wide arcs where its blocky haunches used to be. It's the first bentley to hit 200 miles per hour (202 mph, to be exact) right off the shelf. It's a pretty big shelf, though, because the Bentley Speed GT is a bruiser of a car. It packs a more-than-sufficient 600 horses lolling beneath its bonnet, also making it the most powerful production Bentley ever built. LEW Design's motto is the "all imaginable is practicable." Teutonic homeoteleutons aside, the company's tuner Bentley Continental GT splits the difference between the Bugatti Veyron and its smaller, less-demonstrative cousin, mainly by way of custom grillwork. It also gets a 100 hp boost to 650 hp, inching the Bent ever closer to the Veyron's near quad-digit power number. We wannabe upper crusty anglophile types are already busy drooling over the allure from the double-decadent Havana coupe. Now Bentley springs this on us? As the revitalized German British marquee nears the brand-imploding 9,000 cars a year threshold, they are going to need new steel to maintain their momentum. Wait, not steel — as was dictated by sharing a chassis with brother Phaeton — Al-you-min-e-um. The new Continentals will use Audi's lightweight MLB platform, probably shedding half a ton in the process. Much more interesting (says me), is the likelihood of low volume offshoots, including a four-door drop-top, a sedanca and most wonderful of all, a shooting brake! We're not sure if they can turn the world on with a smile or not, but MTM knows how to heat up their German-British mates. With their latest tuning kit for the Bentley Continental GT, the MTMers created the fastest Bentley ever, with a top speed of 205 mph recorded on Italy's Nardo test track. All that speediness comes from a set of mods that bring the stock Continental's W12 up to 650 bhp, up from the standard 560 hp, by way of an elegant combination of recalibrated engine management software and a custom exhaust system. They also hacked the suspension computer to match the upclocked performance and shod the GT with 21" alloys. Zero to 60 mph is accomplished in 4.2 seconds (down from 4.8 stock). More »
