<![CDATA[Comments from GatoRat]]> <![CDATA[Comments from GatoRat]]> <![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Ford "Nanny Key" For Teen Drivers Limits Vehicle Speed, Radio Volume]]> The car I drove as a teenager had all these features thirty years ago! It was called the Volkswagon Beetle. Topped out at about 70. Going downhill. Above 60 it would start to shake. It had no stereo; just an AM radio that barely worked.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on James May Disagrees With Telegraph Readers, Says '49 Triumph Mayflower Is Ugliest Car Ever]]> The Aston Martin Bulldog is pretty damn ugly.

I don't understand how some of the cars got on the list. They may be crappy cars, but they aren't ugly in the "fell out of an ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down" ugly.

(The Aztec is ugly in the way that when you see one you keep staring at it wondering if your eyes are playing tricks on you and marveling that someone deliberately designed and built that atrocity.)

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on IndyCar Series To Drop Cylinders, Add Turbos For 2011]]> Considering that F1, NASCAR, IRL, etc. are all going to spec cars, how about a series with no limits except that the car has use a spec driver compartment and fit into a box of a certain size. (Okay, no razor blades that come out of the axles to chew up the opponents car.)

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on 2009 Dodge Ram, Reviewed]]> I also wonder where the column shifter is. The center console chews up a lot of room and the shifter gets in the way of everything useful in the front of the console.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Danica Patrick, Milka Duno In Towel-Snapping Cat Fight At Mid-Ohio]]> This highlights a silliness in motor sports; if you are more than a certain percentage off the pace or so many laps down, you should simply be booted for safety reasons. Duno is a very admirable woman, but the powers that be are giving her too much latitude causing a dangerous situation. (Patrick is an okay driver, but until she starts winning races [note the plural], she should keep her mouth shut.)

(I'm mystified why NASCAR lets loser cars continue driving. If someone is twenty laps down, don't let them back on the track--there's already too many idiots out there to have one more.)

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Video Proof Of The 2009 Corvette ZR1s 7:26.4 Nurburgring Lap]]> Ring in the state? Are you kidding? Can you imagine the liability? No matter how many papers a driver signed, he'd bruise his knee, sue the track and win.

Lawyers and whiners are destroying all the fun.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Polling Confirms Americans Will Not Drive 55, Also They Don't Understand Energy Policy]]> ANWAR drilling site sits on crap land sources:

One source

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Polling Confirms Americans Will Not Drive 55, Also They Don't Understand Energy Policy]]> what's the downside of alternate energy?

Wind is inconsistent and requires a lot more land than many people account for.

Ethanol drives up the cost of food and uses good arable land. It uses almost as much energy to create as it provides. (Why butenol gets short shrift is weird.)

Solar doesn't actually provide as much energy as people realize and doesn't work at night.

Hydrogen takes more energy to produce than it provides (and fuel cells aren't nearly as efficient as is often claimed.)

Yeah, all of these should be developed, but they aren't going to replace oil, coal, nuclear and hydroelectric as the primary sources of energy.

We also shouldn't ignore alternate ways to obtain diesel and gasoline, such as coal gasification and algae.

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Polling Confirms Americans Will Not Drive 55, Also They Don't Understand Energy Policy]]> One problem with "most economists" projects is that they are looking at only a single well or a cluster of wells. They also ignore other resources, like oil shale and coal gasification, that have effectively been locked up by congress. Added all together, this creates a strong indicator that new reserves will come on line. In turn this will create uncertainty in the futures markets and will have downward pressure in the spot market (recent studies have found the correlation between futures and spot markets stronger than previously estimated.)

Interestingly using just coal gasification, the US could become gas independent. One possibility would be for the US to NOT put oil from some domestic sources on the open market. Will piss a lot of people off though...

Not on ANWAR: the place they want to drill is crap land. It is not the Alaska you see in National Geographic. Even most the natives there think it's shit land.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on What Should The National Speed Limit Be?]]> Incidentally, anyone proposing a 55 mph national speed limit should be forced to drive I-80 in Nevada or Wyoming, I-10 just about everywhere, I-15 from St. George to LA (except Vegas), I-5 down California or I-8 (Southern Arizona through Yuma to San Diego.)

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on What Should The National Speed Limit Be?]]> My 1999 Honda Civic gets better gas mileage at 70 mph than at 55 mph. I commute 35 miles each way and generally have only one slow spot in each direction. My six week rolling average is now just over 40 mpg.

That said, even if I got 30 mpg at 70 mph, I'd be willing to pay the extra cost.

RE: Accidents

During my commute, I've noticed that the biggest causes of accidents are the "commuter" lane, specific on-ramps and cops. All three cause traffic to slow and/or merge.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on The Future Is Back: Jalopnik Drives The DeLorean DMC-12]]> At college in the early 1980s, I'd pass one on the way to one of my classes. It looked like crap closeup. Every ding, scratch, aberration on the body was glaring. I was quite disappointed.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on NHRA Shortens Track After Fatal Crash, No Longer 1/4-Mile]]> Why not just reduce the track to 100 feet? And remove the driver. Also, put a huge pin in the front of the car and a slot and magnets. To prevent spectators from behind hurt, there should be a one mile zone around the track.

Most motorsports are turning into competition between weenies. Just try reading the whining of several Formula One drivers.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Pit Row Crash Knocks Raikkonen, Hamilton Out Of Canadian Grand Prix]]> Concerning the announcers; I agree that the banter can get silly, but face, not a whole lot is going on most the time. At least we didn't have to listen to Derek Daly.

RE Lewis vs. Kimi: Amateur mistake by Lewis--I actually think he should have gotten a one race suspension--though some blame MUST go to the folks on the radio who should have reminded Lewis that the pit lane exit was closed.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on 1987 Porsche 944S]]> In 1985, I briefly worked for a guy that had a 944. I'd always loved the look of the 944. However, when I finally drove with him in the car, I found out it was a piece of junk. It was falling apart. Even he admitted it was a lemon.

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Are Hybrids Bunk?]]> I average 38 MPG in my 99 Civic (95% of my miles are highway commuter miles.) If Honda made the Civic two feet shorter, 500 pounds lighter and changed the engine to a 1.3L, how much of a mileage boost would that be?

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on 1979 Honda Civic]]> Make it red, and that's the first car I personally bought (my brother and I together previously owned a horrible FIAT.) I loved that car and still do, in spite of the weird dash. I bought it in 1984. Someone hit me from behind in LA a year later and totaled it. I now own a 1999 silver Civic, but it just isn't the same.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on 2008 Smart ForTwo IIHS Crash Test Results In, Little Tyke Did "Good"]]> I too am baffled by the low gas mileage with these cars. I average 39 MPG on the highway (I commute on highways) with my 99 Civic. Just over ten years ago, a friend of mine had a jelly-bean Geo Metro in which he got 50-60 MPG.

I'd buy one of these and look like a dork if it was $14,000 and matched the performance of the Geo Metro.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on '78 Civic Fits Four Shopping Bags, Will Fit In '08 Civic's Glovebox]]> I had a 79 red Civic CVCC. It is still my favorite car. (Unfortunately, someone hit me from behind a year after I bought it in 1985 and had it almost totally fixed up.)

I now own a 99 Civic. Nice, but not as fun as that 79. I will say it's more reliable though.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on The Denver Iron Keeps Coming: Early Datsun 240Z]]> Still one of my favorite cars. By the 280Z and especially the ZX, they had totally ruined the sublime beauty of the original design.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on The Solution To Truck-Related Wind Drag: Box Fans!]]> I think this is hogwash. I work for a company that works with the trucking industry, especially long haul fleets. <![CDATA[GatoRat commented on New Knight Rider TV Show To Be Officially Live-Blogged By Alex Nunez, Lesbian Surfers Rejoice]]> I hated the show when it was originally on and nothing in the first hour of the movie persuaded me that I was somehow wrong to continue my loathing.

]]>
<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on BMW, Mercedes Embarrassed By Nazi Orgy]]> Who cares what Max really did or why, just as long as he's fired. Mosley has done more to ruin Formula One than anyone. I suspect the GPMA manufacturers now regret now going ahead with the split.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Jay Leno On Top Gear America: I Hope We Don't Ruin It]]> I agree that Jeremy Clarkson is Top Gear. Without him, I just wouldn't watch it. You need a cranky, outspoken host who is a car nut.

<![CDATA[GatoRat commented on Troy Critchley Charged With Homicide In Tennessee Drag Racing Incident]]> Critchley knew how dangerous his activity was, could plainly see that no safety precautions had been taken and proceeded with it anyway. (As someone else said, I do think the promoter and city share culpability here. Very simple, common sense precautions would have reduced or prevented the carnage.)
