Any one Citroen more hellish than one Alfa,
4 is far worse than 3
Open field with rainy Oregon bonus points versus the cocoons...

Andre wins again!

<![CDATA[Murph commented on What Cars Do Automakers Need To Atone For On This Yom Kippur?]]> * Ford: for letting the RWD sedan platform age into oblivion

* GM:for turning the Malibu into a Saab and letting the Saab turn to generic mediocrity (as opposed to its former standard: quirky non-quite mediocrity)

* Chrysler: for not doing anything right

* Honda: for dropping the ball on hybrids after the brilliant start with the original insight

* Toyota: investing in the new Tundra/Sequoia line

* Nissan-Renault: for a lack of courage demonstrated by not bringing real Renaults back into the US market.

* BMW: Bangle, iDrive and Rolls Royce.

* Mercedes: Not bringing a C class diesel to the US

* Volkswagen: letting poor reliability and terrible service standards at dealerships destroy the image of the brand, and while we are at it taking like nine years after new models are introduced in Europe to get them over here.

* Mitsubishi: for making vehicles that will not last over 100K miles

* Hyundai: for letting individual focus groups design each component of the car, with no integration and no design professionals in charge.

<![CDATA[Murph commented on Bonus QOTD: Would You Consider Buying A New Car Now?]]> In the DC area, VW dealers have the new TDI in stock, or you can march over to your local Honda dealer and get a Fit this afternoon.

I figured these two cars would be sold out for the next several months, but I, like lots of others, figured wrong.

I am in the market, kinda. We've got a 2002 Mini Cooper S as the daily driver and we are getting tired of the rough drive on our unmaintained streets. The way tax collection in going, it will be a while until that smooths out.

<![CDATA[Murph commented on PCH, Post-Apocalyptic Cult Leader Ride Edition: Rolls-Royce or Bentley?]]> Real Bentley, even with a RR grill, beats a fake RR.

Besides, the scrap price of aluminum (actually, for a Bentley that would be aluminium) is about $2K a ton, while the scrap value of steel is like $400. So the Bentley is a winner here as well.

Bentley 2, RR 0.

<![CDATA[Murph commented on Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: $41,000 1986 Volkswagen Syncro Westfalia Weekender?]]> Its not, as suggested, two orders of magnitude off. Or even one. This is a screen shot I took today of gowest.com, a California joint that has been referenced earlier by a couple of Jalops:

All things being equal, top price goes for Syncro Westfalias, the full campers with stove, running water and fridge. Full blown upgraded restorations can approach $100K as you can see.

That said, this one is a weekender with no kitchen module, and most of the early syncros lacked nicieties for the trail like diff locks. Super clean, though, this is more likely a $15K vehicle.

The only thing I did not see is them rejetting the carbs to get through the mountains. My junior college TR3 (not an A) would start fouling plugs as soon as it got higher than 5K.

As they say on the beach, Awesome. Congrats.

<![CDATA[Murph commented on PCH, V8 Imports You Should Totally Run At LeMons Edition: Porsche 928 or Lexus LS400?]]> That 928 has the malaise era 219 hp engine, odds are with the popular and worthless three speed automatic. Its likely the least desirable year, and there are hulks laying around everywhere: ebay may not be the asset you expect. The only plus is that its not as electronics dependent as later 928s, these puppies enjoyed luxuries like vacuum based central locking.

The Lexus still has a following, and it certainly ran much more recently than the 928, so you've got a better shot at the whole scheme. Its electronics are complex

All in all the 928 is the better hell, the Lexus will -or at least give you a vague chance - get you the win at Thunderhill.

You can get the sedan with a manual too. From the press release:
"Yaris Sedan model pricing ranges from $12,965 for the Base grade with four cylinder engine and manual five-speed transmission to..."

The manual gets a 1mpg boost combined, too. So you could have a fun five door and marginally better economy.

What are these folks thinking?

<![CDATA[Murph commented on 2009 Chrysler Aspen And Dodge Durango Hybrids Begin Production]]> "Employee" pricing and a $5K rebate have knocked 20% off the price of the Tahoe Decalomania Special Hybrid. It gets 20/20, so even a tad better mileage than the Durango.

But more to the point, Who needs these things anyway? The only real payoff is in city use...doesn't look like an urban assault vehicle to me.

<![CDATA[Murph commented on GM "Employee Pricing For Everyone" Starts Wednesday]]> Seriously folks, how does this work? Is the pricing essentially barebones dealer cost - invoice minus the holdback?

If its something like that, I am sure the dealer isn't eating it, so do they get some additional money, essentially reducing the invoice cost?

Betcha the 2009 Malibu 4cyl with the six speed auto will not be on the list.

]]>
<![CDATA[Murph commented on Nobody Seems To Want To Buy Hummer]]> I thought someone could repurpose this brand and make it an alternative to Jeep, with enough power the H3 could be a decent off road vehicle, and it could use the dual mode/ 27 decal hybrid system from the Tahoe.

The brand, however, has become a joke, and an international one at that. Its dead.

What I want to know is what happens to all those dealers that were forced by GM to build the giant Quonset hut style dealerships? Turn them into local Aerocar factories, or what?
