TD Bank Buys Chrysler Financial From Cerberus

Toronto-based TD Bank will purchase Chrysler Financial for $6.3 billion. Despite being named Chrysler Financial, the company is no longer owned by the automaker, but held by former owner and destroyer of worlds — Cerberus. If you do the math, Cerberus paid $7.4 billion for 80% of Chrysler, then easily shed it in the bankruptcy/bailout, kept the finance arm, and just sold that for almost the price they paid for the whole thing in the first place. On top of yesterday's news Chrysler plans to shut down the Delaware SUV plant that makes the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen a year early is news this morning the automaker plans to cut 25% of their 18,500 white collar staff starting next month. In his memo to staff announcing the cuts, Chrysler CEO Bob "The Builder" Nardelli outlined the Cerberus-owned company's need to deal with these "unimaginable times" — which we've determined is another way of saying "Financiapocalypse" — as the reason for the cuts. Nardelli also outlined a need to cut discretionary and overhead expenses and reduce capital expenditures not related to major products. Hmm, all of this sounds eerily similar to the rumors we heard last week. Well, the job losses part anyway. Full text of the note from "Bob" after the jump. Seriously, that's how he signed it — "Bob." Seriously, we can't make this stuff up. More »

The WSJ reports today (via Automotive News) Cerberus and GM are moving full-steam-ahead in their efforts to get a GM-Chrysler deal done by the end of October. Today also brings news Renault may have their hand in the cookie jar too, negotiating for one or more parts of Chrysler and leading to speculation the Auburn Hills, MI-based automaker could be divvied up among several companies: Basically the worst-case scenario envisioned when Cerberus Capital Management took over in 2007. Finally, we've got an unsubstantiated rumor engineering employees at Chrysler may be getting two months off sans pay beginning...drumroll please...November 1st. Coincidence? Maybe. Also, David Faber of CNBC had a chance to sit down with ChryslerCo CEO, Bob "The Builder" Nardelli; while we haven't had a chance to run through it in its entirety, hit the jump for the a full transcript of the CNBC interview with Nardelli. UPDATE: We now hear from a Chrysler source that rumors of an engineering furlough are not true; that's why we call them "rumors." More »

The Financiapocalypse continues. We just received a copy of an e-mail that went out at GMAC, the lending arm jointly owned by GM and Cerberus, from Barbara Stokel, GMAC's EVP of North American Operations. Here's the most salient detail: you'll now need a minimum 700 credit bureau score to get a car loan at dealer invoice or below from GMAC. The full e-mail is below the jump to explain that news as well as the news they'll be restricting approval of contract terms beyond 60 months unless a buyer qualifies for GM-supported 72-month incentives. So what does this means to you? Well, unless you've got above average credit, it's going to become much more difficult to buy a new car. Frankly, that's probably a good thing for consumers. It's probably a bad thing for GM sales numbers. More »

If terms are agreed upon, the sale would mark the end of Daimler's involvement in the Auburn Hills automaker a mere ten years after embarking upon its much ballyhooed "merger of equals." The two companies are mum on the price Daimler hopes to get for its stake in Chrysler, but we'll bet it's worth at least $105 million less than it used to be. While we've previously reported on the Chrysler/Nissan small-car/pickup-truck mind meld, the Wall Street Journal now says the two companies are discussing collaboration on a mid-size vehicle platform. The report states that the agreement currently under consideration would have Nissan building mid-size sedans that Chrysler would then market under its own nameplate in the US. There's no specific mention of a platform or nameplate likely to be used, but it's not hard to speculate that the much-maligned Sebring could be replaced by the end result of such a collaboration. More »

The Detroit News reports today on the marriage of Chrysler and Cerberus Capital Management, which took place one year ago this week. Robert Nardelli, former head of Home Depot, beat out Tom LaSorda and Wolfgang Bernhard for the top job at the new Chrysler, joining an already troubled automaker just at the edge of what would become the country's worst auto sales period in 20 years. What the hell was he thinking? More importantly, what's he thinking now? A Chryslerberus freshman report card after the jump. More »

Chrysler July sales dropped below the 100,000 unit mark as consumers began to show signs that they've lost confidence in the company, reports Automotive News. While Chrysler's announcement that it would suspend leasing August 1 caused a last-minute flurry of shoppers, more ominous was a report by Complete.com that Chrysler's June "shopper count," its number of online product inquiries on major automotive Web sites, fell to the company's second-lowest on record. Hmm; loss of customer interest and no leases. The Jeep Compass (the Jeep MK platform for the ladies) and Patriot (the Jeep MK platform for the boys) will be getting revised interiors with softer lines for 2009, according to a first look at some Mopar dealer catalogs scanned by the Chrysler forum fan-boys at Allpar. Gone are most of the hard-edged "plastic box" features that made up the first-gen mini-Jeeps, replaced by a more fluid-looking motif still using the same basic layout. According to Automotive News, Cerberus is engaged in behind-the-scenes talks with both Tata Motors and Fiat regarding sales and manufacturing linkups. Chrysler wants to use Tata to gain a foothold for its Jeep Wrangler in Indian and Asian markets. More intriguingly, the company is reportedly talking to Fiat about the Italian automaker leasing excess Chrysler production capacity in the U.S. and "cooperating in retail distribution in the U.S. market." Will this mark the return of Fiat to our shores, via Chrysler? More »

Come Halloween, Chrysler will idle its St. Louis South minivan plant indefinitely. And, just so the 1,500 employees at St. Louis South are clear about the meaning of "idle indefinitely," co-president Tom LaSorda said, "We see no intent to rerun this plant. We're idling it and it will likely be fully closed." More »

The new Dodge Challenger is hitting showrooms. The 2009 Dodge Ram launch is scheduled for fall. But it's the sounds of silence after that when it comes to product. What's going on? One influential industry study, the Merrill Lynch "Car Wars" report (yes, that's it's real name), states Chrysler's lack of new product may be a deliberate effort on the part of owners Cerberus Capital Management to thin the herd in advance of a breakup and subsequent sale. In an excerpt that again proves financial analysts are paid by character count, the report says,
"Chrysler's product pipeline severely lags the industry on a number of key metrics, which is an ominous sign for its market share. We believe that this is an active decision by new owners to rationalize the product portfolio in advance of a breakup/sale."
Cerberus, of course, is denying any such plans, stating that, "We have a model that is buy, fix and hold." Uh-huh. Didn't Gordon Gecko say that too? <a href="http://jalopnik.com/397444/merrill-lynch-car-wars-report-claims-cerberus-readying-chrysler-for-chop-shop" title="Click here to read more about Merrill Lynch "Car Wars" Report Claims Cerberus Readying Chrysler For Chop Shop">More »

Former chairman Lee Iacocca gave a closed pep rally to Chrysler employees yesterday in Auburn Hills, once again sharing the stage with a K-car, a minivan...and rumors of Chrysler's imminent bankruptcy. While current CEO Bob Nardelli was praising Iacocca as "Chrysler's most dynamic leader" and "a great American," Chrysler spokesman David Elshoff was telling reporters that rumblings about a forthcoming bankruptcy filing by the automaker were "without merit." Presumably addressing the present state of the industry, Iacocca said, "We'll live through it. Don't panic. Things are going to be OK." To fix the current management problems, Iacocca suggested outfitting Nardelli with wire wheel covers and a vinyl landau roof, then sending him back into the boardroom and hoping everyone would think he was a totally new CEO. More »

As further evidence that Cerberus bit off far more than it expected with its purchase of Chrysler last fall, an internal memo revealed to the Free Press shows that the last few months have been even worse than Chrysler expected. In fact, June numbers are showing an industry-wide disaster looming, with total U.S. vehicle sales down 7 percent in April, 8 percent in May, and on pace to drop 20 percent in June to an annualized rate of only 12.5 million. The memo didn't specifically mention any additional cuts at Chrysler, but CEOs don't generally send e-mails warning of a looming industry crisis just before announcing across-the-board raises. More »

Cerberus Capital Management is not second-guessing its 2007 purchase of Chrysler from Daimler, and the the business is "on track," Chrysler LLC CEO Robert Nardelli said Tuesday at a Wall Street Journal press conference. Nardelli has been facing speculation that Cerberus got in over its head with the Chrysler purchase, particularly in light of U.S. sales that are down 25.4 percent in May and 19.3 percent for the year to-date compared with the same period a year ago. We suspect Cerberus is speculating that Nardelli got in over his head when he took the top spot. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/395920/nardelli-cerberus-not-second+guessing-chrysler-purchase-what-about-ceo-choice" title="Click here to read more about Nardelli: Cerberus Not Second-Guessing Chrysler Purchase. Apparently answering today's QOTD with a "hell yes," our friends in Auburn Hills have tied the super-best automaker from the Land of the Rising Sun in at least one category: Most productive manufacturer, according to this year's Harbour Report. What does that mean? That Chrysler assembles a vehicle in 30.37 hours on average, exactly the same figure reported by Toyota. How'd they do it? Outsourcing! More »

Looks like the rumors that Cerberus bit off more than it can chew were right, at least if the report we're hearing from The Financial Times is correct. The're claiming — via <s>Young Harry Potter</s> Tim Higgins at the Freep:
"Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that took a large bite into the U.S. auto industry by acquiring majority control of Chrysler LLC last year and GMAC LLC the year before, has reportedly sold more than half of its equity in those two firms to about 90 investors."

The good folks over at PickupTruck.com picked up on this interesting press release from Chrysler. It looks as though Chrysler LLC will be building on its relationship with Nissan Motors by building a full-sized trucks for the Japanese-European automaker. Dodge, as you all know, just came out with the new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. Nissan's largest truck is the half ton Titan, which is seriously aging. Should we therefore assume that the truck is going to be a half ton replacement for the Titan? <s>Possibly, but according to PickupTruck.com the Salitllo plant, which is slated for this future production, currently makes the three-quarter and one-ton Dodge Rams. Is Nissan moving up?</s> Details are scarce, but it looks as though Cerberus has found a way to build more cars without having to worry about selling them. Press release below the jump.(UPDATE#1, it looks as though the truck will be a full size light duty replacement for the Nissan Titan. UPDATE#2 We just got off of a conference call with Chrysler's Tom LaSorda regarding the new Chrysler-Nissan deal, which involves a small and fuel-efficient vehicle for Chrysler built by Nissan and likely a Ram-based full-sized light duty replacement for the Nissan Titan in 2011. The small vehicle will be sold in North American and Europe for 2010. In both cases, the styling and design comes from the other company. The Dodge vehicle is apparently already designed and was built in the Japanese Oppama plan, which also makes the Nissan Cube. Is the Chrysler-based car Cube-based?) More »

Beware the Ides of March. By now, Chrysler's Pacifica Design Center in Carlsbad, CA should be a warren of ghost-cubicles, with perhaps a few shreds of jettisoned sketches for futurecars scattered on the industrial carpeting, reduced to janitorial found art. The Pentastar has shut it down and concentrated "blue sky" conceptualizing under the gray skies of Detroit. The studio, which focused on advanced design, had been part of Chrysler's master plan since the early 1980s, according to various published news reports. It was the first California facility opened by a U.S. automaker. And, in a twist of fate, the first to bite the dust. More »

It's no news that the 300's been a hit for Chrysler — and we here at the Jalop obviously are fans of the Dodge Charger SRT8, and the new Dodge Challenger's certainly got itself a purdy mouth. But there's potentially going to be some fuel economy issues inherent with a RWD, Hemi-powered platform given the current desire by Washington to focus toward beating up automakers and away from a more common-sensical Euro approach to increasing fuel economy. So what's the three-headed dog-owned car company going to do? According to the website for the lovers, the dreamers and me the answer is — not a whole lot. More »

Update: We already reported on the Chrysler/Plastech fracas this morning. Now Automotive News is reporting that the two have settled their differences and that Plastech, which has filed for bankruptcy protection, will resume making parts for Chrysler today. Chrysler had made a play for the tools Plastech uses to create sumptuous interiors and other essential elements for Seebrings and Jeeps, but Plastech backed them off. Chrysler idled plants. Things got tense. But now they've all made nice. So, no goons busting into Plastech to cart off their stuff and take it to another, more fiscally stable and probably cheaper supplier. Question is: Is this a one-off dispute between Chrysler, now owned by private-equity firm Cerberus, and a supplier; or is it a harbinger of a new way of doing business in Detroit? More »

Ah, the weird, weird world of supply chains, Motown business practices and secretive private equity maneuverings. Yesterday, Plastech Engineered Products Inc., Chrysler's main supplier of parts, filed for bankruptcy. Chrysler, owned by private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, sued to obtain the toolings necessary to create the parts, but as of today, that action hasn't been resolved. Meanwhile, Chrysler has given more than 10,000 workers a little time off (with more to come today). The Freep has the best take on this story, which has naturally encouraged speculation on the interwebs that Cerberus is attempting a decisive coup de grace, simultaneously whacking a supplier that had become a cash drain and giving itself an excuse for a brief production slowdown to clear some unsold inventory. The actual story might not be quite so dark, but it certainly doesn't look good for Plastech. More »

There's something a little disappointing about a company releasing still images of their new advertisements. It usually means that said company is either unsure about the final cut or that, more likely, they're trying to double dip their media coverage. Normally, we wouldn't give in to such a thing. But Chrysler's "New Day Celebration" images make a nice, homicidal narrative about the new Cerberus take over. It's like There Will Be Blood, with Robert Nardelli as the Daniel Day-Lewis character. More »

So the three-headed dog that runs "The New Chrysler" showed off their new muscle car to their wide world of dealers and a select group of media in Vegas last week. But it wasn't the concept car 2008 Dodge Challenger we've been seeing since it's first reveal at last year's Detroit Auto Show. Instead, they showed off what we're hearing is the production version of the new '08 Dodge Challenger via some secret camera phone shots from either a media person or dealer in attendance at the event. Luckily, as we didn't go, it obviously couldn't have been us who snapped these shots — but fear not, we've got the utmost expectation we'll be getting a call from Chrysler PR blaming us for it. We'll just have to wait for the Chicago Auto Show to see it in person. Full spy report after the jump. More »

Chrysler's Jim Press says his company plans to offer an alternative-fuel powertrain option in every model it sells. Press told the Detroit News diesel, plug-in, fuel-cell and gas-electric hybrids could all be used to backfill Chrysler's lineup with environmentally friendly alternatives. The vice chairman of Chrysler says the company's commitment to green technologies comes from the top — new owner Cerberus Capital Management, whose financial boffins probably have figured to the tenth of a cent what a greener image would sell for. Despite such lofty goals, Chrysler has a long way to go before it'll be known as a green automaker. Of the Big Six, Chrysler is the only company without a hybrid on the market right now. The Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango will be the company's first hybrids when they arrive in 2008, using a two-mode hybrid system mated to the 5.7-liter Hemi. And yes, as we told you first earlier this summer — it's called the "HemiHybrid." The Chrysler media blog's got an interview with the new Vice-Chairman of "The New Chrysler," Jim Press. Much of it's a nice little flufferview of the guy who until being snagged by Cerberus, spent thirty years at Toyota, eventually becoming President of Toyota USA and the only non-Japanese ToMoCo board member. Still, at the end of the interview was a little blurb that stood out as shockingly note-worthy:
"Press has always loved cars. He built his first go-cart at age seven, got his first car when he was 12. At age 13, he started washing cars at his family's dealership in Kansas. But he said he never bought a Toyota or Lexus. The only vehicle he owns is a Yamaha motorcycle. But he'll soon be driving Chrysler vehicles."
Are you kidding us — the guy worked for Toyota for over 30 years and never once bought one of the vehicles he sold? We're stunned. Seriously, stunned. Full verbiage of the post below the jump. More »

We didn't mean to have two posts up this morning on the new retro muscle car from Dodge, but after we reported the somewhat old and obvious news that the Challenger would be coming in an SRT model, we're also hearing some rumblings from the Netherlands. Apparently, and this is coming via a Dutch site with a funny sounding name, Europe not only won't be receiving any SRT versions of the Challenger, they won't be receiving any R/T or any base models. On top of the denial of muscle to Europe, they're also reporting the new owners of "The New Chrysler" won't be making very many of the muscle car for the North American market either. At least that's what we're gathering from the following Babelfish-translated quote: More »
